I know what he was trying to do but it don’t work for me. Using oldies music while using modern filtering on the vocals is just plain wrong. i see a few “crooners” trying to “take it back” but to no avail. R. Kelly is one of the best new wave R&B singers but he lacks the soul of his predecessors. R. Kelly is great in his element but not here, he has more soul than any white singer but not enough to pull off this type of music. It seems like he’s doing all that rolling because he doesn’t have the power to back it up. I know others like the Brandy, Beyonce and Jazmine do it but they have or have the potential to back it up just sangin’. Kelly can sing but he isn’t a sanger. I can hear Carl Thomas or Anthony Hamilton blowing this out of the park or even Wayne Brady, Jazz of Dru Hill or Cee-Lo. There are plenty gospel artist I can name with the soul required but as far a secular it is hard to find in the new generation especially the males.
