    Ellen is completely hilarious!

  5. TRUTHFULLY SPEAKING

She doesn’t have an impressive range or a rawness to her voice and the James Brown impersonation is daffy, however, she isn’t shaking her ass and jump roping with blonde hair for 5 minutes. That has to count for something. She should think about a more conventional Rhythm and blues route as her voice sounds more traditional. Vocally, she doesn’t match her outlandish stylized production.

  6. Meat

In the words of Simon Cowell, “that was a complete and utter mess”.

  7. oMG

This girl is being overhyped on these blogs. She sounded a hot ass mess!! And I hope she don’t really think she be dancing like James Brown. She failed. Her voice is not even all that great to be singing songs like this that requires a lot of raw emotion. She just trying to make it sound like it does. Now someone I could see singing a song like that and giving it life with her voice is Chrisette Michele.

  8. JC

“hit single”? CL, what are yall smoking?

  9. That's How They Get You

Truthfully Speaking, I agree with you. I think she’d do better on Broadway, which is where she wanted to be before the whole recording artist thing happened. Seeing her live, she really doesn’t have much presence. And though she said she doesn’t choreograph her performances, it’s really hard to believe. I agree she is a more of a traditional vocalist. Her album and stage show bounces from genre to genre mainly because she’s kind of a Glee Cast type singer who can do multiple genres more than an artist who has her own musical style and I think that’s probably why she takes so much from Frankie Lymon and James Brown, even down to the suit. But I guess people don’t make the correlation because she’s copying old male artists rather than current female artists. It’s a copy nonetheless. I still think she’s very talented, she has a great voice and writes compelling lyrics. But some comparisons I’ve heard (like to Lauryn Hill) are completely overblown. Hit my name to read more in my blog where I reviewed her recent show at Highline Ballroom. I’m still waiting for a cool indie black chick with truly original style and music to hit the scene. And if she can play an instrument and write her own songs, then that might actually be something to report.

  10. Tara

I hate that damm song. I know she’s trying to be different but I aint feeling it.

  11. Jean

These comments are hilarious!! Janelle doesn’t have range??? Listen to the whole album and then judge because she’s a great singer. I haven’t seen her live yet but the reviews are that shes great and the whole show is very high energy.

If you like your music predictable and radio friendly then she’s not for you. If you want to here an artist who isn’t afraid to do her own thing then you’d love her. Everyone has different taste in music but just because you don’t like her doesn’t mean she isn’t talented

  12. Cory

LOVE HER! She’s so dope and refreshing. She can sing her ass off. “Oh Maker” is probably my favorite on the album.

  13. whatde

DAMN THATS WHAT YOU CALL A FLOP!! Even Solange debuted in the top 10! I wasnt expected this! I thought she will do better! But considering the genre of music she does, media, radios and tvs showin those out of the box artists no love, I could understand. SMH. Great album though, I love locked inside song.

She can sing, what r u smoking? She is not the best vocalist but her range is fab! Listen to her album and watch her live! Compared to artists out today, she is good!

  14. BionicBrotha83

I see that when somebody is not putting on 25 different wigs or shaking they ass like a stripper in a club, but if they sound like shit and use autotune, and are commercial puppets then they have talent!??????? What a sad state music is in! We have been programed to believe that lackluster talent is good talent! Janelle is the embodiment of what a performer is! She has a style not seen of this caliber in a very long time, and her sound is very diverse, plus when you hear her lyrics, she has a message to empower people to look within and see the truth! I’m for one am tried of the smoke and mirrors that today’s music has embraced! Yeah I’m going to say it got damn if the was Beyonce, or that supermodel Rhianna it would be all good! She would be epic, she is hot, or whatever! Sorry haters like or not Janelle is going to hit it big, and shut the game all the way down! When I seen Rhianna on Ellen singing, she sounded like str8 shit, I mean it was like a real like nightmare in front of millions of people watching! People don’t want to hear commercial music anymore, people are tried of the same damn thing, same sound, same lame ass, my momma or daddy got me a deal type of singer! Unlike some people she worked hard, underground, sold Cd’s out her car, made her own cd before being signed to a label! Yes bitches I’m going off today! Unlike your beloved God RHIANNA her looks was a factor to her getting signed to a label!!!! In Janelle’s case it was her TALENT!!!!!! Janelle did a damn good job on this performance!!!

