VIDEO: WILLOW SMITH INTERVIEW W/ MTV NEWS

Willow Smith sat down with MTV News on Tuesday (October 19) and shared a bit about her experience thus far as a singer. She talked about the first time she hung out with Jay-Z, her musical inspirations, and showed us the right way to whip your hair. The 9-year old also discussed commitment, procrastination and what it really means to whip your hair:

On what “Whip My Hair” means:
“Don’t be afraid to be yourself. And don’t let anybody tell you that that’s wrong because the best thing is you.”

One thing in her closet that she can’t live without:
“I can’t live without my shoes. There’s one pair I can’t live without. They’re high-tops and they have checkers on the bottom and they’re like yellow and pink and white and they’re so tight.”

On how she felt the day of the video shoot:
“It was a long day most of the time. It was hard sometimes. But if you have a commitment to that, you have to stick with it. It’s not because I have to, it’s because I want it. Most people if they don’t want it, they’ll just be like, ‘Oh, well I can do that tomorrow. Is that what they call procrastinating?”

Gotta love Willow.

  3. LADYINDASTREETS

WHY DID I JUST REALIZE WILLOW IS FOR WILL AND JADEN IS FOR JADA

  4. Twista

“It felt like all the hard work paid off” – What hard work?! She’s NINE!!!

You know the interviewer is in serious FML mode having to conduct a professional interview with this infant.

  5. LADYINDASTREETS

IT ALMOST BOTHERED ME THAT SHE COULDN’T KEEP STILL, BUT THEN I REMEMBERED SHE’S ONLY 9!!!

  6. Lis

She may have her daddy’s looks, but her personality is all JADA! lol

  7. tawana

Thats where she get her style from .. She love LADY GAGA….

  8. Bella Anais

@Twista That’s exactly what I was thinking LOL … Surely no one in the office wanted to interview the 9 year old!

  9. JAZZO

I love her!!! I like that she’s getting to do what she loves. But I still think she’s too young. Even thirteen would have been a bit better.

  10. BABES

Willow GO TO SCHOOL!!! im sorri but wot the hell, nine year olds are getting educated not whipping their hair back and forth, goshhh!

  11. BABES

Willow GO TO SCHOOL!!! im sorri but wot the hell, nine year olds are getting educated not whipping their hair back and forth, goshhh!

  12. JAZZY

I dont think I Knew A LOT of those words that she was saying when I was 9!!! YOU GO WILLOW! I just Really Hope she or her Parents dont take her Childhood for Granted…

  13. guil

It looks like there is a grown woman inside of a child’s body, having the emotions and manners of a child. She is very intelligent and cute child.

  14. guil

As far as Im concerned I believe you are a child only for a short period of time, then you are an adult for the rest of your life so childhood is very precious, I think her parents can do a great job balancing her career and her childhood (including education). She is intelligent. Be careful though. I see a lot of pressure for her though during that long road she is about to overcome. Love her.

  15. eyegasmic

Michael Jack. Beyonce, Stevie, Usher, etc all started singing at under 10 years old
so miss me with all that ‘go to school’ .She has home schooling from her parents
cuz we all know public school is whack and private school leaves you sheltered.
and she acts well to be Nine to have a conversation with an adult.
all the child actors, models, artist, all that is the same category. if we could do
what she does at 9 we all would too so fallback. let her do her thang she has good parents

  16. Nikita W.

    Thank you Eyegasmic! Aww…Love Willow!

  17. Kyla

Telling her to go to school isn’t going to make her go to school so why do people ALWAYS bring it up? Like Willow is actually going to go to an actual school .. she has a tutor.

    She’s just too cute.

  18. asunkee

I’ve never seen a 9 y.o. so confident and eloquent. GO DEH GYAL !

  19. ATLANTAGEORGIA

Somebody needs to whip some damn sense into this poor child! She looks hideous! What a mess of her parents to make such a foolish mockery of her for coins!

  20. MINDFUL

@ #10 shut your ass up! Looks like YOU should be the one concerned with school by the judge of your spelling. I’m quite sure WIll and Jada have her schooling situation under control!

Anyways moving right along good interview from a 9 year old besides her not keeping still, typical kid lol

  21. TakeALook@Yourself

    @10 Babes,
So you’re “sorri”, and you want to know “wot” the hell, and why “SHE” isn’t in school.

It’s so funny how we assume that she is not getting her education, just because she is able to embark upon a music career. Her parents obviously have her in some type of classes because she definitely speaks a lot better than other 9 yr olds I’ve encountered. Truth be told, she speaks a lot better than some adults I’ve encountered.

This is total speculation but I would venture to say that some of the people making comments could probably encourage their kids a little more in education, and cut back on the football, basketball and baseball practices.

  22. missnikkit

too cute, and already an individual and not a mockery of societal views. YOU go to school, it’s never too late to go back. Jada made it blatantly clear that she takes her role as “mother” very serious, and her children do not just do what they want to do, they do what the love to do. She says she’s big on not ‘spoiling’ her kids but she does support their dreams. If you are a parent and you are not supporting your child’s dream at what ever age they want, i.e, playing basketball at 5, hockey at 7, ballet at 3, guitar at 11…my son is 4 and he wants to and cannot stop talking about playing baseball…you are doing a disservice to your child and to the world for not preparing them to be themselves……Khalil Gibran said it best….”your children do not belong to you”, essentially they belong to themselves. Let them grow and you support, nurture, and guide them along the way.

