Following the disappointing album sales of her sophomore studio album Love Me Back, R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan announced that she is calling it quits for a while and is taking a little break from the music business…or so it seemed.
The 22-year old vented her thoughts to her 91,000+ followers on Twitter on Sunday night (January 2) around 8pm EST, but then deleted them afterward. According to one source, her unedited tweets read the following:
“i’m making an official announcement that i am taking a break from music. i’m trying to figure out who i am… w/out a mike, paper or pen. i promised myself when it wasn’t fun anymore i wouldn’t do it. and here i am.
i’m not saying i wont ever sing again in my life becuz i dont believe that. but in this moment… rt now… i got some things to figure out.
i love u all and appreciate u soooooo much. u have no idea how much u’ve inspired me and fed my ego. but the truth is that i have to believe in me whether you all do or not. and thats what i’m lookin for. that belief in myself. me. I. i love us. thanks for being here for me and riding with me on this journey. let us continue.” [ SOURCE ]
Ironically, an unreleased synthesized-heavy track entitled “I’m Not A Robot” leaked this morning. The lyrics are about a mundane and exhausting life of someone who wants to get out of the game to find out who they really are.
So does this mean she’s leaving or staying? Hopefully she figures it out. Check out the Salaam Remi produced track below.
♫ Jazmine Sullivan – I’m Not A Robot

ooh no…Man, I love Jazmine. She is one of the very few artist who I really rock with and buy her albums. Luv Me Back is amazing. Man, this isn’t the best news to hear on my first day back at work.

hey CL any way you can stop the spam…? anyway i did not buy jazmine’s last album, because i did not feel it was strong enough…i did however purchase some of the songs that did not make the cut on the album like “can’t take another” and i will continue to listen to that and her previous material…i love jaz but she may need a different approach/team
that’s sad when a talented soul like hers wants to take a break from music. It’s a tough biz. you have a beautiful voice jazmine. Hurry back I dont want to hear a whole bunch of autotune chicks…
by the way jazmine release “dont make me wait” as a single. That is definately a great song. It will definately do well on the charts.
don’t care
yup Im right here with ya..the not caring zone
its funny how yall in the “dont care zone” but took the time out yall day to comment so it seems like you do care enough!
@STLOPINION lol, so true
Im already excited about her next album that she probably havent even started on yet but Im feeling the song.
Jazmin is a strong vocalist that is a mature/aquired taste. As usual, the labels didn’t know what to do with her talent. They tried to make her a Mary J rather than a Jill Scott. Putting her on the tour circuit was the best thing they did, but her imaging and radio play was off.
She should stay being a touring musician and not wory about album sales. Tour money is bigger anyway. Ticket sales and touring is a more solid path and money maker for her.
Stick with us Jazmin and do you! Perform for your fans and dont worry about the other BS!
Plenty of musicians u have never hear of make big money touring the world. The radio and the fickle mainstream fans are becoming less and less important.
In the end find YOUR voice and make YOUR music. Dont try to create for the masses. Create from your heart and your masses will come!
I wouldn’t say Jazmine and Jill are the same type of artist completely but Jill is a perfect example of the type of power and originality that Jazmine truly brings I feel the industry has her looking much like this song says a robot when I use to watch her rock Philly like crazy and you were just amazed by that voice the band the whole nine.
And don’t hate what she’s putting out there now but just feel there is soooo much more to her talent than what the world sees and they’re trying to create her for an audience that won’t appreciate her anyway, if she was treated more like a Jill than a Mary forget it her career would be crazy right now…..at the Jill level that is:)
that’s true and that was so good about what you said
Maybe the illuminati are after her. Wouldn’t suprprise me lol
This definitely sucks. I love Jazmine’s music and love her last album (one of the few albums that I actually bought last year). I hope she finds what she needs to continue her music because her talent will definitely be missed.
NOOOOOOO……YALL NEED TO GO BUY HER ALBUM. DONT BOOTLEG IT SHE HAS SOME GOOD MUSIC AND A GREAT VOICE. YOU CAN LISTEN TO HER WHOLE ALBUM. MY FAVORITES OR LOVE ME LONGTIME, GOOD ENOUGH, FAMOUS, DONT MAKE ME WAIT, AND U GET ON MY DAMN NERVES DUET WITH NEYO…..BUT ALL THE SONGS ARE AWESOME. YALL SLEEPING ON JAZMINE.
She will definately be missed, but everyone deserves happiness.
i hope she comes back with a better, brighter attitude with her music. she’s been giving me early gloomy, depressed mary j blige teas.BUT ii love her and wish nothing but the best for her.
