MAG FEATURE: THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF NICKI MINAJ IN NME

Popular UK music magazine NME presents The Gospel According to Nicki Minaj in its February 12 issue which details the 10 commandments of the GRAMMY nominee. Click the image above for a bigger view, but they’re all listed below as well as a few snippets.

1. If thou is born with it, thou is born with it.
2. Thou shalt walk tall.
3. Thou shalt keep it clean.
4. Thou shalt be what thee sayeth.
5. Thou shalt not get caught.
6. Thou shalt remember what thou hast to lose.
7. Thou shalt always graft.
8. Thou shalt have no regrets.
9. Thou shalt not double cross.
10. Thou shalt exercise restraint.

Nicki Minaj on being born with it:
I think people are born with star power. I do think that there is something inside of people that when they’re born they’re ambitious. I feel like I was going to win, whatever I have to go through. I’m not gonna let up on it.

Nicki Minaj on empowerment:
Girls tell me this all the time: ‘Whenever I feel like a bad bitch I play your music’. I want girls to get confidence listening to me; I want them to feel like they don’t have to play second fiddle to a boy. ‘I am not Jasmine, I’m Aladdin’. That’s the first line of my album. Treat me just like you treat the boys, I’m strong, I’m capable, I’m just like them. I can hold my own, and that’s what I want girls to take away. Someone told that to me the other day, ‘You’re not the underdog anymore, Nicki.’ I had to really soak that in, like, ‘What? I’m not the underdog anymore?’ I have to say, you know what, maybe I’m not the underdog anymore. We have to be able to say that, and own it. Absolutely own it. When girls walk out on the street they need to know that if someone doesn’t like them, or doesn’t like their face or their body or whatever, it doesn’t matter.

Nicki Minaj on toning it down:
If you listen to my album, compared to my early mixtapes, a lot has changed. I mean, I really toned down the sexual stuff. There was no need for me to do it, I feel like in the past females have kinda relied on that because they feel like that’s all they have to offer.

Nicki Minaj on being Nicki Minaj:
The more people mocked my individualities, the more I wanted to play on them. ‘Oh, you don’t like my weird voice?’ I’m gonna do it more and more and I’m gonna show you that you’ll love this fucking weird-ass voice! And you’re going to learn to love me opening my eyes and pulling my weird-ass faces because I notice, like, ever since I was little, if I know that something annoys you I’m gonna do it more and more. I wanna get a reaction, I was like that when I was little and it wasn’t a great thing because me and my brother, well, my little brother would beat me up all the time because of it!

Nicki Minaj on love:
I have no romance in my life at all, and it’s not important to me right now. I have love for people who are on my team that I see every day and for my family, that’s what makes me do what I do. I also have love for people that I interact with. If I have too much of the romantic love, I feel like it will distract me. Right now I feel like a robot.

Oh really, Nicki? Lil’ Kim already had a song called “10 Commandments” booooo. Try again mommy!

Hey I don’t think this was a song, I think it was just the angle the reporter used to write about Nicki’s work ethic. Actually after reading the first couple lines I saw that they used the word ‘savior’ in reference to Nicki and the commandments as her ‘gospel’ and that really turns me off. I don’t like to see religous imagery mixed into entertainment like that.

    • Getem

I agree! She could have left out the religious connotations.

    • SARCASMIC

THIS WHOLE THING IS STUPID. WHAT’S THE POINT?

  2. DIORULEUX

    who is she again?

  3. Danielle1

I’m not a huge Nicki Minaj fan- the voices and personalities really turn me off- however I liked what she said about empowerment –
Whenever I read an excerpt from interviews with her, I feel like she always has something worth saying.
All the best to her :)

What is wrong in this world? Since when it’s okay and worse than that, it’s normal to refer girls as ‘bitches’? Girls never like to be called ‘bitches’ but they are pleased as soon as they’re called ‘bad bitches’ -__- in ‘bad bitches’ there is ‘bitches’! It seems to me ‘bitch’ is the new word to say ‘girl’, when did this become official and alright? What are we teaching those kids and ourselves? Women give birth & refering thme as bitches, even bad bitches IS NOT RIGHT, degrading and ignorant to me.

Go Nicki. I was feeling the interview, especially when she’s talking about empowerment. I still don’t care for her music though, but I’m definently looking forward to seeing her in some films. I’m glad she’s getting so much success. Go Girl!

    • She is a star

Nicki is trying to get paid. I am not mad at her. Pink Friday is #1 in the country. Her lipstick sells out online. She is making moves. It good to see a female rapper on top for change.