Suck it up haters all your hoodrat ass songs and artist are starting to be phased the hell out, real talent is coming back! Time to accept that dumb ass clubs songs are not going to be the norm anymore!

  15. bnewprod

I think Janelle is dope. The Letterman performance was a little better but “Overhyped”? Fam…she’s promoting an album which I think is one of the best this year. And vocally if you are basing this off of one performance and one song…you’re reaching. The girl can sing her ass off

  16. TRUTHFULLY SPEAKING

#15 and #11 About her range, it’s tricky but, in doubting it, I don’t doubt her ability to sing but only her ability to be the sort of singer with the sort of range needed to pull of these more live wire performances and songs. I agree that she has great songs on her album. But all the ones that stood out to me as great were all more mellow tracks. And though the arrangements were colorful, the overall effect was more straight forward. I think she shines best with that sort of production. #9 perhaps articulated that and in a much better way than I have here.

  17. oMG

    @14

She sucks and her album flopped! Ain’t nobody thinking about Beyonce or Rihanna up on here. People are talking about Janelle Monae. You been hyping her since day one and I don’t believe she is as good as people make her out to be. Plus her album is pure illuminati like Beyonce and Rihanna. I guess they never officially let her in the illuminati otherwise her album would be in the top 10. OUCH!

  18. bookie

@ OMG you are the stupidist person on this damn blog and I wish you would go somewhere with all of your negativity. What music do you like if you think Janelle is talentless. Let me guess, Rihanna and T-Pain… Stop coming on her posts with your hateful remarks. You are a lame ass!!!

Janelle is a force to be reckoned with. Her music is pure, rich, and innovative. She is someone people of all backgrounds can look up to. And, she can sing her ass off! Case closed.

Kick rocks OMG with your sorry ass taste in music.

  19. heather

She killed it! I love Janelle so much. She is so refreshing : )

  20. triana

Janelle is so entertaining to watch! Her album is the best of this year by far! God I lover her!!! And it feels so good to see her performing on television. I can’t wait til the tour with Erykah. That shit is gonna be janmmin!!!

    GO JANELLE!!!

I’m not acknowledging these fools on here who think otherwise…

  21. oMG

    @18

I listen to Brandy, Chrisette Michele, Melanie Fiona, Tamia. REAL talent. Janelle Monae is one big gimmick. People can’t see that cuz she playing a role. She is being trained for illuminati. Judah need to be up on this thread to school yall.

  22. SHEDOESITAGAIN!!!

    This was a killer performance!

  23. Sheena

I love this song so much. I listen to it every morning before work.

  24. jessicamorales

this song goes hard and so does this performance. i don’t know what yall are talking about who think something different…

    ???

Janelle is an incredible singer. She can blow!

  25. yesyesyall

can somebody do my hair like that please lol i love it soooooooo

  26. turnipgreens

i like this song. i just heard her album the other day when a co-worker came in and gave me a copy of her cd. that shit is sick as hell!

where did she come from with that voice. i wish her all the best and encourage everyone to go out and get a copy of the archandroid. she is great.

  27. 0beloved

WHY THE HELL EVERYTHING GOTTA BE ILLUMINATI? NOW INNOCENT PEOPLE LIKE THIS GIRL BEING ACCUSED.

    @BionicBrotha83

DON’T TRY AND BRING RIHANNA AND BEYONCE INTO DIS BECAUSE NOBODY IS BUYING HER ALBUM. YALL ALWAYS TRYING TO FIND BLAME ON WHY YOUR FAVES ARE NOT SELLING. SHE IS BRAND NEW AND SHE NOT NO DAMN LADY GAGA SO HER CAREER WILL RISE SLOWLY BUT SURELY.

