‘ROUND THE WAY: TYLER PERRY TELLS SPIKE LEE TO ‘GO STRAIGHT TO HELL!’ / STEVE HARVEY’S INTERN STEALS $10K FROM HIM?

So film directors got beef now? After receiving much criticism for his films and attempting to not dwell on the frustrating negativity, Tyler Perry is tired of holding his tongue, especially when it comes to Spike Lee and his comments about his work:

“I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee,” Perry said during a press conference Tuesday in Beverly Hills, Calif. “Spike can go straight to hell! You can print that. I am sick of him talking about me, I am sick of him saying, ‘this is a coon, this is a buffoon.’ I am sick of him talking about black people going to see movies. This is what he said: ‘you vote by what you see,’ as if black people don’t know what they want to see. [...] I am sick of him – he talked about Whoopi, he talked about Oprah, he talked about me, he talked about Clint Eastwood. Spike needs to shut the hell up!” [Source]

Tyler Perry is overSpikeLee.org! Lol

Steve Harvey’s Intern Allegedly Steals $10K

In other news, radio personality/author Steve Harvey is short $10,000 and believes his former Clark Atlanta University intern is to blame. According to the Atlanta Journal-Consistitution, a security video shows 22 year-old Kyle Reynolds entering Harvey’s office without authorization:

Reynolds told one of Harvey’s associates he just wanted to get a Coke, but the video shows him leaving the room without a soda in hand. The missing cash had been delivered just prior to the theft by a bank employee, the report states.

Questioned by his supervisor and Harvey, the intern claimed innocence. He later sent the supervisor a text message stating, “I am gonna get him the money just so I can end this,” according to police. [Source]

Lol Those sound like words of someone who’s guilty. Apparently Reynolds hasn’t returned to school and returned to New York after being questioned…smh…

On a brighter note, Harvey is making a film adaptation for his book Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man and is holding a casting call. Click here for more info!

  1. Phuck Steve Harvey!

Thatswassup Tyler & Phuck Steve Harvey!

    • mon

tp would be the coolest black man in hollywood but he likes men and constanly play in dresses sorry tp stans but im goin with uncle spike on this one after all he did make crooklyn & malcolm x. tp needs some substance to his movies not one of his movies will ever make sense it just yelling, coonin, melodrama, sterotypical black shit that only ppl with limited intelligence will appreciate. get em spike

    • asunkee

Spike Lee is right. That is all.

    • Haters

IDRIS SAID IT TOO TYLER AND HE WAS IN ONE OF YOUR MOVIES!!!

    • Haters

Real talk though it’s doubled edged – white directors make white trash films every 3 mos and they’ll sell but Blacks always have to be serious. Why can’t TP do him and we have Spike, Antoine, Denzel do the serious ones? I would like to see TP diversify but it’s really unfair.

    • Supporter

I cherish the contributions that all of our director/film makers/playwriters are making to the stream of consciousness. We who get it from the Spike Lee genre may not get it from Tyler Perry. Tyler from another point of view is meeting some of us right where we are and we get it! After all is said and done. The dialogue is healthy for all. We appreciate you both and we want you Both to keep on keeping on. Could it be that for some People, their issues, their dreams, and their visions for better lives have only one bible …. a day at the movies!

  2. Vee1

Weeeeeeellllll bout time he said what he really feels. A person even a christian can only take so much and turn the other cheek so many times before having to tell folks bout themselves. Like all of Spike Lee’s movies have been for the upliftment of black people and portrayed us in great roles. People kill me wanting to be so self righteous. Good for you TP!

  3. Shellbee

Coonery and buffoonery is precisely what it is. Keep it up and Spike will tell him to go suck a dick. What could Tylah say to that? LOL

    • darealit

@Shellbee–Tylah would say, “Heelloor”! LOL Tyler needs to attend film school and work on his craft. Spike and Tyler are the only Blacks making major motion pictures and that is the real shame.

