Each third Monday in January, the nation celebrates the birth of noted civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This year, the day also marks the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Day of Service, which calls for volunteers across the country to donate their time and energy to make a difference and create what Dr. King called “the Beloved Community”.
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are leading the charge by participating in a service project in Washington, D.C.
“Martin Luther King, Jr. lived his life for others, dedicating his work to ensuring equal opportunity, freedom, and justice for all,” the President said. “I encourage every American to observe this holiday in honor of Dr. King’s selfless legacy by volunteering in their own communities and by dedicating time each day to bettering the lives of those around us.”
While some may view it as a day off, make it a day on and find an opportunity in your area to do something extraordinary for your community. If you need a bit of encouragement, read/listen to this inspirational message from Dr. King, which he delivered at New Covenant Baptist Church in Chicago on April 9, 1967, “The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life”.