  23. WHY

GREAT JOB WILL AND JADA ON RAISING TWO BEAUTIFUL TALENTED KIDS, AND I LOVE THE SUPPORT YOU GIVE THEM WHEN IT WAS JADEAN TIME TO SHINE YOU GUYS WENT EVERYWHERE WITH HIM AND NO THATS ITS WILLOW TIE TO SHINE YOURE GIVING HER THE SAME SUPPORT.

    JOB WELL DONE!!!!!

  24. liyah

kids are just too grown now.

The entertainment business destroys their childhood.

but i will admit, that the last sentence had me smiling. i thought it was cute.

  25. Neece

THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR WILLOW AND BLESSINGS TO HER!
PEOPLE ARE PISSY BECAUSE WHEN SHE TALKS, YOU SEE THAT SHE IS
JUST A NORMAL BLACK GIRL, WHO HAPPENS TO HAVE RICH PARENTS…
SHE’LL LEARN ALL OF THE SCHOOL STUFF LATER…. NOT EVERYBODY WANTS THEIR KIDS TO SPEAK 7 LANGUAGES, AND BE A SCHOLAR! HER
PARENTS SEEM TO BE MORE FOUCSED ON HER BEING A FASHION ICON
THAN A THE SMARTEST CHILD… that’s usually for yt folks anyway.. black
people dont REALLY care about thier kids.. lol- Just b-ciz Donlad Trump’s 5 yrs
old knows 3 diffrent languagues.. he was really proud to show that on TV.. jada just
wants the world to see her kids have style.

  26. It Is Wat It Is

Why is there so many people on here worrying about this child going to school!!!!! From the sound & looks of things she is very intellegant & well-mannered!!!! Im pretty sure she is getting the best home schooling $ can buy, so worry bout your on kids education & let her parents worry about hers!!!!!! DUECES!!!!!

  27. laylahhh

    I KEEP 4GETTING THAT SHE IS 9!!

  28. circa-1984

I think Willow has been coached on her responses. Ain’t no way a 9 year old girl is coming up w/ these responses on her own..smh…

  29. THE QUEEN HAS ENTERED

MAYBE IT’S JUST ME BUT THIS VIDEO DISTURBED ME. I DON’T LIKE KIDS ACTING LIKE ADULTS ITS JUST NOT RIGHT. HER PARENTS KNOW RIHANNA WAS THIS CHILD INSPIRATION FOR STYLE, AND THAT BOTHERS ME. I HOPE SHE LEARNS ARE MULTIPLICATION FIRST BEFORE SHE LEARNS DESIGNER LABELS. IDK ABOUT CHILD STARS THEY ALL HAD WEIRD THINGS DONE TO THEM. MJ, ETC ETC ETC BEYONCE LITTLE SECRETS, MILEY CYRUS LITTLE SECRETS. I WILL PRAY FOR HER SHE IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL LIL GIRL.

  30. THE QUEEN HAS ENTERED

@28 CIRC I WAS THINKING THAT TOO. SHE ACTS LIKE WILL SMITH IN HIS INTERVIEWS. A CHILD THAT’S 9 YEARS OLD AND DONT KNOW MULTIPLICATION CAN’T PRONOUNCE WORDS LIKE PROCRASTINATE I PRAY FOR THE YOUTH!!!!

  31. Leon

Is it just me or do both Will Smith’s kids come across as ”coached”.

Dont get me wrong, they are talented but just listening to her makes me think that she was almost put in a room and engineered on how to respond in interviews. She is a pretty little girl but she doesnt act like a 9 year old. She is more mature than some artists who are in the mid 20′s.

I bet she knows all the designer brands and how much they cost.

Daym, will and jada may regret this.

  32. xyz

People are blowing her way out of proportion. Who cares if she doesn’t go to school. She will still have more money than all of y’all on here put together. She can be dumb the rest of her life and all the money her daddy makes will pay all of her bills for a lifetime. Ponder on that one.

And how the hell is her inspiration Lady Gaga? She just came out two years ago and basically blew up last year. I can’t even imagine Jada and Will letting her watch Lady Gaga videos…then again never mind.

  33. xyz

I guess they don’t like the Rihanna comparisons so they told her to say Beyonce and Lady Gaga as her inspirations.

Beyonce cool, but Lady Gaga? I can’t even imagine them letting her see Lady Gaga videos because she either humping somebody or killing them in the end but I digress.

  34. getgot

    Really like chicks personality.

  35. Leon

    @xyz

That’s not the point, comments like that are so lame and child-like

”she will have money than you” blah blah blah

Obviously, isnt rocket science that her dad is a multi millionaire and many of us wont become that.

  36. NOTE:

I’m so glad she didn’t say Rihanna. Willow is too cool. If she wasn’t Will and Jada’s daughter she’d still be a star…her type of personality is magnetic, I luv it, great job!.

