It’s difficult to say how I feel about this. It important not to apply moral standards of a western society to a non-western society, especially one that is Islamic (in the northern areas primarily). That is the same mindset that europeans had when they went to non-european societies and deemed nonwhite people uncivilized, backwards, barbaric and therefore inferior. Just because non-white, non-western societies were different from what europeans were used to.
I don’t want to fall into that same mindset of “western society is better and what you’re doing is non-western (wrong) therefore you are fucked up”. What I want to know is why is it wrong for her to wear pants underneath her garments? What do they usually wear underneath? And was it necessary to beat her so severely for it? Ok, she committed a crime but the punishment just seems excessive. Take her to jail or something if it’s a crime. What if they had beaten her so badly that she died over something that they could have punished adequately in a less-harsher manner? Even when looking at another culture and trying to be objective, the punishment provokes me to a rage.

Does the law say that people should be flogged? Yes. You black women don’t believe in discipline, which is why you’re mocked worldwide as the biggest whores on the planet earth. If a female that was a relation of mine went against the Most High, what could I do to avert her judgment other than suffer the same fate if she chooses not to repent. I think it’s funny how some people are defending this and claiming that it’s (African) culture, so it’s okay. Please stop the ignorance about “African culture”. Africa is made up of over 55 countries with thousands of different ethnic groups and their different cultures, so to even lay claim to “an African culture” is highly faulty reasoning. Yes, culture is relative and all cultures won’t always see eye to eye but that does not mean we must blindly accept every wrong behavior and claim that “because it’s someone else’s culture, it’s okay”. There are still fundamental truths we must examine and see if they stand up to providing a human being with basic human rights. Additionally, even in this Sudanese community, I am sure not everyone living there agrees with this kinds of laws and punishment. This woman is clearly one of them. Now you are claiming that westerners are imposing their culture on others. But if this woman does not agree with this cultural practice, then these men who are beating on her are also imposing their view on her. If you are so enlightened then open your eyes all the way, don’t be so selective. Point your fingers at the men who have chosen to force down so called “cultural practices” on a woman who does not agree with it. VERY good points and I completely agree. Using “cultural differences” as an excuse to defend blatant inhumane treatment is a copout. Plain and simple. That was my point too–regardless of the “reasons,” it’s wrong. The “reasons/justifications” are completely beyond the point. Basic human rights should be granted to all individuals – including the right for an adult not to be beaten and publicly humiliated.
Im going to try and be fragile here but I think the problem here is that people are bashing each others “cultures” by over generalizing. The word we are missing here is Ethnocentrism: “the belief in the inherent superiority of one’s own ethnic group or culture.”

This is saddening. How humiliating this woman must feel. In another situation when another woman wore trousers under her dress, she got fined. First and foremost, it doesn’t matter what the lady or rather the victim did because beating a woman like a fucking dog in the middle of the street is wrong no matter which way you look at it. There is a right and wrong way to do things, if you have a sense of civility. No matter what she did this could have been handled in a manner that didn’t besmirch her honor or that of her family’s. If the culture that one belongs too chooses to use violence as a means of maintaining morals, then you can’t consider the flock to be truly upstanding. In reality the majority are nothing more than slaves that follow the rules because they are fearful and not because they are virtuous. Countries like this in Africa are basically no better than America, because at the end of the day, society can’t make a moralistic person. That is an individual decision between that person and God. Also, religion as whole, has done more harm than good since the beginning of time. Many from the religious community have relationships with ancient books and rituals, but not with God and that truly is the problem. Lastly, let me add that no one would care that the devil himself or herself is walking amongst them if they master their role and play the part of upright citizen well. The contents of one’s heart never really seem to be of significance, and that is the one thing every culture shares.
Please do not forget where you originally come from. No one said Africa does not have its faults but please remember you live in a country that has created you, your truth, your belief system and everything you know. A country that helped to destroy Africa and continues to do so. OUR “Black” history is printed by a white man. You were brought to this America you praise so much by a white man. You were being lynched by a white man even after he set you free in this country. You still cant even cross state lines without getting shot (i.e Katrina) in your wonderful America. I am from Africa and I can tell you that if you lived in Africa, you would have a different opinion. The treatment most ordinary people get in Africa is Barbaric. Not only that, Islam as practised by many Africans especially the poor ones is vicious, unmerciful, unforgiving and something you would not defend if you saw it first hand. Many people use Islam as a tool for wickedness and cruelty. I am not saying this is not done with other religions, but in the political and socially oppressive societies in Africa, such laws as flogging, stoning and amputating serves as a power play for some and oppression for others.
Further more those men that are doing the beating would not allow themselves to undergo such punishment under any circumstances. You can see that they are inflicting punishment out of joy rather than out of any kind of righteousness.
