Do you remember Jhene Aiko? She was once signed to Chris Stoke’s T.U.G. label alongside B2K and was cross-promoted with the group for a lot of her releases. An album never came out and Jhene took a break to finish her education and have a baby with Omarion’s younger brother, O’Ryan, who is commonly known as Sonny Ocean O. Well, Jhene is back with a new mixtape entitled Sailing Soul(s).

Sailing Soul(s) contains productions by The Fisticuffs, Bei Maejor, Roosevelt and more. The mixtape also features impressive collaborations from Miguel, Drake and Kanye West, to name a few. She recently released the tape via her official website, JheneAiko.com. There’s not really any official word on what’s going on as far as her situation or if she’s releasing an album, but with this mixtape, it seems as though she’s trying to generate a buzz for something.

Seriously though, her mixtape is one of the freshest things I’ve heard in awhile. Really surprising. Her voice has matured so much from back when she was signed with TUG. “My Mine” is my favorite song on the mixtape, but the entire thing can be played without skipping a record. I’m looking forward to her releasing an official album. I kind of would prefer for her to get with some kind of indie label, because I feel like a major label would put her on the back burner.

This mixtape is dope. Hopefully she’ll take this little buzz and run with it because the whole pop/sexy movement is fading (c.c. Rihanna and Ciara). I think a more neo-soul/pop R&B movement is on the rise (c.c. Marsha Ambrosious) and there’s very little competition in the market at the moment. I think she’ll do fine. She needs to start performing at small venues around the country and re introduce herself as a more mature artist.

I can’t listen to the mixtape right now, BUT WOW, I HAVEN’T HEARD FROM HER IN FOREVER! I’m surprised she’s still trying. If y’all didn’t know, she’s actually a mom. She had her son when she was just 21 years old and that was a few years ago. Back then, her voice was so irritating; if a fly could sing, her voice would sound like its, but I have to hear if she has improved. TUG did her wrong and it’s hard as I don’t know what to get on a sincere and successful label, so I doubt it if she will ever really have a singing career, but again, I’ll check out the tape later.
She doesn’t have a son, she has a daughter.

What in the world? I am really starting to think that a bunch of Jhene’s “people” came here just to hype up this mixtape. I finally got a chance to listen to it and this –hit is hella boring, and she has an extremely weak voice. She has a nice tone, but weak vocals. To be honest, she really can’t sing. She’s not even on Skeri Flopson’s level as far as vocals go. I actually think that she doesn’t sound anything like Cassie, she has a similar voice type, but sings better than Cassie and that’s not saying much. LOL. People say that the lyrics have meaning, but these are just the same lines that we hear in any other neo-soul/R&B track.
So because her voice is soft, it’s weak? To be honest I’d rather listen to some real/relatable shit by an artist that lacks vocal talent (even though Jhene doesn’t) than to listen to a catchy ass song with no lyrical content by the best singer in the world.

One thing about Jhene is that she is truly a FREE individual & her music is a reflection of who she is & the reason why her fans LOVE her. She made this mixtape for her fans and not to try to make a buzz or whatever ya’ll call it. She does what makes her happy & not what the world wants to hear. This is who she is & if you like it, you like itif you don’t, then that’s your opinion. Trust that her fanbase is bigger than you think ;p FREE LOVE either way.