  4. Yikes

Man Spike needs a “hoe sit down”, Yes, Malcom X was great, Do the right thing was CLASSIC, Mo betta blues and even jungle fever were good. But nigga that was the 90′s, and aside from bamboozled, your last few joints aint been that tuff.

I aint saying Tylers movies are great, but they are FUNNY and they do have a message. My Grandmother loves his shit and I go and see them with her every 5 months …..because unlike Spike, Tyler is putting out movies EVERY 5 months.

    Spike smells like give up.

    • PBS

      What about Inside Man?

    • smittyslilgirl

Couldn’t have said it better Yike, that’s what’s wrong with our Race “Always putting each other down” others race’s put out silly, countless movies and get much praise, but no we constantly put each other down………That’s why we can’t grow as 1

  5. NO YOU SHUT UP

TYLER AND OPRAH HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO MAKE GOOD MOVIES WITH OR WITHOUT BLACK PPL. IM SICK OF SEEING HIM STEREOTYPING BLACK PPL OR HAVING THESE DUMB MOVIES OR OVER-DRAMATIC ONES. DONT CARE IF HIS MOVIES MAKE YOU LAUGH. SPIKE DID MALCOLM X MOVIE. ENOUGH SAID.

    • Yikes

Um, lets not forget that Malcolm X was largely based on the Alex Haley novel of the same name. And while the Elija Mohamed character and Bains were great, it was Denzel who carried the movie…

And I seem to recall all sorts of “bafoonish, stereo typical depictions in all of Spikes movies. Lets start with the Haley Berry & Samuel L Jackson crack heads in Jungle Fever, Rosie Perez’s, sassy head wagging Latina in Do The Right Thing, the “typical” Korean store owners in the same movie, and of course his always “accurate” depictions of Italians in most of his films. All of whom are portraid as “gombas” who use the word N*gger all the time, talk with their hands and beat up their little daughters who sleep with black men. Then he always, in some form or another calls attention to the “light skin dark skin” thing, in his movies. Can anyone forget the dance number in school daze, were the light skin women dance off against the dark skin women, and make fun of them for having “kaka bugs, and what not in their hair. The point is, it that while Spike is certainly a better film maker, he uses stereotypical images of all races in his movies just as much.

  6. Mindstarter

I do agree that we need better movies that represent black people, but at the same time TP doesnt need to stop making his movies. I like TP & his movies, sometimes it’s over done but at the same time they truly represents black ppl in America, thats why so many black ppl (esp. the older ones)like them.

Spike Lee is just another black man trying to tear another black man down. Cant he just make his point w/o trying to bring others down…if he cant then he should do what TP says and shut the hell up.

  7. Cream Bmp

spike lee is HATING hard body on Tyler Perry, because he’s no longer relevant..doubt its about the movies at all…

Tornado Takes Burger, Fries & Drink RIGHT Out of Dudes Hand While He in the Car About to Eat.. – http://t.co/1b04KaY <–TOO FUNNY!

  8. Prentice

Well its not like Spike was lying. Tyler’s movies are buffoonish and 2 dimensional. They reaffirm stupidity that drags our culture down.. And I hate that his films are so one sided. They always side with the woman’s point of view. Where the stereotype is that “the man is always wrong” about everything and makes us seem like animals. Never a movie about a man’s everyday struggles and the quiet desparation men face in relationships and life.

    • Mahogany23

That is not true. “Daddy’s Girls” by Tyler Perry talked about Men and their struggles. The problem is simply this: Mind your business and don’t talk down about other people. If Spike Lee doesn’t like TP’s work…that is fine. That is his opinion, but why slander the man as if he did something wrong to him? SMH!

    • Prentice

Its the shameless ignorance that he brings with his movies. And oh and thats like 1 out of 10 films maybe. They dont enlighten on a philosophical level. Or challenge some of our cultures delusional ideologies. Its the same of what I call the ” oh I loves me some jesus, oh no you didnt, and you know black people loves some fried chicken ” type of movie. Im tired of this sh*t. How many black films have came out with that same premise ?.. You cant count can you ?

