Tyler Perry is adding another series to his TBS belt with ‘For Better or Worse‘. The show will follow the ups-and-downs of married life for Marcus and Angela, two characters who originated in the feature films ‘Why Did I Get Married‘ and ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?

Actor Michael Jai White and actress Tasha Smith are set to reprise the roles of television anchor Marcus and salon owner Angela. Additional cast members will be announced in the upcoming months and the show is set to start taping on Tyler Perry studios in ATL this Summer.

TRACEE ELLIS ROSS + MALCOLM JAMAL WARNER TO STAR IN NEW BET SERIES

Tracee Ellis Ross, who starred in the former CW comedy “Girlfriends,” will star in a new comedy for BET that will increase the network’s move into original scripted programming.

The new comedy, “Reed Between the Lines,” will feature Ross as a psychologist adept in her job but more frazzled when dealing with her family. Malcolm-Jamal Warner will costar as her husband, an English teacher.

The series, scheduled to air in October, will join “The Game” and “Let’s Stay Together,” the popular comedies which have both been renewed.

kudos to tyler perry- people can say what they want but he keeps black actors employed in main roles (not just the loud sista girl or the funny dude)

I will be watching as long as it does not involve the kind of over-acting like his other show “Meet the Browns”. If it’s a quality show with quality acting and up-to-par writing, then i will definitely be watching.

Always happy to support positive endeavors especially involving black actors! :)

I def want to watch the Tyler Perry show! The BET one I’m not sure, but will give it a try bcuz our black actors & actresses need to get paid !!

  3. Diamond Latrelle

Yes…I’ll watch to see if I’m interested in becoming a regular viewer of these programs. Its good to see that BET is stepping it up with the original scripted series with more African-Americans cast in them.

  4. Jordan

I LOVE Marcus and Angela ! I will be watching that!

  5. Peace At Heart

praying they won’t be loud and ugly acting toward each other *crossing fingers*, but won’t hold my breath

  6. Ghana Princess

I am SO watching Marcus and Angela, can’t wait!!!

  7. Ghana Princess

Cant wait to see the Marcus and Angela sitcom!!

  8. Ricky

An English teacher and a psychologist? I like it already!

  9. Britt

Yes I will watch both of them sound good!!!

  10. Be Original

I’ll check them out. Tasha Smith is so raw in that role and it cracks me up. We’ll have to see if they can pull off an entire series centered around their craziness.

  11. Candice

Great post! The show should be interesting when it comes out. Hopefully! http://www.celebvixen.com

  12. casting

This is not true! They are casting her role as we speak. you are gonna make it very difficult for the actors that actually get the role, because they will be expecting Tasha and Mike.

  13. casting

it’s based on their characters, not staring them.

Honestly I am feeling like the Black sit-com is very played out, and would love a branch out to thrillers like LOST and serious shows like The Wire. I’m always suspicious cause I think it is easy for the sitcoms to turn into neo-Black exploitation. The Tyler Perry series…I remember that couple from the first movie and they were dysfunctional. I hope they won’t just reinforce dysfunctional Black couple issues and I second Peace At Heart’s comment and hope they won’t be loud and ugly acting toward each other. I mostly stick to Netflix and Hulu but (even though I am pessimistic) I would give it a try if the shows are available there.

I agree with you to an extent about black sitcoms and how you rarely will see black directors diversify into various genres of TV drama. But I think that there has to be an understanding that mainstream Hollywood really doesn’t know anything about the black audience and how unique and broad are tastes are (i.e. Black directors not getting the funding for their tv passion projects). (Regardless of the fact I’m a fan of Tyler Perry) he did something beyond what most directors and producers do, and that is he took Ownership of everything (which alot of mainstream directors and producers have done or are doing) and he refused to use the Hollywood Formula of creating his works. If you notice alot of the serious movers and shakers in Hollywood have done something unique or totally different to make themselves standout (and it has paid handsomely). You may not agree with me but Tyler Perry is encouraging a meeting of the creative minds, he started his studio not only to make his films but also to help others make their films. For all we know he could be helping the next (Black) Jerry Bruckheimer and Dick Wolf. He’s going to stick with his style but I doubt he’s going to deny someone the chance to create something like CSI or Blue Bloods (as long as it’s lucrative of course, studios arent cheap to run). But thats just my theory. And I will say that Tyler Perry has shown some maturity (i.e. The Family that Preys and For Colored Girls) we obviously see his potential and who knows this show may be more of a drama than a sitcom. But we will see.

