MAG COVERS: BRIDGET KELLY COVERS HONEY MAGAZINE

September 20th, 2010

Roc Nation’s singer/songwriter Bridget Kelly covered the September 2010 issue of Honey Magazine. The singer is known for her performance in “Empire State of Mind” at the Jay-Z’s 2009 9/11 Benefit Concert at Madison Square Garden. In the interview she talks about how she started in music, her views on R&B today and her thoughts about the Alicia Keys comparisons:

I think why not? I don’t mind it. It’s not a bad comparison. She’s an incredible person, an incredible singer-songwriter, so to even be put next to her to me was very flattering in the beginning and is still very, very flattering. I don’t mind being compared to her at all. But I think my music speaks a little differently. [ SOURCE ]

    Lets see… Rihanna, Rita Ora, Bridget Kelly, Alexis Jordan, Willow Smith….

    I see a pattern with who Jay-z signs to his label(s).

    Question? Do you have to have light skin to be a female and signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation or any hip hop label for that matter? i’m just sayin…

    I don’t think it actually has anything to do with skin color/complexion. I believe these are the people that he sees ta;ent in and that is who he signs. To even think that is retarded……..Let’s not always make it about color.

    @13… And I agree with you on that…
    I heard this girl sing on that live performance Jay-Z did at Madison Square Garden… and I just remember being blown away with her voice and also her look. I think she is gorgeous and her voice is amazing! Jay-Z is not a stupid man… he knows who to sign and who will be a success in the music business… that is why this man is a mogul in the music biz…

    Let's Talk About It

    She’s cute but she isn’t knocking Alicia Keys off of the “Light Skiined Chick With Bangs” throne anytime soon…

    to the one who said it is not about color with RocNation…trust me yes it is dont you see the pattern. He uses Beyonce Knowles as the one to beat in the game. So hova goes for the closest he can get…n light skinned is a fact here. My dream is to get signed to RocNation n i kno i can sing dance n ima songwriter. but ima Caramel chick n i often wonder will Jay Z sign me or do i have to bleach myself first? Alexis Jordan Rihanna Rita Willow now Bridget Kelly who’s initials are the same as Beyonce Knowles she gone be callin herself BK in a min watch wat i tell ya!

    @22.

    Pick a new dream. Don’t sign to a major label; go indie. Most of these stars are broke as hell, and you have a very minimal chance to make it big with a major. Start small, build your own fanbase like Justin Bieber and Drake did, then allow the major record companies to battle over you. And don’t go to Roc Nation for the name Jay-Z. Jay-Z has very little to do with an artist’s success. He is too busy absorbed in his own fame and ego to really take a backseat and grind for someone else. LA Reid is responsible for Rihanna’s career not Jay-Z.

    @Jae Doe I say to continuosly chase after your dream. I’m pretty sure if you would go to Jay and you are as talented as you say you are, he would sign you regardless of your color. Furthermore, your complexion doesn’t sound too far off from the complexion of the above enetrtainers that you have mentioned. It’s those same thoughts that probably are deterring oter brown & dark skinned sisters from trying to chase their dreams of signing to Roc Nation.

    Not to write a story BUT I hate when people speak of the so called “Truth” when they have no actual facts. Good Luck Doll!!- DREAM. BELIEVE. CONQUER.

    @MEME

    #12 how do you know it’s not about Color, did you talk to Jay Z personally to confirm?

    I’m not understanding black America today, where do you guys live that the light skin/dark skin issues have ceased to exist? And if anything it’s most carried out within the music industry.

    I’m not saying I agree that Jay Z is choosing artists based on their skin color, and if he is I’d say because he’s a smart business man who knows while it’s dead wrong, this is what people will go for the most. He’s promoted Foxy, worked with Jaguar Wright and of course Mary and I’m sure other non-light skin women so I don’t see him doing that like I said unless he’s marketing what people consider the beauty standard.

    But to act as if that sort of prejudice doesn’t exist is what’s retarded, not that people notice and comment on it.

    @Meme..
    lol What’s up with the lowkey jab? Reminds me of less talented rappers taking a jab at the more established ones with the subliminal. Using basic knowledge one can deduce that Jay-Z’s actual involvement in being instrumental in an artist’s career is slim to none. Just look at all the businesses he has a hand in, the fact that he is still recording and touring himself — he has no time to dedicate to new artists. Jay-Z is just a big name that gives artists shine. And that’s more than likely the case with all artists who have vanity labels. Look at Diddy and how he does his artists, and he’s a producer. Janelle Monae had to establish her own production company, and have her own team before she signed to Bad Boy. If you’ll notice, Bridget — who this topic is about — said she didn’t even meet Jay until after two months when she was signed.

    And ^^ I agree. The overwhelming number of light skinned, long haired black females that are mass produced and shoved in our faces is evidence enough. The record labels have a set formula.

    Jade Doe, you sound insecure as hell and if you are this insecure being an unsigned artist, i can only imagine how you would sound if you are signed and have millions judging you. To infer that Roc Nation only signs light skin singer is presumptuous as hell, They manage Wale, Melanie Fiona, etc.

    Some of yall are too damn color struck and simple minded for my taste. Plus who says Jay has to sign dark skin chicks just for the fact of it, it’s not his responsibility to build yall self esteem up.

    I also noticed alot of his FEMALE artist have to be light skinned… he’s gonna miss out on some MAJOR talent with that mentality… he probably wouldn’t have signed a Mary J Blige or Lauryn Hill b/c his choices are shallow…

    this girl can sing but she is not an R&B artist so I’m not intererested…. I do think she and J Cole are the most talented Roc Nation artist though… Anyway. those other 2 girls are wack.

    Some of yall are crazy. Talent is talent. If u talented enough, have ur manager shop u to labels. post your videos, drop your mixtape. What blogs are posting about you? Dont just talk about HER color, talk about YOUR talent and show us ur talent so we can all see. Too much talk and not enough walk. Light skin people dont walk better than white people or darker people. If your “walk” is strong, talent always wins out. If I took that mentality as a model in a business dominated 90% by white models, I would be working at Pizza Hut by now.

    Jay-z is just as responsible for Rihanna’s career as L.A. Reid is as well as other behind the scene. They were BOTH in charge when she got signed and Rihanna herself ALWAYS mentions Jay aswell as LA for being involved in her career. Know ya facts boo and stop trying to discredit the man with your hating ass.
