‘ROUND THE WAY: PRINCE SAYS THE INTERNET IS OVER

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

In a recent interview with the Daily Mirror, superstar Prince spoke briefly about the internet, iTunes and more. The performer has always spoken out about iTunes but it’s interesting to see what he had to say about the net.

The internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.

The internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”

Interesting. Anyway in related news Prince is slated to release his 33rd studio album (20TEN) later this year. Wow!!

Itunes shouldnt sell single song, there is an album and u can actually buy whatever song in the album without buying the whole thing, thats another killer for artists. With digital era, every song has now the chance to get to Billboard top 10 if u name is big enough and u’re relevant, that’s why kesha, gaga, soulja, taio cruz, derulo, britney an some other lame songs out there get straight to top 5 or number one! 10 years ago, u have to have a merit to get far in the charts. Prince also does not allow youtube to post his videos. He agaisnt youtube.

Anyway, Prince is one of the best performers of all time but he is irrevelant now. When u start collecting Lifetime achievement awards and other legendary stuff, u time is up.

Some of ya’ll need to stop acting like Prince is irrelevant and some old man talkin crazy. This man is a legend show some damn respect. Plus he has more talent in hi pinky toe than some folks got in their whole bodies. And yes I AM a Prince stan and proud lol!!!

I feel you Prince. I don’t know about the internet being over but I feel and understand his disdain for the internet. Prince is a true musician. Unlike some of you all’s favorite “so called” artists Prince writes, arranges, produces and sings on his own music. Prince has written for many artists and has a slew of hits on is own!

Back in the day if you wanted a “single” or the whole album you had to go and buy it. The CD or Cassette or whatever even 8 tracks way back when. Now ppl can get all the music they want…for free. Its hurting these artists financially so I feel Prince’s pain. I’m sure the Purple one is far from broke, but its getting to hard for people to actually earn money from ppl buying music.

Most of these young dummies have no clue about reaL MUSIC and no real appraiciation for a true artist. What a bunch of idiots!!

@ chelly

Thank you for speaking with some sense. The internet has also spawned a retarded set of people who assume if they do not hear your music on the radio, your career must be dead. The fast lane ability for a single to chart has also made people assume if you do not break 1 Mil, get a top ten single overnight and then some, you likewise must be a failure. Basic mentality for basic people if you ask me. But what do I know? All of the artists that I love and like are nowhere near the charts or have had a history of doing something that very, very few in today’s industry are capable of — that is arranging melodies, writing out scores of music (yes scores with measures and meters people), and actually creating an original piece of music instead of sampling or applying a prearranged drum beat to their song with a simple application. SMH. This mess is for the birds, and the people who accept it are the biggest reason why the music industry is susceptible to erosion. Image over talent is a recipe for disaster.

The only reason Prince is saying this is because Itunes nor other “modern technology” won’t pay him as much as he wants for his music. But if he insists on turning his back on the internet/itunes etc., he’s gonna lose a whole lotta of money on album sales. Cause folks, not even older people, are gonna pay $18-$20 for one of his cds?! GTFOH

@16 & 17

I understand where you guys are coming from but you have to look at it this way too. After the buy a whole album deal to get one song you had a slew of “artist” come out with BS music. You buy an album and the rest of the cd was crap. I do remember good albums and people using the single to promote the album but the reason those days are done is because of that reason alone. I’m not a fan of all the new single phase either, songs are short and have no meaning. But being a part of the industry shows why these things are happening

Recording artists left more to the imagination and were able to create more intrigue prior to the demands of the internet. We’re seeing an increasing number of magazines and music albums in digital and electronic form because everything now (print interviews, news, music, etc.) is expected before it can even be packaged and sent to retailers. I feel like the world wide web is a critical and useful tool, but it encourages a sense of entitlement and it feeds the tendency for artists to overexpose themselves.

oh please Prince should shut the hell up and stop complaining . He has no one to blame but himself .

He was so full of himself during the 90s after a great run in the 80s and when he suddenly returns very few people today actually give a damn anymore . \

Its amazing to me that someone like Prince who basically gave everyone the finger is now appearing at the BET awards ??? in his Heyday he wouldnt grace Bet Awards or soul train ,NAACP, Lou Rawls telethon or whatever you wanna name with his presence because he was too good for them and us .