  37. Myshel

Jada, Will, Grandparents….and whomever else involved taking care of her JOB WELL DONE!!! She is a great child.Smart and speaks very well.

  38. Creole

I think this is a well rounded, respectful, intelligent and confident KID!!!

1.She told her parents she wanted to do this so that dispels any theories that her parents are forcing her.

    2. She made a COMMITMENT to this project and said it was hard . that’s because these video shoots can be 10 hours long and she may have to do the same dance sequence multiple times so it is physically taxing. These things are not done in one take. Besides how many 9 year olds can use the word commitment correctly in a sentence and live up to the definition?

    3. She is well rounded and even though her parents are wealthy she appears to be very humble, and is happiest in the company of her friends and family.

I don’t know about anyone else but when my kids came to me and wanted to try different things in school I supported their dreams. Whether it was sports, musical instrurments, etc. What makes anyone think Will and Jada don’t want to support their childern’s dreams and GOD given talent ? They are just able to do it on a larger, grander scale. I am proud of them as a Black family t.

  39. Justin

She’s a sweet girl. I like her. She’s smart but not pretentious, she’s just herself. She’s not trying to be “grown”.

  40. Denim

Did she really say that she is influenced by Billy Idol ?

  41. Rick

@ babes bitch you need to go back to school you can’t fucking spell what the fuck is “sorri” and “wot”

  42. ashley

Lol, she kinds look like Oscar…the fish character Will played in Shark Tale!!!

  43. Luvbw

ver intelligent good Job Will and Jada. Haters fall back.

  44. fififj123

Thank You for clearing that up for the haters Willow….Not because you have to but because you want to. I mean why is it that parents are so called pimping their kids as some have said. She is constantly around singing and acting from both parents and brother and whoever they associate with in that arena so why wouldnt she say she wants to sing or act too. Glad she explained her style as punk rock and classroom. Just as long as its not provocative, its cool. Team Willow.

  45. Lady H-Town

WILLOW SMITH IS IN THE BUILDING! she’s 9 enough said, she has personality she’s not an introvert and scared of the world. Her parents are doing a beautiful job raising their children. What’s funny is i bet half of ya’ll got kids that sit in the front of the t.v. and when they do a filthy dunk you facebook’n about it. She’s doing something she likes and that’s what matters. If this is her only hit she can say my parents allowed me to express myself in a positive way to my peers. This is called effective parenting, taking interest in what your kid(s) like and you just might find that they’re quite talented. My 11 yr old is a great writer very expressive in short stories & poems, loves fashion and designing clothes, so as her mother I encourage her to tap into it and see what she gets out of it. Instead of people putting out negativity encourage our kids..that’s what’s wrong with them now. We’re so busy telling them what they’re doing wrong, how about telling them what they’re doing right!

  46. lee

Yes she is very mature for her age, but does anyone REALLY want to deal with an immature 9 year old?! no sorry. to be in Hollywood, you have to be mature so you can get the respect you deserve and shes getting it very young. And yea, she is 9. How old was Raven when she was on the Cosby Show?! MUCH younger. This is just a huge thing because shes getting into music as a child musician when for YEARS there have been child actors and actresses. As long as she stays confident and out of trouble, i’m all for Willow.

  47. LMAO

    #3 ladyindastreets

GIRL!!! Why was I lying in bed thinking the same thing and was stunned at the realization (rocket science, I know)….. AT 5:30 A.M. this morning!!! LMAO. It just ran across my mind and ran out. No crystal balls involved, but I’m dumbfounded that the day I was thinking it someone actually said it and I was going to post it today!!!

    Okay, back to reality…… LMAO

  48. emily

It’s no surprise she’s inspired by BEYONCE and not rihanna
I said if from day 1 that there were no similarities between willow and rihanna…she’s too talented to be inspired by a waste of space

  49. Fair

So there isn’t anyone on here who thinks that she shouldn’t be looking up to her inspirations Lady Gaga and Rihanna? It’s disgusting how these women are walking around naked, having sexual encounters in their videos, shaking their a**es, and being all demonic and controversial and don’t care that there are children who watch this and look up to them. I swear, you guys who make fun of blacks for “bringing down” a 9 year old are actually the stupid blacks who think this little girl is going to turn out well. I don’t like how grown she dresses and thinks.

What makes you think she’s not going to end up like these trashy females and sell her a**? Being a superstar is vastly overrated. Stop bringing up Michael and Stevie in this because just because they were child stars doesn’t mean it was right. And how dare y’all say finally kids have a child star to look up to? I’m only a young adult with no kids and I don’t think it’s right to have your child look up to these child stars. Doesn’t anyone remember how Miley Cyrus had her father an mother “guiding” her when she was 13 and becoming a superstar… now look at her. So many of her 5-15 year old fans were defending her raunchy behavior on the internet! Plus, what do y’all mean not everyone wants a scholar who knows multiple languages? WTF??? Everyone should want their child to be extremely intelligent and succeed in school!

  50. Meredith

    she is very impressive!

  51. WTF

LOL the media is already reporting that Willow is bigger than Riyawna lol