    • Amar Menes

If you all feel this way then we, as blacks, need to have more script writers creating the type of films we want to see and making proposals to have our films made. Though I agree that his films are “light”, I wouldn’t quite call them buffoonery; stereotypical, is a better suited word. I despised how he pinned a bisexual black man for giving his girlfriend HIV in his last film, continuing the ignorance of HIV/AIDS being spread from the gay to heterosexual community, but he’s a grown man and is doing what he wants to do with his own studio. Instead of us waiting for someone else to contribute to the education of the African diaspora, we (meaning all of us) need to find our own ways toward adding this information within our community.

    • Prentice

Indeed, his movies are quite stereotypical. And I honestly think it would be a split debate when it comes to “what blacks want to see”. I think that if we went on that basis then we would be at a stalemate. Some blacks unfortunately subscribe to buffoonery such as these types of films, while a slim few want something more than the typical depictions of black culture. The walls have already been broken down and there is much money in hollywood associated with black representation. The problem is that buffoonery brings more profit than enlightenment. So many in black hollywood stick to whats profitable.. We need movies that challenge and change our culture’s thinking. The type of film you want where the ignorant stereotypes about homosexuals are broken down.. If thats what you want then you wont be getting that from Tyler Perry. Remember that he was propelled by the evangelicals. And christians have the badge of having distain for homosexuals ( not saying that all christians are homophobic ). And im speaking as a person who doesnt believe. And alot of bigoted and homophobic remarks are spawn from that. Tyler couldnt make a movie like that because he would lose the christian rite. They are his secret to success, so he will make movies that side with the evangelicals. Because thats essentially his demographic.

  9. Gia

I still don’t like the mans(Perry) work, but I’m glad he finally stood up and told that angry little man(Lee) to sit down and shut the f*ck up.

  10. Dude-N-Htown

Spike has a right to have an opinion, and Tyler has a right to strike back.

Im not in love with all of TP movies, but I wasn’t in love with all of Spike Lee’s movie. Spike Lee makes valid points though. I just wonder how many of TP movies has he actually seen

SPIKE LEE MOVIES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BORING AND CHEAP LOOKING TO ME

  12. TRUTHBTOLD

i wish people would read more, then they would understand where Spike Lee and others alike are coming from with regard to the representation of Black folks on TV. These images don’t just happen in a vacuum, yall. They mean something and they have real, material consequences.

While I agree the larger issue remains how we are perceived and how that perception by the larger society impacts how we are treated, I do think it is important to note Mr. Perry has employed many known and unknown black entertainers. Many of the black actors/actreses in his movies get very little work in Hollywood if any at all.
      .
I apreciate the fact that we are not monolithic in our experiences or in our points of view. We need to respect that. Mr. Perry has been a beacon of light for the younger set, showing them that you can come from chaos and still make it by developing your talents, getting back up when life knocks you down, putting your people to work and serving a segment of your own that just wants to laugh and feel good.
      .
Being able to produce your own movies, in your own studio is very special as well. I think Mr. Lee deserves credit for paving the way. He should be mindful that his comments don’t feed into the stereotypical adage blacks are like “crabs in a barrell”

  13. ME ME

WELL EVERYONE HAVE THEIR OPINION BUT IT SEEMS LIKE SPIKE LEE IS A LITTLE JEALOUS…..——>AT THE END OF THE DAY, TP STILL GONNA BE BLESS AND MAKE HIS MONEY WHILE SOME OF YALL DON’T HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO BUT HATE!! GET A LIFE AND DO SOMETHING WITH YA LIFE AND INSTEADING OF HATING!!!!!!! YOU WON’T CHANGE AND WON’T TO SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT, BECOMING A FILM MAKER…… #POW

  14. ME ME

CUZ ONE THING ABOUT BABY, 2 THINGS FOR SHO, AND 3 THINGS I MF KNOW…. HE’S(TP) RICH AND YOUR NOT…..#POW

  15. Nick

Tell him Tyler., lil crack head spike lee!!! I can’t wait til Friday, support my black brother & see madea!!