Now I’ve seen both Why Did I Get Married films and noted that even thought Marcus and Angela were in good standing at the end of part 1, Nothing really changed when we see part 2. And I think that Tyler Perry should have at LEAST shown some consistency.

  15. sck

Angel! Report more on Tracee. I love me some Tracee and I know you do too!

    Thank you

  16. Chill_Out

I’m anxious. I feel that Tyler Perry has matured with his work from the like of The Family That Preys and recently For Colored Girls. I really would like for this to be more of a drama than a sitcom, he really should diversify. But knowing the kind of stuff that’s already on TBS I’m not keeping my hopes up.

And I’m excited for the BET show starring Tracee Ellis Ross and Malcolm Jamal Warner. They are both very talented actors, and knowing the quality of work they’ve done I already know they would sign up for a well written script. I’m ready to see that.

  17. Keezy

Sorry but I think I’ll stick to watching Malcolm-Jamal Warner on Community.

    Hey Concreteloop,
Sadly, you guys are wrong here. They will not be reprising their roles on this show. For better or worse is a pilot shooting soon. They are actually auditioning now as we speak for the lead actors based off the characters from the feature film. For example: Are we there yet (there is no Nia Long but Essence Atkins)…ect

    Sadly,
The last amazing black sitcom goes to Everybody hates Christ…these new black sitcoms are keeping our actors employed..but they are from other notable sydicated shows…Hollywood is recycling these same actors (Essence -Smart Guy, Tia Mowry-Sister,Sister, Wendy Raquel Welch-Steve Harvey Show, Ect…my list could go on

Back in the 80′s & 90′s sitcoms had unknown talented actors w/ 1 main notable lead talent like Queen Latifah (living single), Will Smith (Fresh Prince), Jamie Foxx (Self-titled), Martin…ect…they became well known for those characters and the scripts were really funny…nowdays…if you are an up & coming black talent…you’ll be lucky to get a featured extra role….

    • EmmaV's Great-Grandaughter

Well Essence, Tia and Wendy got to work, just like everybody else. Do you expect them to sit at home and wait for hollywood to give them a job? I’m not mad at recycled actors like Tia Mowry, Essence Akins, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Raven-Symone, Keisha Knight-Pulliam, Regina King, Tatyanna Ali and so many others getting work on new tv shows. Also some of the people that I mentioned are still getting royalties from their old shows that made them famous in the first place. There is a show called Let’s Stay Together on BET and they have two new actos on the show and 3 recycled actors. But it would be nice to see new black actors working and becoming big stars.

  19. CJ phara

Typo …everybody hates Chris…not Christ…sorry unless your Lady Nah Nah…yuck

  20. Jerry

Love that Tyler is doing this show! But does that mean there will not be a part 3 for why did I get married? Also I think Malcolm Jamal should have been casted as a best friend or something but oh well.

  21. tammy

TYLER INTERVIEW WITH MONIQUE WAS VERY GOOD LAST NIGHT. I LIKE HIM MORE THAN BEFORE. SPIKE YOU OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED. MEET WITH THE MAN. HE MAY CAN OPEN DOORS YOU HAVE BURNED DOWN.

  22. EmmaV's Great-Grandaughter

I can’t wait to see theses shows.

  23. THECONCRETELOOPIST

Dear: Michael Jai White, please come put your hands all over me!!! Jeesh!!!!

  24. mizz2010

I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! As a black female aspiring actress it does my heart good to see more of us on the silver screen. I agree that we could have more diversity as far as plots but right now with the state of Hollywood, especially Black Hollywood I’m just glad that black actors are getting their foot in the door. thanks to tyler perry and others once we set the stage, then we can begin to expand in our genres. And 3 more snaps for the fact that these shows are showing black families especially black marriage which is what our culture needs to see again on tv to remind us that it’s still out there!

Tyler Perry said something very profound on George Lopez. “When all of the doors closed in my face, I did not look for a break from someone, but looked up to God” Thank you Tyler for bringing your wisdom, and talent to Black Hollywood, and people who love watching your movies, and plays.
