‘ROUND THE WAY: HYPE WILLIAMS RIPPED FRENCH FILM FOR “ALL OF THE LIGHTS” VIDEO?

February 23rd, 2011

The new video for Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” premiered over the weekend, but many are saying it’s not all that new. The video above is the opening to the 2009 French film Enter the Void which some claim director Hype Williams copied to create “All of the Lights”.

    Stills to a direct copy, no changes what so ever. That’s stealing.

      Kanye = Sample King
      Riyawana = CopyCat Queen

      Both of their careers are built on the backs of others. Esp Riyawna who still walks with a Beyonce blueprint.

      From my perspective as a film student, it not stealing at all.

      We talk about things like this all the time in class. It’s not stealing at all. It’s an homage. Trust me it’s done ALL the time; you just are unaware of it. It can be done with anything: conceptual, editing, shots, camera movements, or the way he did it.

      I see things like this in current movies. Directors give homages to directors in their films.

      It’s far from stealing people; it’s called an HOMAGE.

      I agree. The letter of the law states as long as there is at least 25% change it is perfectly legal. Besides, how many people here would know about Gaspar Noé or “Enter the Void” if there wasn’t an American homage?

    Hype’s ripping off films, that other director Melina ripped off photo shoots from David LaChapelle for Rihanna’s video…what’s the point in these directors getting so much $$$ and they can’t do their actual job? There’s plenty of the up and coming creative youth in high schools and colleges who actually have new ideas and would love to have opportunities in the industry…not to mention they’d cost less than using these overpriced hacks.

    I knew it was a copy the moment i saw “All of the Lights” just like Rihanna’s S&M video is copied from David LaChapelle’s vogue spread.

    no idea is organic…creativity does not denote authenticity. there is NO original. therefore, I do not see any copying.

    ….there is nothing new under the sun. ( i just “copied” the Bible) 0_o

    “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination…And dont bother concealing your thieverycelebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: Its not where you take things fromits where you take them to.”

    Well, there goes another lawsuit. In Hype’s defense, he didn’t use the same idea throughout the entire video like Melina did. There’s still going to another lawsuit due to the scenes he did copy.

    ok but i can name a list full of r@B rock and rap videos that come from movie concepts so this is nothing new. they usually copy from American movies so people may feel like they have been deceived because they never seen it before

    Nothing can be claimed as original nowadays. Every one is inspired by everyone. You give credit, you’ll be fine i believe. If hype just puts “concept inspiration by” i the credits he wouldnt get bashed in.
