AWARENESS: SESAME STREET TEACHES BLACK GIRLS TO LOVE THEIR HAIR

Sesame Street recently aired a new song and video on PBS entitled “I Love My Hair.” The music video teaches pre-schoolers and kindergartners (particularly black girls), about the importance and value of loving their natural hair. Check out this cute and positive video.

And @58 you’re an idiot.. don’t generalize natural people and we won’t generalize permed people lmao; you clown ass hypocrite. “Don’t judge permed people! But here I go on a paragraph long rant judging natural people. Cause that makes sense!” lol okay.
    cool life.
And PLENTY of people tell white folks not to get fake lips etc.
None of my white guy friends like Megan Fox because of hers.. that’s saying something. Be seated.

It’s going to take a lot more than a Sesame Street character to give little girls self-esteem. The Fathers are a huge part of shaping a girl’s confidence. The Mothers can only do so much.

Also, it doesn’t help that everywhere u turn-u see videos, tv shows and movies of women w/ weaves, extensions or permed hair. I can’t think of very many famous women who wear their hair natural. If you look at rap videos-you’d not only think black women don’t wear their hair naturally-but that Black men don’t want Black women @ all (ie-Puffy Ciroc ads and Yung Berg’s comments).

I am glad to see that their are a growing number of braiding salons and women wearing their natural hairstyles in my community. I’ve been creamy crack free for 7 yrs. and never looked back!

First off, I think it’s interesting that the ad on this page is for Janelle Beauty, “Straight Smooth Hair Without Chemicals.” Irony. Second of all, I love this vid and posted it to my facebook yesterday. It is rough for young girls, as someone who has never had a perm I can understand the journey. However, we’re on here saying the video isn’t enough and the community has to be a part in this transformation and I completely agree. But this video isn’t hurting the cause and in correlation with other things, if nothing more, it can help raise consciousness. Third, for people with relaxed hair taking offense simply because a beautiful brown skinned puppet is embracing natural hair is completely ridiculous. Most of the people claiming that they love the hair yet chemically straighten it are being inherently contradictory. First off how can you love something you never see in the natural state? Or using weave so it’s not actually your hair you love. If I see another Black hair care magazine cover without a lick of black hair on the cover I’m going to scream. I don’t judge but I do think saying you love your hair and then chemically alter it is like saying you love your skin tone yet lighten it everyday. I not pointing fingers and pitting natural hair against relaxed hair, but with the tools and techniques we have today I adamantly believe no one NEEDS a relaxer, we are simply conditioned to think it’s our only option by companies wanting your business. Don’t get me wrong, I think all Black is beautiful, I just wish my fellow sisters would stop letting people tell them what they need and find out for themselves.

    Peace

Everybody has good hair, its just the way how you take care of it….But i hate when people think that its only black girls who wear weave, at my school I see a lot of Spanish and white girls wearing weave.

Great job Sesame Street! The video made me shed a tear.

I love this video. I have never had a perm. As a child I had thick nappy hair and my mother loved it so she said she never is going to perm my hair. Because she loved it and spoke so highly of it I grew to love it thats why I havent put a perm in it. Why a perm when i can flat iron it? I can wear it straight, afro, braids, weave all types of ways. I dont knock woman who do perm their hair it doesnt make them less black but i knock woman who say nappy hair isnt good hair. do you know that our hair is the way it is because it can hold moisture. so in africa our hair mainted watere much longer so that it could keep us cool. what is not to love!

i took this comment from another site because i totally agree!

“I’ma go ahead and admit what I think a lot of women with natural hair secretly feel but won’t say out loud. Yes, I give relaxed/weave addicts the side eye. Yes I look at them and think, God it’s sad that they still, in 2010, subscribe to the slave/colonial mentality of a European beauty ideal. I know women who wear their hair straight sometimes just for kicks. Cool. It’s just hair, *in those situations*. I know many more women for whom straight hair is a crutch because they (unconsciously or not) believe that straight hair is prettier/ more professional/ more acceptable / more manageable (b*tch you can’t go out in the rain! how is that manageable?) than kinky hair. And I think it’s a d*mn shame. “It’s just hair,” right? But the people who say that have a problem with women bleaching their skin. What is the difference? Ain’t no difference. For real. If you haven’t seen your real hair since third grade, you’ve got issues. Handle that. Sure, when I interact with weave/relaxer addicts in person, I play that supportive “oh you can do it too” “oh yeah it’s so liberating, feels great” supportive happy sista role but in my head I’m like, “wow, you really hate yourself. and you probably don’t even know it.” I can’t take a woman seriously who honestly believes that the natural hair that grows out of her head isn’t beautiful. I can’t. And I’m not sorry I feel like that. Call me a nazi natural or whatever but the slave mentality is real, it’s pervasive, and it is contributing to the sad state of Black people all over the world. Relaxer/weave addiction is a symptom of a much deeper issue that needs to be addressed if we are going to escape the legacy of slavery and colonialism.”

When are they going to premiere the Sesame Street video “I LOVE MY LACEFRONT”? I can hear it now, “Maybe natural looks good on you; but I love my wig and glue……” LMAO.

