Looks like Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons and comedian/actor Bill Cosby had a run in last week at the Jackie Robinson Annual Awards Dinner held at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City (VIEW OUR POST ABOUT THE EVENT HERE).
Russell presented Sean “Diddy” Combs the ‘Renaissance Man of the Decade’ award and said as he went to apologize to Cosby about criticizing him last year, Bill responded by saying, “Get the FUCK out of my face” to Simmons.
Simmons wrote a long piece about the little episode on his blog and you can check out a snippet below:
Bill Cosby was staying off the stage, although I had seen him as Master of Ceremonies all night. He was not present as I stood on stage prepared to give Sean Combs the “Renaissance Man Of The Decade, ” his well-deserved award at the annual Jackie Robinson foundation event.
Sean had delivered from Broadway to Hollywood to music to fashion to liquor and countless other industries plus done so much social political and philanthropic work in his young career.He has been a true role model to me.
So there I was about to give the man of the hour his award but still I wondered where Bill was. I knew I had once said he was too judgmental of black folks and especially rappers, but I also knew for sure that he had dedicated his life to the betterment of our people and I have come to understand his feelings that we and the next generation had let him down. We didn’t march through the doors he, Harry Belafonte and the Civil Rights movement opened.
When I look back, I feel remorse for judging him. And it has been a source of a “rap beef” for years. He has been critical of the poets but I have maintained that the entertainment, especially most of the poets, are simple reflections of cultures of truth.
Anyhow, I wanted to find him to apologize to tell him I was sorry about my statements and to tell him that I loved him. Suddenly I turned and he was behind the curtain and I said “I love you” and he responded on some real hip-hop, “Get the fuck out my face!”
His next move was straight up old school pre b-boy hood shit. He walked by me and bumped me with his shoulder as I walked off stage after presenting my award to Sean, just like the cool ass character in “Let’s Do It Again.” I then loved him even more. If Russell really wanted to apologize to Bill Cosby he would have done it a year ago…he was just trying to save face for doggin’ Bill out…with his post I realzed he was not at all genuine plus Russell pulled an old church folk move…by saying out one sied of his mouth he loved Bill then trashed him out the other…sad and wrong.

My parents (New Yorkers) met Bill Cosby on a missionary trip to DC back in the 80s. He acted like they were the scum of the earth, like b/c they were IN that neighborhood they were aimless trash. But they were just wholesome fans excitingly saying hello while trying to spread God’s love in a then abandoned neighborhood. BILL COSBY HAS NEVER BEEN A NICE PERSON. What in the world? That is very hypocritical for Bill to rant about how blacks need to stop using the N word and acting ghetto when he was very classless and nasty in public! I understand his frustration, but he didn’t have to do all of that.
With that said, I can’t stand Russell Simmons. He’s a hypocrite himself and is a poor example of a black, rich man. He’s smart, but how can he cuss up a storm and use vulgar language in every other word of his conversations? That makes him look very uneducated. Plus, he has anger issues and humiliates himself on TV and in interviews. Diddy is also the same way. He doesn’t deserve this award. I will never support that –tch because I’ve watched him humiliate and ruin his artists’ dreams for years on television. Does everyone know that Diddy changed Dirty Money to Diddy/Dirty Money? What a big ago. He only cares about himself. Not to mention he’s two-faced and very inarticulate. I swear, all of these rap/hip-hop moguls got famous because of luck and trends. It was the right time, right place that got them where they are now.

Well we don’t know if Bill Cosby was being humorous when he did all that. I’ve seen him on a show recently and he was delivering some deadpan humor that if you didn’t pick up on it, then you’d think he was being serious.
But, if he was being serious with Russell, then so what? Russell kind of walked right into that lion pit…and he got bit. I think he knew there was a possibility his “nice” gesture might fail, and at least he took it in stride. Bill is a senior and seniors do not hide how they feel! LOL.

Seriously, Russell you disrespected the man then years later you want to apologize if you were remorse about the comment/beef than you should have contacted him before hand not wait when you saw him to apologize, it wasnt heartfelt. I would have told you the same thing plus the bump. We as people of color have not represented the previous generation well. Katrina, welfare, education, using n*gga, urban slag, drugs, the list goes on. Maybe with your so called power and money you can start a change by going into the neighborhoods of some of the most needed ones, visit historically black colleges and see what they need, donate your time, energy to the people. Wow, maybe Bill doubted his sincerity. Probably felt he was just saying it because they were at an event together or did he try to reach out before this event? Bill’s criticism of rappers is a truth alot dont want to accept. Its too explicit and degrade black women. Puffy may have done alot things, but it would be better if he married one of his women instead of having multiple baby mommas, like nasty lil wayne.
