After dropping her debut single, “Whip My Hair,” Willow Smith announced that she is officially signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label via the Ryan Seacrest radio show.
Her mother actress Jada Pinkett-Smith had this to say:
“After meeting with several record companies, it was clear that JAY-Z, Ty Ty, Jay Brown and the Roc Nation staff was the unquestionable choice. Their passion for Willow combined with their boundless vision and artistic integrity made Roc Nation the perfect home for our little girl.”
Hip-Hop Mogul Jay-Z also spoke about bringing Willow to his RocNation imprint:
We at Roc Nation are excited to work with Willow. She has an energy and enthusiasm about her music that is truly infectious. It’s rare to find an artist with such innate talent and creativity at such a young age. Actually I think that a market for 9 yr olds are possible bc back in the day there were mostly children singing groups (The Boys, Immature, Kris Kross, etc.) I think the lables are definitely trying to open that door again for child performers bc there are so few mainstream child entertainers nowadays and it’s becoming a demand due to the overly explicit lyrics on the radio right now. They want parents to keep that radio on and buy cds for music that their kids can listen to w/o it be too corny or too grown. It’s not taboo at all for a child entertainment market to surface again. Labels stopped doin it for awhile bc labels didn’t feel like investing development dollars into them but now the labels are returning to that business model. Plus, the kids are rich already so if it flop then the labels won’t be hit with too much backlash compared to a kid who is really depending on that money AND their rich parents can help develop them thru their own star power resources without having to dig into the labels’ pocket too much.
Very inapropriate for 9 year old female to be acting like this. She should be focused on school! All she’s serving is recycled Rihanna and I’m not buying it. The song is, however, decent, but not for a 9 year old. Especially not good enough for her to be signed. It is a fact that child stars often grow up to be disfunctional. It’s a cute one time thing, but I am not on the bandwagon for her to make a career out of it. I sure am not.
She DOES LOOK LIKE RIHANNA IN “RUDE BOY!” WTF, that picture is quite disturbing. Why is she trying to pose sexy? I definitely don’t agree with this little girl being in the music business and I think it’s SICK OF Y’ALL TO THINK SHE SHOULD “LIVE OUT HER DREAM!” The music business is for adults, it’s just that for years, children have tried to be apart of it. She hasn’t even hit puberty yet. I don’t understand why Will and Jada would even want their children to be exposed to a wild business such as the music and entertainment business.
I’m against minors even 17 year olds being allowed to be signed and release an album because people always have to watch how they market them. And for those who think it’s crazy for people to say negative things about this little girl, she and her parents set her up for this! Don’t feel sorry for her just because she’s 9, her a** shouldn’t be exposed like this. What ever happened to GETTING AN EDUCATION IN SCHOOL AND WANTING TO GET A COLLEGE DEGREE AND BE SOMETHING OTHER THAN FAMOUS? When she’s in her teens ,I’m sure she’s going to strip down just like the rest of these hoish singers.
