Its true you don’t really see black people in Australia or the real Australians of Australia. I don’t feel offended as a black person I would like to now as well why that is.
@Voo – it’s because until very recently (the 1950s, I believe), Australia had a “White Australia” Immigration policy (i.e. they only accepted immigrants from European countries), then they started opening up to folks from the mediterranean, and finally when they started letting non-whites in, it was predominantly Asians. Only in about the 80s did refugees/immigrants from East Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia) start arriving in Australia, hence blacks are still only in very small numbers in Australia. You can google it for more info. As to the Aboriginals, the explanation is easy, the European settlers to Australia killed most of them and destroyed their culture. Those that remain are largely marginalized and relegated to reservations. Their story is almost identical to that of Native Americans. Alcoholism is a big problem in their communities as well.

The aborigines are aborigines. They are not “black”. Skin color does not denote seedline or ancestral origin. Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese all have similar physical characteristics, but they do not consider themselves the same people. Due to the fact that “black people” are usually absolutely ignorant about their history (due to being taught lies and simplicity by the Europeans), they like to claim races that already have their own distinction, based on simplicity like “skin color”.

If so, great and you can attest to the fact that black people are by no means ‘everywhere.’ In Australia they do refer to aboriginals as ‘black’ but obviously they are not the same ‘black’ as a person of African descent. If you’re only talking about skin tone, you could probably call many Indian people ‘black.’ Don’t act ignorant to the facts. Of the people of African decent that I did see (rarely), the majority were East Africans. Furthermore, trust me, you see about as many aboriginals in Australia as you see Native Americans in the U.S. (i.e. rarely to never). Go to the reservations where they are relegated and I am sure you’ll see them, but otherwise it’s needles in a haystack in large cities – and those I did see oftentimes were clearly mixed race. Sad story, but true. Their story mirrors that of native Americans.

Well I have also been to Australia and I have travelled all around the world as a West African and I can tell you from my perspective the Aborigines are not of black African descent like blacks in the Caribbean, Black Brazilians or Black Americans etc are. They don’t have our hair, our body types, our sense of rhythm or our voices and so I don’t see them as kin.
When I was in Australia I saw some Aborigines but they were very few and far between and while I respect and admire their culture they are not the same as Africans.

FYI: Barbados’ official language is English. My family is from there and I know first-hand that they put a great deal of emphasis on speaking proper English (or the Queen’s English). They do speak Bajan/’patois’ but that’s not what they learn in school. Out of curiosity, if Barbados’ first language is not English, what is it? No shade, just sayin’…

Of course everyone knows English is the official language of Barbados just like it is in many English Black colonies but informally and at home when people are chilling they are most likely to speak their patois or Bajan creole. I suspect if Rihanna has been chatting to best mate Melissa all day in her normal dialect it may be a bit of a task for her to go straight back into American English good enough for an interview on the world stage.
In a BBC interview late last year Rihanna said that she purposely tones down her accent and the way she speaks because it was getting to the point where she was being asked to record the same interview four or five times because nobody could understand what she was saying. However she does at times make still make some grammatical mistakes but then people like me don’t mind because that only makes her more real besides I think her accent is so cute.
The girl does try. And as I said, even though her ‘Broken English’ sometimes comes out in interviews, it doesn’t take away from the fact that she is highly intelligent.