  28. cindi

wow, i’m shocked that some of you have such a strong distaste for her. she is amazing to me.

i’m rooting for her and always have. this album is remarkable in so many ways and i loved her performance. too bad others are so closed minded to appreciate something different.

  29. bigbrother

i love janelle. she can do no wrong in my eyes…

  30. micka

what are yall talking about. this performance was great! she aint naked and i guess that means shes lame.

whatever i like her and know she will prevail.

  31. RobRydaYaDig

T-t-tip on the tightrope. Dope record from a dope singer, I just don’t know what to say about the first week sales, very dissappointed for an artist of her caliber. Puff and her Atlantic counterparts gotta come up with something. Diddy on get him to the greek, just drop her name when you promote

  32. KA

I CANNOT stand her! She is over hyped beyond belief and she just isn’t delivering the goods to me. Plus I find her corny as hell, she’s like the annoying little girl who is always trying to perform for guests when you go to a family party, and you just want to smack her upside her head and tell her to fuck off.

  33. Monique 1974

I love Janelle Monae! I also caught her performance on the David Letterman show as well. She worked that stage! She has an incredible voice and stage presence. I haven’t purchased the CD yet, (but I will), but I’ve heard snippets of it on YouTube and it sounds really, really good! I know she’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea beacause of the type of music that she does. Plus, she keeps her clothes on! You don’t see her walking around with her boobs hanging out, showing all of her thigh meat or seeing the tip of her ass crack. She keeps it simple that way you can focus on what’s more important: the music! That’s rare in the music industry when it comes to “some” female singers. She has a “throwback” style that calls to mind James Brown, Michael Jackson and Jackie Wilson. People know good music when they hear it. And, if that’s what their thirsting for, then they will be drawn to that. I will support her regardless. She’s a breath of fresh air to me in terms of music right now. So, keep doing what you’re doing Janelle!

  34. BionicBrotha83

@OMG! I can clearly see that you’re an ultimate hater! Unlike some people I don make excuses about why the artist that I liked flopped! In most case it is the quality of the music that makes a cd drop, or due to the fact that being repetitive can also be a cause of a flop! But To be real you are brainwashed like 75 percent of the population to believe that most people in the mainstream are talent today! People like you will always be close minded! Anyways though Janelle has a beautiful range and she knows her limitations so she works with it! This mess about her being in the Illuminati, if that is the situation, it will come to light at well, cuz you can only hide for so long! So to be real I highly doubt that she has and ties with that organization, and if you look in to her concept it comes from a 1927 movie call Metropolis by Lang Fritz! I actually like what she is doing, instated of the typical make me up, turn me into a commercialized whore for a dollar! You say she is a gimmick??? She has been doing this so called gimmick you speak of since 05 or even sooner! I’m not going to waste time on defending her, because her artistry speak for itself!!!

  35. jesse

  40. presley

her album is not a flop. lest we forget she is a new artist and it just came out. people still are buying it and she is making national tv appearances to help promote the album. stop being so nearsighted and pessimistic all the time.

  41. lockedinside

janelle monae is the next big thing. thats all there is to say. this performance is proof of that!

  50. amr

Janelle Monae can do no wrong! She’s incredible! And for those who think she’s copying someone else’s style, who doesn’t? Everybody in the industry does or has done what all the great artists have done in the past. To be great, you have to study the best and when you do that, you are going to see similarities! duh! GO Janelle! Album is awesome! One of the best this year!

  51. anusood

i had never heard of her but saw her open for erykah badu in boston last weekend. she woke me up! the crowd was totally into her, and she had a much more energetic act than ms. badu. but of course i am of the nona hendryx persuasion, so maybe i am biased. would def. see her again and i want to check out more of her music!

i have a video of her performing “tightrope” — will upload to my facebook group with the same name (RockaholicZ.com)