To be honest, I didn’t know her new album dropped already. If the sales are low, I blame her management camp. There was like hardly any promotion for her album imo. If she decides to leave, I hope it’s for the right reasons (meaning she’s not happy anymore) and I wish her the best.
Jazz had no promotion….but def one of the best albums of 2010.
Im a twitter head, and I understand how sometimes we tweet ish jus because we’re feeling a certain way at the moment. Im sure she has a contract she has to uphold. I doubt she’ll take a break…and if so, i doubt it will be a long break.
I love Jaz…be rockin with her since i heard in 06. Love Me Back is a BEASTY album.
I’m sad: One because although I <3 her music and voice, I failed to purchase this last one. I know to some, I may seem like I'm taking it personal; but I feel passionate about someone's craft whom I've benefited from. And her young, raw, heartfelt talent is needed in this industry. So I say to her, I will purchase your album today, girlfriendzzz- Keep the music going because ur fans are still here
man oh man this industry called music what more can i say,,i dont think she should’ve called it a quits tho,but hey i guess music just ant the same,,some one needs to truly press the rest button,,,but who shall it be hint hint
That “I’m Not A Robot” is a very introspective record! The industry and this world a like has us all lost and going through our life like robots. I know i’m on a search to find out who I really am and from whence I came. Our history has been taken from us and I commend her for this. Despite what the media, pop culture, etc tells us fame, fortune, etc is not success or our destination. This life is a big distraction that constantly is keeping us from our true selves.
Cee-lo and Common had a song abt 15 years back b4 the went commercial and began rapping about meaningless things. It was title G.O.D. (Gaining one’s definition). Cee-lo said the following,
“I’ve finally come to the realization why Black people are in the worse place, Cuz it’s hard to correct yourself when you don’t know
Who you are in the first place”
Once again congrats sister, and I encourage us all to seek the truth and for us “black” ppl to find out who we really are b/c that was taking from us a great time ago and that is why our race is constantly searching for our truth (and hip hop culture is not it).
I like the song…Jasmine Sullivan has an excellent voice—she doesn’t over-sing or under-sing(if that’s a word). She’sa great talent
Let’s be honest she has not done anything we haven’t heard a billion times before. And her single was basically somethin I woulda turned back in 1995 when that style of boring music was in. Lets face it R&B sucks!!!!!!! It has not evolved in years and is simply a novelty act. That’s what happens with a genre where only .005 % of the lyrics and songs are written by and for the artist singing them. Even the underground subsoul genre is redundant now. Maxwell had took take off 7 years to reboot and with good measure because the lyrics of pretty wings are to artful ly intelligent and passionate for fans Trey songs, usher, dream, mary j, etc. Anyway it is what it is and unless r&b has a renaissance it will disco itself out. If you want real music listen to alternative, and indie because it’s a genre less genre that encompasses sounds and styles from anywhere and anything and a lot of it is original
first off, R&B/Soul is the genre where mostly ALL of the artists write their music not vice versa, majority of POP STARS dont write their own music so maybe you should be complaining bout them. second off jazmine sullivan wrote ALL of her songs on her last two albums (check the credits) & her lyrics are better than majority of artists out right now, anyway its not only about lyrics vocal ability is a main factor, no one can sing like her && if you’ve seen her live you’d know what i was talking bout half the artists out right now are alright but they cant SING i honestly believe ur prolly just caught up in these gimicks in the music industry but anyway, if you dnt like r&b of course ur not gonna like jazmine sullivan so why do you feel the need to talk about it?
Are you serious!!!!!!!!!!!! First off I know jazmine is writes her stuff that’s how she got on writing for other people so I wasn’t referring to her and NOBODY but a few writes there own songs in r and b. If that wasnt the case then why are neyo, dream, bryan cox, ester dean on all of the major artists credits?!?!?!
As far as jazmine goes her stuff is boring and not evolving. Look at the 2 singles she released nothing special about them. And vocal ability is just entry level to being able to do your job. Go to any black church in the south for reference. It’s the melodic arrangement of the song that makes it good and r and b used to understand that neo soul used to understand that but like black culture in general art and evolution halted years ago.
I think Jazmine wanted the career and was smart enough to know putting out everything at the degree she’s capable of wouldn’t have gotten her there. We’d hear her/of her even less if she put out the music she did underground.
But also if you’re just not a fan of R&B your opinion is going to be a biased one. There comes a point where anything can become repetitive and uncreative if you look at it that way. Althought I haven’t liked everything Jazmine put out on her two releases I’ve had to give it up for her bringing some creativity to the same ole story.
