Here’s the new video from Kanye West for “Power”, the first single from his upcoming fifth album. In an interview with NY Mag’s Vulture, Marco Brambilla, the video’s creator, calls it a “video portrait”.
“It starts with a very tight shot introducing him that’s kind of a reinvention of a neoclassical painting. It pulls back from the shot, without any cuts, and we reveal the video canvas, populated by all these characters who are depicted in various stages of undress and decadence. The iconography comes from Roman iconography, Renaissance iconography, and it connects to the sexuality of the music as well. As we reveal the setting for it, there’s a feeling of a moment of transition for him. A fall from grace, if you will. It visualizes power, and him as the icon as power, and then at the end of the piece it challenges the power that I set up at the beginning. It’s an elliptical piece of storytelling.
Kanye’s new album is set for release October 12.
I see he’s trying to do a Jay-Z and stir up controversy. He knows more people will watch looking for Illuminati symbols. Its amazing how effective reverse psychology can be.

Great video, love the song. He addresses the reason he went on hiatus but makes it clear that now he’s back. He’s human and it’s difficult to make mistakes in the public eye. I’m glad he’s kept his sense of humor and is still compelling as an artist.

I have to agree with Judah. Have any of you even seen the making of this video or how its concept was created and by who? You can watch the video on VEVO. Kanye West is definitely sending a message out there and intentionally. I’m not some crazy radical just watch the making on VEVO. The creator of this video even say’s “it represents the crashing of a religious concept.” Kanye West is no dummy he knows exactly what he is doing. The question is whether or not its for attention or truly how he feels?

Visually stunning and captivating. They probably made it short so that the viewer will be more likely to watch it again and again. It cuts off abruptly, leaving you waiting for the rest of it. And the content is so intriguing, that the viewer will go back and watch it again. I wanna like the video, but there’s something disturbing in it. Especially the beginning of it where Kanye first appears. One could say that he’s just portraying himself as king to exemplify the concept of power. But if so, why the strong ancient Egyptian symbolism? Why Horus (egyptian sky god) which I believe is also associated with the the all seeing eye? Why these specific symbols. Why angelic beings set to an epicurean type theme? Why is he dressed in all black? This is obviously a supernatural kingdom. I don’t know about this illuminati stuff. Don’t even know if they still exist. But the symbolism in this video is undeniable and purposeful. Just like in the “On to the Next One” video by Jay Z.,

Then the tonal reference was really “How do you visualize a symbol of power that’s almost timeless?” This video is almost like a portrait, a video portrait of Kanye as this symbol of power. The video is actually one continuous shot – it comes out from a close up of Kanye and gradually reveals this decadence and sexuality around him. Once we come to the wide shot, we challenge that position of power.
The narrative within it is a moment of transition. It’s almost like the precarious nature of power, the epic portrait of power. In one sense it’s both the rise and fall of a celebrity in a way and that’s one of the things that interested me about working with Kanye. I wanted to use some of his baggage in terms of the year he’s had coming into this and releasing his first single in a long time. I wanted to use the kind of public perception of him and have fun with that and the concept of him being a celebrity and what he’s gone through recently.”
I am confused for two reasons when reading responses to the video: 1) Why very few people are refusing to comment on what Kanye is saying ABOUT power? 2) Why questions of art are many times foregrounded by charges of satanism, illuminati affiliation, etc…
This is clearly a CRITIQUE of power and not an endorsement of it, right? And since this is a critique of power, how can we understand the symbolism that people are pointing to like Horus, etc…
All I’m reading is fear, fear, and more fear. Art is supposed to provoke, so I guess fear is an emotional response like any other. Yet, fear ALWAYS produces moral panics like “Kanye is the devil,” or “You shouldn’t explore art because it’s mostly of the devil.” When fear is present, there is little room for anything else.