But hey when that account gets low you gotta come out of the purple palace only to discover that time has passed you by .

So instead of him trying to introduce himself to a new generation of potential fans he decides to take shots at the media vehicle of there time the same way some in the 70’s was against music videos.

Last year was the 25th anniversary of purple rain but it just falls by the way side because he refuses to use Itunes and youtube and thats where the kids are .

Prince Rogers Nelson either needs to get with the program or get out .

There’s a difference between the internet and technology. The internet is a technological advancement resulting from technology (if that makes sense). It has its perks, and it has its pits. One can’t say the internet is all good though because it isn’t. It has lead to so many crimes (piracy issues, sexual offenses, and the list goes on), but on the other hand its also a good communicative tool which has lead to facebook and other networking outlets. It allows people to do shopping and other activities from the privacy of their own home. In regards to music industry, it has definitely had an drastic affect on it as a whole. Billboard Charts in concerns with singles, were based on airplay and physical CD Sales (only), but now with the internet, which in nothing new to us, anything goes to number one. Real music is still being made, but it’s not receiving any respect. Nowadays, if you like a particular song or album, you can just browse sites (like CL) and simply download it. It’s a no-brainer that it affects the artist/industry in a negative way. It’s a crying shame because no one even goes diamond anymore, and some of the most noted trailblazers of music can’t even go gold. There’s so much to say, but what I’m getting at is Prince is right in some aspects of his argument, but not completely in others. I guess it’s inevitable the internet is here to stay, but blame it on technology.

One more thing, Prince is a legend, and should be respected for his art and his talent. Many of you want to say he’s over, but he’ll never be over. Just listen to some of your favorites today.

I feel you prince on the internet, technology and all the other BS the government is using to continuiously manipulate society and control humans and keep people to continuiously put money back into the governments hands….soon or a later folks are going to start acting like ROBOTS…..and crazy enough start thinkin like them in which I believe is the whole conspiracy behind all this technical bs they keep bringin out….

unfortunately these youngn’s will never know the difference….back in the 90s and 80s folks went over to ppls homes not text them….when something needed to be addressed it was done personally not through twitter….when you wanted a song bad enough u couldnt go on the net and STEAL IT BY DOWNLOADING IT FOR FREE…you had to wait for the single or album and purchase it legitmately…sooo if your 20 and younger ull probably never understand what prince and many others mean by not fkn with or being mislead by the governments plan through technology and the internet. WISE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t really know what he’s talking about but I do not buy cds nor do I buy the songs off of iTunes. I could care less whether or not an artist is making money but that’s another story. I put songs on my iPod without paying for them and if I want to hear a whole album/mixtape I’ll go on the internet and listen to all of the songs and put the ones I like on my iPod.

Like I said before, I really could care less.

Oh and the internet is far from “over”.

@ PRETTY GANGSTA,

I disagree partially .. I’m under 20 and my friends and I all know what it was like to go to a friends house to call them out to play instead of texting people to see who they’re up too and things like that.

I wish things were still that way .. instead people stay inside surfin’ the net and although I’m not ‘anti-internet’ things were just better.

Why does this have to be a war of the ages thing? People should just accept that the internet is both good and bad. Its too much useless information and not enough valuable information. Younger people should respect artists like Prince, but its not to say that their arent any artists that younger people embrace that wont have longevity. I dont understand why everything has to be an argument over nothing. It keeps black people divided over insignifant things.
Not to keep things going but Prince really doesnt need the money, hes established enough and made enough money for many lifetimes. Im not a stan, but I do remember that he used to give music away online for free.

@20.. (ALLEN_J)

I see that point of view, too. But again, sometimes it takes more than one listen to really appreciate a whole album. The internet has fed into the phenomenon of ‘instant gratification’ that western culture has perpetuated for quite some time. Fast food industry is an example of this, online shopping, and now music. The I want it NOW concept is why there are many talent shows which offer whole deals that propel ordinary people into realms of ‘fame’, and that mentality of what it is to be an artist is also a reason as to why the music industry is suffering. It’s no longer art, but a factory of sorts. People do not make music for the artistry in it, to convey anything, they make it to make money and so they cater their music to whatever is ‘in-demand’.