And if you didn’t like the music from the 90′s again mmmm yeah you’re probably just not going to like her that’s like me judging Elton John’s music I’m not into his music nor would I be so why am I talking about how bad he is?
what about alicia keys she’s a real musician she’s really dope
I love Jaszmine Sullivan, she is a talented artist. She probably needs new management, and market herself as a brand. The music industry is different now, and if you are not a gimmick you will not have radio success. She should continue to tour, and redifine what success is to herself, and be true too her music. Also go independent, and start your own label it’s 2011 and being owned by a label is old-news.
She is real talented. She should go independent, and promote herself. Go on tour that’s where the money is. The music business is not what it use too be. Artist make no money when tied to labels. Go over seas, and they will appreciate you more as well. Please find your happiness, and keep bringing us great music.
Didn’t like her anyway…next
Welp I hope she not unhappy because her album flopped. If you love music that should not stop you from doing it. Flop and keep it pushing. Never give up cuz in this biz only the strongest survive. This new album was just not as good as the 1st and she’s probably having to do what the label is telling her to do which is making her unhappy. And I don’t believe the illuminati is after her lol. At the end of the day though, these illuminati people seem more content with their careers and music than the ones that are not and the illuminati ones are supposedly the real puppets in the industry. Hmm
She’s only 22 ???
I like her thoughh, hopefully she’s not really taking abreak.
can you blame her? the industry is all types of whack and just promoting whoever they feel is popular or hot right now..whether they can sing or not…
She’s a great artist, but she still hasn’t found the right image and style. It bounces around too much.
Do what ya gotta do J but the Robot song is hot and unique. i will bump it.
I LOVE Jazmine Sullvan BUT I don’t like her new songs. She has talent as a writer but she still needs a cowriter and R&B doesnt have strong writers right now to mentor her ….
She needs to study the ART of WRITING b/c her songs are just OK… she need a concept album
She also needs a new manager. Keyshia Cole, Keri Hilson, Ciara & Niki Minaj had much BETTER promotion than she had…. and she is the most talented of them all
I’ll never forget the 1st tume I heard her voice…. WOW.
you should listen to her albums because she has some great concept songs like redemption(love me back album) call me guilty(fearless album) and many more. and her label isn’t promoting her like the more commercial artists that you’ve stated b/c of her weight they feel like she is “unmarketable” b/c some ppl(critics) think she’s too big in weight to sell records, smh.
I agree w/ you. Her songs are either great or bad…no gray area. Anways, I’m so annoyed that everytime an artist doesn’t get good cd sales they start ranting and “giving up.” Now, I’m a fan of Jazmine but to be honest, the cd was just okay…there are about 3 songs I like and the others…well, not so much. She has great voice, but this twitter rant turned me off. As opposed to “going on a break” how about putting out a stronger cd and keep trying until you get it right. I will always support her cd’s because her voice is great, but this twitter thing really annoyed me.
@ jacci_is_juno People are just assuming she’s leaving due to her sales oppose to the reasons she gave. Who can really say?
Hopefully it is just a publicity stunt tho and she’s not going anywhere.
Ill miss her but she gotta do what she do, I rather her find herself than to be under control like Rihanna…
One of the BEST albums of 2010. LUV ME BACK, I’ve been rocking it everyday since it came out. Who said “Don’t make me wait” is the next single?? That’s my song.
Music sucks and if we lose real talented artist like Jazzy then yeah I guess I’ll just stick to my parents music.
Sooo she’s mad because she flopping? They always get mad and start going off on the industry when the money stop rolling in. You don’t hear Beyonce complaining.
Sooo she’s mad because she flopping? They always get mad and start going off on the industry when the money stop rolling in. You don’t hear Beyonce complaining.
I think she should stick to overseas crowds because Americans are easily fooled, and there tends be a lack of appreciation for true talent. Americans usually fall for that gimmicky watered down music. I mean c’mon, how did we go from A Tribe Called Quest to Soulja Boy?
Idk …But you are totally right
I see what you’re saying but people over seas are stupid too! Gimmicky artists with shallow, materialistic, and immature lyrics such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kesha, Britney Spears ect. sell like crazy over there as well. Yea they have many artists over there who can succeed with “real music” but they are guilty of supporting these manufactured acts as well.
you are sooooo right, i don’t understand how ppl could truly be oblivious to the fact that they’re buying into these commercial artists where most(not all) don’t have any talent AT ALL
Wow, I sure hate to hear this….. I love her music!!! Thanks CL!!!
bye!
