( ARTWORK BY: KNEX )

March 9, 2011 marks the 14th Anniversary of the death of rapper Christopher “the Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace. In remembrance of this dope story teller, the Concrete Loop contributors are posting our favorite Biggie tracks and why we like them. Keep reading…

ANGEL’S FAVORITE BIGGIE SONG IS
“ONE MORE CHANCE (STAY WITH ME REMIX)”

This is one of the first Biggie songs I ever heard. Growing up all we could listen to was gospel and I stole one of my brother’s rap mixtapes (but they were cassette tapes back then) and this song was on it. I was about 10 at the time and wanted to hear more from the dude that “flowed over the song so nicely” (as I put it back then). This song never gets old, the video was classic and it’s always on my chill or BBQ playlists.

FELICIA’S FAVORITE BIGGIE SONG IS
“UNBELIEVABLE”

♫ Notorious B.I.G. – “Unbelievable”

Juicy would be an obvious answer for the nostalgia alone but the one B.I.G track I could and do listen to every single day would have to be Unbelievable. Its storytelling and word play at its very finest and is the quintessential street anthem that was felt from Brooklyn and beyond. You can feel Biggie’s music, it goes beyond just being a song – its a memory. Its skipping class with my best friend to listen to Ready To Die in his walkman to now over 10 years later listening to it on deadline day to get me motivated to work. Its Brooklyn and its Biggie.

CHRISTINE’S FAVORITE BIGGIE SONG IS
“MO MONEY MO PROBLEMS”

I can remember the very first time I heard this song. It was a hot summer day in NYC and my family and I had been in town for a family reunion. As usual everyone wanted control over the car stereo. We all finally came to a group decision, flipped thru the radio dial and landed on 107.5FM. Before I knew it, the song blaring out of the speakers made me want to just dance and sing at the top of my lungs! It felt so good! I remember the music video hitting Shortly after, a music video came out for “Mo Money Mo Problems” and it made me love the track even more. Even at the tender age of 11, I would rap along with the Notorious One. Biggie’s verse was so raw, you’d swear he was still alive…

BRIAN’S FAVORITE BIGGIE SONG IS
“F*CKIN’ YOU TONIGHT”

♫ Notorious B.I.G. – “F*ckin’ You Tonight (ft. R. Kelly)

It just reminds me so much of my sister and hanging with her friends, thinking that I’m a little more grown than I realize. It takes me back to her borrowing my dad’s convertible Mercedes and taking rides in the summertime.

J. DAKAR’S FAVORITE BIGGIE SONG IS
“SKY’S THE LIMIT”

Is it coincidence that the last single from Biggie’s last studio album just happens to be one of hip hop’s ultimate inspirational and motivational tracks? Maybe, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great song with a great message about striving for what it is you want out of life by one of the greatest rappers of all-time. Plus, the video was pretty cool with the kids in it, which helped to reinforce the message. It’s hard to believe it’s been fourteen years, though, but in a way, he comes to life every time I hear this song.

The verse in Flavah In Your Ear has to be one of the greatest of all time. Same goes with his verse in Diddy’s song “Victory”…he really was/is the nicest emcee. Hands down.

Sky is the limit is my most fav, then the 10 Crack Commandments, One more Chance, Can’t you See (Ft Total), Get Money (Junior Mafia), Hypnotized and too many to name..BIG and will always be the illest EMCEE ever~. His only mistake is telling Puff he can rap and not telling Lil Kim he loved her enough (so she could had stopped messing her looks up)…R.I.P. B.I.G.!

Biggie was and is the greatest of all time. There are too many Biggie songs to name as a favorite. But one that sticks out to me that no one has mentioned is the collabo he did with R Kelly called To Be Happy. Thats is a classic also. I miss that dude. RIP Big.