  16. WHAT THE HELL

I love Tyler’s movies. They have a stroy and they make you laugh at the same time. The only Spike movie Iliked was Malcolm X.

Tyler keep doing what you do. It is what it is. Tyler making money and sowing it forward. He hires blacks and he gives to lot of charities.

  17. Allen_J

Who cares what white people and the media think of us. This is the problem. And this is why people think Tyler Perry’s movies should have more substance. Let him make the movies the he wants to make. IF YOU NEED MORE SUBSTANCE go watch old movies. It’s no different than the garbage music that comes out some people buy it some don’t.

  18. Kyla

If Steve Harvey’s intern really sent the supervisor a text like that then he’s an idiot. I can’t see anyone saying that .. if it was like $20 then maybe but if he didn’t steal the money – where would he get the $10,000 from ..

  19. LULU

Spike does take it overboard, but his opinion is kinda on point [where Tyler Perry is concerned]. His only point is the substance in the material. I think he’s even made comments in the past about his lack of technical training, and I think it all is an accurate assessment when you compare his work and background to those who have studied the art of film, have real stories to tell, etc. and this (Tyler Perry) is the current representation Black cinema has been reduced to. *sigh* As for Steve Harvey, guess he’s not having luck this year…good.

  20. Carolyn

Clark has some serious problems with their students. A copy of a check was sent by fax(per Clark’s request)for a student registration. Two days later the person’s checking account had unauthorized charges made. The person has had the checking account for over 40 years and never had a problem until a copy of a check was sent to Clark. I have heard the students at Clark steal from each other also.

  21. Big Med

Love him or hate him Tyler Perry is giving black people a lot of jobs in this terrible ass economy whether you call his movies cooning or buffoonery remember that everyone working is getting a check.

  22. ZZZZ

Tyler Perry is about as corny as they come. I am a lil surprised that for someone with churchy themes in almost all their movies and plays, that he’d tell someone to “go straight to hell” over some criticism. I guess forgiveness and turning one’s cheek goes out the window when you got a “hater”!!!

    • caramelapple

Tyler is probably tired of being nice about it and just blew off some steam because it is not just criticism, its a constant digging from Spike. Is Spike the black filmaker Godfatehr or something? The fans dictate what movies are most popular and for Tyler, its comedy that fans want. He has been involved in Precious and making Colored Girls. So Spike did not give hime credit for those. I guess Spike was saying that in this time, black filmamkers have not evolved much from that dont intimidate the white folks comedy roots that evolved during slavery to make whites feel non threatened and show lack of intellect. Which was done out of fear and survival. But we now have other blacks policing each other and imposing the same plantation dumbing down under the guise of “you talking white or acting white” to control and shift other blacks back to stereotypical “blackness” and black things. There is no such thing as black or white things or talking white, God made all things good in the world including the english language (when he separated people by languages) to be enjoyed by everyone. So, I go off on a black that tell me what white I’m doing, I like get behind me w/that black mess, you not going to black police me. But I want black directors to make shows and movies that no one knows it is a black director. The movies or titles dont scream black or white, its just a damn movie. That is why I like Will and Jada saying why cant Anne or the Karate Kid be black and do it. I see Tyler making movies like Narnia or the Titanic with black lead roles and nothing about it says color, its just a movie, period.

  23. JUDAH

The issue between Spike Lee and Tyler Perry is just a flare-up between a couple of Boule h*mosexuals. Spike Lee makes a relevant point about Tyler Perry’s movies, but he is saying it due to his jealousy. Spike Lee also made similar comments about John Singleton when he was stealing alot of Spike’s shine in the 1990′s.