This is quite a shock. We don’t really hear music artists announce that they are giving up on music or taking a long break. To be honest, I think that Jasmine Sullivan is a horrible singer. All she does is yell and scream her damn songs. Just about all of her singles are sampled and she has generic love/hate R&B lyrics. With that said, I wasn’t mad at her for being in the music industry. She was putting out real music and actually singing from her heart. It’s crazy how record labels spend so much time on gimmicks who can’t sing worth a lick or have an average singing voice with bubblegum lyrics. Jasmine’s mistake was not having a good manager. Note to singers who want to be successful with making real music…. you gotta have the best manager and publicist that money can buy. Alicia Keys came out at a time when real music was still in and music networks supported her, but she’s still a good example for real musicians of today who want to succeed.
She just has a unique voice, not that she yells her range has been limited I must say but she can blow trust.
Horrible singer! Hold up now that’s where I draw the line… I didnt even read anymore of your comment after that. Jazmine sullivan is a beast in singing , Just giving to u straight. You tried her
Until people stop supported the untalented, then the naturally talented will suffer. Shes better than alot of chick out their yet she hardly gets acknowledged at award shows and things of that nature. Thats obvious and its corny. Never knew nakedness, screaming and oversinging and swaggerjacking would trump originality and a great voice. Thats what folks ( not all ) prefer and buy and that is what the industry is gonna keep on pushing down throats. Stop saying wack ass people are hot and give props and respect when & where its due, Jazmine has a beatiful voice and she is obviously talented and I really will hate to see her go. I understand what she is saying tho, I just hope that she finds her happiness and doesnt stay away to long. Man o man is the industry and music going to sh!t.

The truth is in her statement. “You guys fed my ego” and now her ego has been crushed because she isn’t doing as well as she thought she would do, because it seemed like since she was the next big thing in music all should flock to her. No! Jazmine’s voice has never been anything spectacular to me. I listen to gospel music and she sounded like a broken down Kiki Sheard/J. Moss mix. She is only a wonder to those who don’t listen to different types of vocalist. She is not the truth! She is only ok. She is a secular gospel singer. The best thing about Jazmine was the backing she had from the Marvelous Missy Elliott. Even Sasha Allen could out sing her.
My thing is you’ve only been doing this for two years and you are already lost? You’ve lost your zeal? Really? Patti, Gladys, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Brandy & Monica have really gone through stuff that would give them absolute right to quit and you the glorified one are through because of record sales!! Child please.
Nicely put and great point of view. I agree… I think Jaz just needs to find her vein and stay in it. Muck like Lalah Hathaway… find what works for you and stick to it… her fans will be her fans… she’ll never be a ginormous star, but if she sings for the love of singing vs. the fame of man, she’ll do well.
Check out her youtube videos of her singing at age 11, age 14, age 15, and I think another at age 11 or 12 and tell me that chile can’t sing. Jaz has been doing this for a long long time, you’re just seeing her and therefore you’re comparing her to those that have been visible longer. And those artists you’ve named are fans themselves of her voice. She sounds absolutely nothing like Kiki and J Mos. They can do the Kim comparison all day but come on now u just trying to sound like you got some sort of insider secret with that one.
You don’t know the ins and outs of her life to say why she’s leaving or what qualifies her to.
I think jazz is one of the most talented artist right now in the industry. She is another Aretha Franklin. But i think Jazz has a mind of her own and she wants out of the game. She hasn’t sold her soul like many other artist. She probally is starting to see the evil workings in the industry and before she gets to deeply involved in it she decided to get out now. Its not always about the music or the money.. Its about self-respect and refusing to be controlled be the industry and illuminati. If you don’t believe me watch the movie Josie and the pussycats.
I think Jasmine has an amazing talent but it is not for commercial production. The songs leaked on the internet prior to her first release were mesmerizing but both CD’s lacked the soul of Silent Tears, Braid Your Hair, her cover of Round Midnight, and In Love With Another Man. I’m not saying she needs to ditch the dance tracks all together but she needs a formula that works for her – the right producers, writers, collaborations, etc. She can stand to learn a lesson from Eric Roberson, mainstream didn’t work for him so he did his own thing and although he doesn’t see the success level of let’s say a Trey Songz… his fans love and support him and his fan base grows regularly… I’m just saying Jaz needs to consult God and the masterminds of music outside of the mainstream to find her true love for music again.
So clearly she’s coming to terms with real listeners of music know about her style: it’s a rip-off of someone else. She gave you Lauryn the first album, Mary this album…I mean, if it’s not evident someone is telling her how she should be…I’ve seen her before she was big and this is not the Jazmine I remembered, so I was over her the first album. Well I hope she finds herself.

Thats my song right their!
I understand were she comin frum it piss you off when you work hard nd dot get yur props for you hard nd hard successful albums and a successful writer and get nominated for 8 awards nd anit win 1 award
I think the track is expectionally hot. So, I’m kind of disappointed to just be hearing this. But I hope she’s able to find some ground outside of the industry. I think she has a calling to perform, however.