  9. rian

EH; Wearing weave doesn’t always have (anything in my case) to do with wanting to be or being European.. In reference to 68. Ok’s comment.
I’m natural and wear sew-ins to
    A. Most importantly, protect my hair and allow it to grow..
    B. If anything, I’m trying to resemble natural BLACK / North African girls who already do have long hair, not european people..
I’m natural and do sometimes negatively stereotype people who aren’t but that “slave mentality” thing isn’t true at ALL.. that’s ridiculous.

To say that wanting to have long straight hair (weaves) is wanting to be white, is 10x more ignorant (and almost racist) than perming the hair in the first place.

It’s the same as saying that all european have long straight hair (THEY DON’T) and black people CAN’T grow long straight hair (THEY CAN), idiot. That isn’t even almost true. ALL of my full white friends have to wake up and straighten their CURLY natural hair to get it straight too just like natural black women can and do..

And, I don’t think it’s that deep. I just think : black people have NO CLUE what the hell to do with their hair (because of slavery, they never had time to learn about it) and wanna be lazy and just “do what we’ve always done” and PERM IT; Not actually take time to experiment and learn about it because hair care for natural hair is not common knowledge and is subjective and takes experimenting, work and money. A perm is like $6 and can last for more than a month; no maintenance required; sounds like a deal to me, especially compared to natural hair maintenance; if you’re lazy. That’s how I think they think of it.

And wearing weave and getting perms is in no way even CLOSE to bleaching your skin.. are you kidding me?)

    and lmfaoooo @69.

that nappy sh*t on that muppets head smdh lol

    Ooooohhh this is wonderful!!!

  14. TCD

I thought it was cute and it was nice to see that representation on Sesame Street. However, I do agree with other posters who said just because a woman wears her hair straightened that it’s self hate. Some people just like different styles, whether a woman wears her hair straight or natural, it’s her preference and you have to know what works for you.

I was also wondering if that was Willow Smith singing, it sounds just like her.

  15. Ms. Kells

Cute! Cute! Cute! I hope that parents show their Black children this video, both boys and girls.

  16. Tali

im sorry but this video is just sad! not all black people have nappy hair. they ignorant if they think all black people have one colour and texture for hair. This is most racist message to kids ive seen since princess and the frog (you know the only princess in history of disney that had to work her ass off and got the only broke prince) smdh im doing some serious screening on what my kids watch.

  17. TARA (Rebel to the Madness...)

This is wonderful!!! I am so proud to see this video. It makes me teary eyed (and usually I am not teary eyed). The brown skin muppet represents individuals who enjoy their natural hair even when it seems no one else can really understand (or has experience). Be proud of who you are!! *I have natural hair since 2003. And I know singer India Arie would be proud of this video as well; her positivity has helped me especially with loving who I am.

  18. Sarah Vaughan

i love this. sesame street of all places :v )

  19. Sarah Vaughan

i wonder if they have an “i love my nose” song…(i just couldn’t resist).

  20. Smonty1227

Judah, this can help grown women too. It’s been making the rounds. I saw this on the Keep it Simple Sista hair care forum and put it up on my facebook page. I am natural and have been for 4 years…but even if I wasn’t I totally love it!

  21. Smonty1227

Oh and natural is everything from kinky to curly because it’s all a curl pattern some just tight then others. I love my hair blow straight and I love my natural curls an waves!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE MY HAIR!

  22. rashad

    I dont like this video..
    I picture it like this.
White guy @ Sesame street who knows no real black people: Black people need help! They cant think for themselves and only believe whats on TV. So lets make a show about hair. Tell them to love their hair and they will love thier hair…

And here we go. We have this shitty video, with the ugliest doll representing black people ever. even the KKK would be impressed by this doll’s uglyness and its insult towards black people.

And while im at, where the hell is the video telling white girls to love their flat asses and stop buying booty pop ?? Oh thats right, they are white and are “ok” and dont need help. Uh huh i see, us black people are hopeless in the eyes of the White man. Fuck em.

  23. rashad

This is why we have a black panther resurgance, take over our hoods again and get the white Jews out of our communities. Black pride = black power. And THAT is what we need. Pride in being black, and pride in MAKING our neighborhoods 100% black so that we can remain as a race in this nation [White people want us to mix which = death to black america].

  24. Paul

I love it. I think it’s funny peoplee try to compare black issues and white issues together. i mean do you see almost every white person getting breast jobs, tans, and butt implants.Everywhere I look, I see a black womans hair relaxed or some type of chemical altercation. I don’t knock off wanting to look different and having a new style but damn. Not every black woman wants that. My sistahs, you hate your hair. I mean why not grow it natural and flat iron it like that. There are some black people that have straight and wavy hair naturally but the majority of us don’t.Then there are people that say they can’t go natural. That makes no sense, what did our ancestors do before all of these chemicals? They were natural. It’s just sad to know everywhere you turn, you wonder if a black woman’s hair is real or fake. Go natural and you want straight flat iron. If you going to relax it, don’t let it be about self hate or fitting into society.
