Early Wednesday afternoon Concrete Loop was invited to an exclusive listening party for Beyoncé’s upcoming album, 4. Along with 10+ of her devoted SUPERfans, we had the chance to meet the star, who sat down with her during the 5 song preview. We also viewed the video twice.
Although cell phones and cameras were confiscated during the listening/viewing sessions, we were only able to make note of previewed songs as Beyoncé intimately explained each song to in the room. Among those in attendance: Jason, editor of Beyonceworld.net, who was flown in from Australia. There were also super fans Shykeem Smith (who Beyonce said helped named the new album) and Jamal Walker (who thought he was dreaming when she walked in). Unfortunately, Beyonce’s staff asked that we not disclose any of the song titles (insert your awws here), but we’ve decided to go ahead and give you a little description of the songs that were heard as well as quotes from Ms. Beyonce herself.
Song 1. The song is very mid-tempo. Vocally loud on most of the songs. Many of the Beyonce fans in attendance knew this song by heart because a snippet was released earlier this year. Beyonce stated that this was her nephew Julez favorite track and that it was heavily inspired by Fela Kuti while creating the song. (4/5)
Song 2. The second song they played for us was another mid-tempo ballad. In the track Beyonce sings, “You don’t deserve my tears,” “Thank God you blew it,” “Sucks to be you right now” and more. Reminded us of “Irreplaceable” with the song content but overall the song was good. Beyonce said BabyFace wrote the track for her and told CL exclusively that she was“very emotional in the studio while recording”. (3/5)
Song 3. The third song they played us was another ballad ish song. Very moody and dark with hints of rock and soul. There was one part of the song that the guitar would play and she would copy the melody with her voice. Loved that part. Beyonce said she worked with songwriter Jeff Bhasker on the track and was inspired by all the rock concerts she attended last summer. (4/5)
Song 4. This song was very interesting to us. Beyonce said herself that she felt like a mad scientist in the studio while recording this track and it was like 6 songs into one. The song starts off slow and then goes into a reggae vibe. Very electronic and has a dancing beat. Great for the summer time and everyone in the room was moving to the beat including Beyonce. Beyonce said that Jay-Z liked the track. (5/5)
Song 5. This emotional track was by far the best song out of the 5 we heard. Beyonce sings about her love and says, “Don’t know much about guns but I’ve been shot by you.” Vocally strong and we could tell Beyonce was attached to it. When the song played, I saw Beyonce tearing up and she put her head down for the rest of the track. CL asked her if how she is in the studio during recording ballads because her emotion sticks out on the song and she said sometimes she gets lost in it. (5/5)
OUR NOTES WHILE WATCHING THE “RUN THE WORLD (GIRLS) VIDEO
They say we are the first to watch the “Run The World (Girls)” video. (Her fans start to get excited) Video starts. Beyonce walks on, she’s on a car dancing about. (Fans are hyperventilating. LOL.) There is a Lion that walks up to her and she pets it. The dancing in the video is dope, she is going in. She moves her shoulders to the beat in a feather bolero. Beyonce sticks up her middle finger in the video but it’s blurred out. Actor Collins Pennie is co-starring in the video. Beyonce holding two hyenas on leashes. She is kicking up dirt and dancing with her army of girls. Beyonce does some type of aerobatic move in the dirt; rolling around real expressively. Overall, the video was hot and adds to the song. yep there were Hyenas in the video. She had them on leashes. Not sure if we can say Video of the Year with so many more months left in the year but the video definitely takes the song to the next level.
@ Angel, respectfully, that’s been my main problem with Beyonce-her music itself has been tepid (IMO), but her videos/image are so hot I end up feeling it. To me, that speaks less of her musicianship and more to her physical attractiveness. You gave other songs good reviews, but I’ve heard from some sources that the tracks were cool, and other sources say the tracks were pretty whack. I trust CL, so I still may give the album a shot. But, I’m quite apprehensive. Quite!
Song #4 sampled Boys II Men, that might some real R&B sh!t because she was inspired by 90′s R&B, right? Also song #1, titled by the fans ‘Never Let You Go/Til The End Of The Time’ is IMMENSE! I would have given 5 stars just from the preview on youtube, the drums are so intense and the horns reminescent of Fela Kuti, while the vocal arrangements of Michael Jackson! Oh Beyoncé!!! Cant wait for the video! VEVO said its released on friday at 12.pm!!!
And the fan only by himself didnt help, child please, I mean, we all came with the idea of “ROUND IV” because we thought “Round” since the album was about to punch and “4″ was the fourth album, Beyoncé was born september 4, Tina, january 4, & Jay, december 4, julez in 2004 & solange, june 24. She was married april 4 and even got a tattoo “IV” on her finger where she wears her wedding ring, Jay has the same and that’s one of the reasons they allow themselves not wearing their rings. We had plenty of videos on youtube named ‘ROUND IV’ since last year! Some fans, including him had the chance to tell her about that personnally, that is all.
Beyonce said that to him directly that what he said inspired to name the album, 4. But i’m sure it was collective.

Sounds solid by the descriptions. I just hope the album is fluid, that’s my only complaint with her ’cause her albums are never any good, but some of the singles of course are. I hate that she openly admits to recording an excess of songs then picking the best for an album, it always shows with each end project. This review was downright laughable. I mean the way CL tries to play up the artist and her songs like its the biggest thing that’s about to drop. I’ve heard the first single and not impressed thus far. I think the review should have been done by a certified music critique instead of some bloggers who are trying to get notariety for their site. OMG! The proof is in the pudding and I will wait for the pudding to fall in my lap to see what the hype is about and if it’s really worth it.

Nevertheless, still anticipating the album because I have to hear what Ms. Carter has in store for her die hard stans and mixed fans.
I don’t know about most people, but I like to wait for the artist to release their end product before making comments about their end product. Based off the trailer, it looks interesting and very eye catching.There are clips of her on the trailer that is showing her in ways most of us have never seen.

Angel, Is this your honest review??… By the songs that you heard do you think that this can be classified as one of her GREATS/CLASSIC… I’m very excited about this era… RTW in my opinion is different, especially from whats being played on the radio now; AND THE VIDEO IS REALLY A VIDEOOO, simply amazing(from teaser)… Bey’s career has been pretty much flawless, so she has room to play… Even if she is’nt as sucessful this time around IT WILL NEVERRR BE OVER FOR BEYONCE… LETS NOT GET DELUSIONAL SHE’S ONE OF A KIND…
This is an honest review or I wouldn’t have put it up. Everything up there is what is on my paper. As for the album being a classic, I’m not sure we can say that after only hearing 5 songs. However, the 5th song I heard could definitely be classified as a classic Beyonce song. The track was amazing.
As for the video, I thought it was dope. She took her dancing to another level.
@Angel, you sound stern and honest. I believe you. I’ll wait for CL’s full review of the album (and I hope you review it!), and if it’s favorable I’ll buy it. I’m no where near a Bey Stan, but I support good music period, always.