  24. Blanco

Damn Spike.. let that man be. If you feel like he’s a coon make another “Malcolm X” or “Jungle Fever” if not then shut up. I’m not a huge fan of all of Tyler Perry’s work but don’t knock that man’s hustle.

  25. Bella Chick

Tyler Perry ain`t no real Christian,he says that he is but then he shacks up with young girls. Get`em Spike ! Spike might look like a geek but he will do a Bill Cosby on Tyler Perry, then Tyler can make a movie called How Medea Got BodySlammed and Her Wig Came Off !

  26. tee

Wow.com. That text message had “guilty” written all over it. The only way I’d be okay with giving away $10,000 is if it wasn’t mine to being with. Smh.

  27. SUBMIT TO ME

tracy morgan is the biggest coon on tv, will spikey call him out.

  28. Richard

I don’t know why people are getting so upset with Spike Lee. He is just expressing his opinion. Love him or hate him, Spike Lee is a highly respected director in the movie industy. So people need to stop playing Spike Lee just because he hasn’t made anything recently. I do agree that Tyler Perry movies repeat the same message, usually in an overdone fashion, but I can’t fault Tyler Perry for his success. In the future I can only hope the quality of Tyler Perry movies get better.

  29. TylerShowRespect

First off Taylor Perry needs to learn to sit back and take some criticism from poeople who made that path available for him to make movies and money. Spike Lee damn near sacraficied being killed to make strong political black movies that address and attacked white racism and supremecy.

It was hard to get Lees movies into thearters being that they addressed the ill behaviour of the very owners of the movie theaters and movie houses that were his opposition, which portrayed in his films and now it’s easy as butter for Taylor Perry to do what he does.

Lee is just like your Grandparents that you allow to curse your ass out and say what they want, eve if it’s abrasive, but it comes from love and concern. Just like when Bill Cosby does it, we hate to hear it, but it’s the truch and we respect him and move on, not tell him to go die somewhere.

Plus Taylor Perry is responding like a feminized emotional woman, like he does in his movies. To Tell someone to go somewhere and die is so womanly.

  30. RAPDIVA

Spike Lee is simply HATING. He comes of to me as jealous of the success that Tyler Perry has acheived recently and perhaps because his name is not mentioned amongst Tyler Perry’s as far as relevance!

To call his work cunnery is an insult to the people that go to watch it, which is majority black NOT white. It baffles me how a black man can put down another black man who has done nothing but wrong in the same breath that he speaks of bafoonery. Its a COMEDY movie and to compare it with a BIOGRAPHICAL film such as Malcolm X is ignorant.

I celebrate the success of Mr. Perry cause he does what he does well and his movies have been number one several times because people like to get away from reality and laugh sometimes!

Meet the Fockers is cool because Tyler Perry didnt do it right? but The Madea films are bad images? GTFOH……

    • Richard

But why does it have to be a black man putting another black man down. Spike is attacking Perry’s movie, not Perry himself. The comments here clearly show that other people feel the same way as Spike Lee. If that’s how Spike feels, that’s how he feels. He shouldn’t have to sugercoat his feeling because Tyler Perry is black.

  31. KEKELALA

Spike needs to chill out. Tyler Perry makes movies that are relevant to everyday life and hold a positive message despite the adversity of the conflict. Both Directors are extremely talented and are setting good examples for future black and otherwise directors and need to stick to doing what they do best; making d@mn good movies.

  32. caramelapple

That’s right Tyler! Spike is a old HATER. nothing worse than an old hater especially one that uses religion. Spike is a hater, and so was Jesse Jackson hating on Obama that time. DO your thing Tyler. I see you making films like Narnia or other with blacks in lead roles. I would like to see black movies change period to movies like Titanic aith black main characters and nothing said about it being a black movie, its just a movie period. That’s what I like about Will and Jada Smith- they dont let color strongholds keep them from putting a black child in the lead in Karate Kid or Anne. Love that. Is it me because I think Tyler is hot, always have, dont care about the abuse, because the abuse isnt him.
