Over the weekend and up until yesterday, radio personality/comedian and author Steve Harvey has been under a bit of fire by his fans and listeners. His former wife Mary Shackelford released a series of videos on Youtube, in an effort to tell her side of the story after learning that Harvey has filed a lawsuit against her, claiming that she was the reason that Oprah decided not to give him his own television show.
Now seven years following their messy divorce and after learning about the actions of his ex-wife, Harvey spoke a bit about the situation Monday morning (January 24) on his nationally syndicated radio show, The Steve Harvey Morning Show. When asked about his thoughts about his former wife’s actions, the 53-year old has this much to say:
“I know the truth,” declared Harvey to his listening audience. “But the matter is, the part that’s hurtful in this is my wife and children had to be drugged [sic] into this. If you’re going to be vindictive go ahead and aim it at me, but my son is coming in the room crying. And that’s also her son. So why you would do this?
“And I don’t even understand the purpose of it,” he continued. “I mean, I got you mad 12 years ago, that’s what we’re doing now? And here’s the thing that my father always taught me. He said, ‘Son there’s three sides to every story. It’s their side, it’s your side, and it’s the truth.’ And the truth ‘gon come out. Because see, once you go public then you allow people to start asking some other types of questions.
“So, I’m just more concerned about my son, who I happen to have total custody of, rights to all education and everything. He’s with us on the ship today. And he doesn’t deserve to have to answer questions like this from his friends. And it’s just… being inconsiderate of your own child.
“A lot of it is lies, but … a lot of celebrities get dogged out and pitched about and then there’s no repercussions behind the person who’s doing the pitching,” Harvey lamented on the airwaves.
“Here’s my job as a father to my son, I have taught him to be respectful of his mother and women overall. That’s what I’ve taught him. What he can’t do is see me going out making particular accusations and rants. It is still his mother and I’m his father,” he continued. “And it’s my job to raise him the right way. If I have custody of the child, which you have to wonder how that happened, then my job is to teach him by example. And he’s crying through this whole thing because his friends called and his sister found it on the internet at the same time. And it’s just horrible. But it is what it is, I’m good. I appreciate all the support … the people that’s going to hate you they’re just looking for something to hate you for anyway. You could do me all you want, I don’t care what you say about me. But my wife and kids are off limits, I tell people all the time.”
When asked about his ex-wife’s motives for bringing his actions to light:
“I mean it’s simple, she’s just keeping a promise that they made. ‘I’m going to divorce you and I’m going to ruin you,’” he stated, referring to what some spurned spouses say during a divorce. “That’s the promise that was made… But, Wynton’s with us and he’s doing well. If you want to pray for us then pray for Wynton. But things will be dealt with in the proper fashion this time. This time it’ll get dealt with in the proper fashion.” [Source]

Steve Harvey is an opportunist. I do not believe for one minute in his sincerity in giving advice to women regarding relationships. His ex-wife only spoke because he referred to her in the media and their marriage and this is her attempt to tell her side of the story; he already told his. No he didn’t deny he was unfaithful; but he should have swept around his own front door first. When 9 times out of 10 a judge grants custody of a child to a mother you really do have to wonder what Mary’s problem is. I have heard on several occassions how crazy she is, and this is no exception. I think the fact that Steve has custody of their son speaks volumes about Mary. There are plenty of people with plenty of money that go through divorces and the judge keeps the children in the home with the mother…whats different in this case?
I do not know the exact details of their divorce. Steve might be a good father to their son. It does not mean that he was a good husband to Mary. Steve Harver have millions of dollars, his own radio show, Best-Selling books and etc. He also have the potential to make more millions of dollars. Mary DON’T! Yet, he wants to sue Mary because a deal when bad between him and Oprah. This is to much. Steve does not need Mary’s little money. Yet, he is suing her.
There were NO standard divorce proceedings, the divorce attorney was a personal friend of the family, that helped Steve persuade Mary that a private settlement was in the best interest of their son. He convinced her that he’d take care of their son till her broken heart healed (from his cheating) but she’d maintain rights to their son. He then slowly and systematically, came to her for signatures on custodial/parental documents, etc under the guise that this was only necessary while their son lived with him. He was also simultaneously, inserting Marjorie as the woman who actually loved and was there for him daily. Mary was devastated and suffering from depression, so she clearly had no FIGHT in her and quite frankly STILL does not seem to have fully recovered.
Please keep in mind that Mary was diagnosed with cancer at this time. She may have given him custody while she got her health together (never believing he would turn him against her). Also how many people have crazy mommas and have been raised by crazy mommas?!?!? (see all the hands raising) Unless she was causing him physical harm there is no way he shouldn’t be in her life.

You know when you choose to commit adultery, that is what really hurt your son. She is his mother regardless. If you guys cheated on her before divorcing her then you deserve it because you had a commitment. You still could have had controled yourself for 1 year while gettimg a divorce to move on to another woman instead of sneaking around and letting her find out the way she did. She probably got tired of keeping it all hidden after she was there before everything and he is still making it and she is struggling. Not sure reason he has full custody, might be that she felt she had nothing now and her son needs his father more to be a man. Whatever, adultery the problem here. That is why ladies dont build a man, he need to build himself because this happens time and time again. You will run yourself down and worn out look around you 50 and he will look up at another woman to reward all your hard work. Let him build himself and keep yourself looking hot in the process so if he do cut up, you can still got it enough to move and find you a mate instead of being angry at someone that is too selfish to care.

I am sure Steve wasnt all sweet in the courts. Motive most likely was to not pay child support to her if he raises his kid himself. Why is she not getting spousal support? did he swindle a prenup. I’m not signing nobody’s prenup for the same reason I wont contract with a gym, because folk get slack when you in a one sided agreement.

She did. She sued in 2007, because Steve wanted a quick divorce and she agreed. But they used the same family lawyer, so she thought he would have both their interest at heart. Of course he didn’t he screwed her out of any money and protected his lucrative client. I just believe she is doing what she has to do, now. Her son is not even in her life so maybe this Steve would force to change.

I was just on another site (The YBF) and one of the comments said this: I don’t know if everything Mary is saying is true, but I do know Steve had a mistress named Terry who wrote a book about their affair. He bought the rights to the book to keep it off the shelves and she sued him to be able to profit from her story. So the letter from Terry could be from Terry Smith his former mistress. A lot of what Mary is claiming Steve did to her, is very similar to what Terry claimed in her book. You are man of God, then you should of just pulled your ex wife to the side and really talk to her about things. If you respected her so much then why is she feeling the way she feels? I think the ex wife got tired of being discussed on radio in magazines. And anyone whose read an article on him or listened to his show knows this to be true. Honestly after he moved on and married his current wife, he should have never brought up the ex again. But he always references her saying how unhappy he was with her, how he finally got a wife God picked since he messed up when he picked the other two, etc. So it shouldn’t come as a big surprise when she does the same thing to him that he’s been doing to her since the divorce.

She lost custody because Steve could afford better attorneys, it’s as simple as that. After hearing him on the radio on Monday, I’ve decided to stop listening to his show. I’m back to Tom Joyner and thankfully, he’s still around.
As for him loosing a show with Oprah, obviously he didn’t deserve it in the first place.

I believe everything that’s is said-bc even the 1st wife was talking about how down bad he was and that she was coming out with a book. This book, from the 1st wife, was mentioned in VIBE or Ebony back some few years ago. I can’t remember her name- but I do remember the intro to the article and the writer said some badddd, but funny as hell, stuff about (William Stephen) Steve Harvey.