I like the older times because back then you were also able to establish a brand. This is why the older artists who were able to come to fame before this phenomenon still sell a lot despite the climate. People were not so concerned about how many albums you had sold, your place on the charts and then some. I was born in the 80s, and raised in the 90s. I remember when I used to LOVE, and I mean LOVE Aaliyah, Monica, Blackstreet, Jodeci and then some. I did not go around shouting out to people their record sales, where they charted or how many Grammy’s they made or how much money they were worth. The internet has caused people to turn a blind eye to the important things — like talent and if they like the music or not — and instead placed the focus on the personal lives of these artists, what they wear, how their hair is styled, and a myriad of other vain, banal, and useless details that have nothing to do with raw talent. But like I said, that’s just my two cents. LOL I now listen more to indie rock groups personally and anything dated 95 and back LOL.

I think he’s trying to warn us without actually saying it. The government DARPA and other foreign governments have been calling the internet “dead”. Under the guise of “cyber security” they are planning to shut the internet down and bring about the Internet 2. They’ll decide what sites we visit, and it wont be many. It will be heavily censured. It’s basically to take free speech away from us. You don’t need Prince to tell you whats going on, you can research this information while you have the opportunity.

Prince at one point spoke on the chemtrails and predicted 9/11 before it occured. He also exposed how heavily corrupt the industry is and how these “entertainers” are glorified slaves. I’d definitely take heed to what he says.

I don’t care for Prince, but I do understand where he is coming from. I disagree that that the internet is over, because technology has reached it’s peaked and there’s basically nothing else to create for people to view and listen to things, but technology has gotten out of hand. On one hand, download sites like iTunes are great because you can just buy one song from an artist, instead of buying a whole album that sounds like crap. On another hand, iTunes has made so many superficial bubblegum music artists famous! It happens all of the time but it always amazes me when I see a single from a popular artist debut at number 1 or very high on the billboard charts FROM DOWNLOADS ALONE! That’s not fair at all. WTF is the radio for? And then Billboard has a nerve to still have the DOWNLOAD CHARTS! I really don’t get why billboard would even factor all of the downloads into the Billboard Hot 100, when it should just be based on radio airplay. It’s all about trends and focusing on the young generation. Humans are known to be amazed by flashy and “cool” things, especially when they’re young, so that is why it’s so easy to feed them with manufactured bs. I’m only 20, but I remember when artists had to work hard to get to where they are or where.

Ok now I’m a die hard Prince fan and I will not let U people demean his name like this U haters………

!. Prince was a pioneer in the internet game he was the first superstar artist to sell his music exclusively online & was the first artist to emancipate himself from his record label claiming Record labels are going to be distinct in the future. How many Record labels are left now since 1995? Almost none…..

2.Prince is not going to lose money from album sales . Because he is getting payed up front now. He was payed $500.000 up front for his CD Planet Earth in 2007 included in the London newspaper The Mall newspaper for free. Over a millon copies was distributed..

3. NAACP Awards Prince has performed and was honored on there twice. He performed on Soul Train in 1994 & was honored with an achievement award from The Soul Train Awards in 1992. He has not shunned any of those Black Award shows.

4. Prince is not trying to make a comeback he never left. He has released almost an album a year for over 30 years….He will be releasing his new CD 20TEN this Saturday July 10. Distributed through the UK paper with 2.3 million copies called The Daily Mirror and distributed through Warner Bro. in the USA this year…

What other artist finds new ways to get there music out there to fans and the public and getting payed big time upfront. None. Not even Michael Jackson did that may he R.I.P.

I agree with W and HONEY!! The web has its advantages but are they worth the disadvantages? We will definitely see in 20 years or more what it is actually doing to our world!!! Love you Prince, but technology continues to advance and those that refuse to get with it….will be lost!! Is it right what happens to musicians and their music? NO!! But is this any different from when we would tape songs from the radio? As technology advances “businesses” need to learn how to adapt to stay in-tune with the rest of the world. I mean, he doesn’t try to sell LP’s anymore does he? (records) lol We can all get with technology or continue to be left out of the loop as to what our world is doing. Most times you can get details on happenings quicker on the web than watching the news….what does that say about technology???
