Early Tuesday evening, BET’s 106th & Park hosted a 2011 BET Awards Nomination Special where they announced the nominees for this year’s award ceremony. Leading the pack is Chris Brown, who has received 6 nominations: Best Male R&B Artist, Best Collaboration (for which he holds two nominations) Video of the Year, Best Actor and Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice. Lil Wayne comes in second with 5 nods. Kanye West, Rihanna and Drake all come in with 4 nominations each. Actor/funny man Kevin Hart has been chosen to be the host for the popular, televised award show:
“When we asked folks who should host this year’s BET AWARDS online, in the streets, among other celebs and throughout social media, one name came back to us loud and clear: Kevin Hart,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s president of music programming and specials.
“He is blue flame right now and we are looking forward to working with him on the show. His energy, wit and the always fantastic performances will make for yet another must see event—and the ‘Chocolate Droppa’ might even get a verse in the show.”
As far as performances go, Alicia Keys has been confirmed to hit the stage.

Whoever nominates these artists every year needs to be replaced, this is just oh too baffling and just plain don’t make sense. First of all they cant please everybody and everybody cant be nominated! To snatch a nomination, you obviously gotta have a hit or be popular/big name, excepting for the Female Hip-Hop category and if you’re Ciara. OK, so Beyoncé got nominated because she brings the ratings and they want her to perform this year, she is doing a show in Glastonbury around the same time so maybe she can’t, but they put her name out there probably to have her react or something. Also, Bey is the most nominated and most winning artist in BET and as well has the most performances. But even though Im a fan, she hasnt done anything in 2010 excepting for Why Dont You Love Me which wanst even a single! Jazmine Sullivan’s album sh!ts on every R&B album recorded by any female last year. She deserved. Some ppl mentionned Melanie Fiona but last year, she had the most nominations though! Ciara as well had a hot album even though it underperformed, I think they could have shown her a lil love like, come comfort she is still in the game for a reason.
The Hip-Hop categories! LMAO, Ok, basically even though it is funny, Nicki was about to win ANYWAY! No amount of other nominees would have changed sh!t. The female rappers need to wake up cause it’s basically a win or win situation for Nicki. If Kim, Missy, Lauryn, Eve decide to wake up, it will be competition! They could have given a nom for Kim though!

I believe “No Hands” will (should) take the collabo – as much as I hate to admit it, that song was… But whatever, I can deal with the shannigans of all the other awards, but if Marsha does not win video of the year – Her video pushed boundaries, made a very powerful point, was beautiful – I will start a boycott of BET in my hometown.

You know what, all criticism aside (and I agree with ALL THE CRITICISM), I think the message that we are trying to send to BET is that they have a fundamental flaw, that is very fixable. This is supposed to be about recognition of Black, Brown, and Urban music artists. What they could have done very successfully, was created more categories that would have allowed for more recognition. I do not know any of the Female Hip Hop artists nominees aside from Nicki Minaj – but if BET had created an “Underground/Emerging Female Hip Hop Artists” award, that would have been cool. A lot of artists who had very successful years were not recognized. Why not have a “Pop” award, an “R&B” award, an “Alternative” award, “Best song” etc.
I guess what I am trying to say is, nix the sports and movies, be a true music awards show, recognize the diversity in urban/Black music, nominate that. Then you can put the obligatory Beyonce nomination in without having to leave out someone who actually had a great year.
On a side note, Serena hasn’t payed since last July when she hurt her foot. Venus hasn’t played since January when she was hurt (and hadn’t won since last June…)

N.E.R.D released “Nothing” in 2010, so I guess the awards are for people who did stuff from 2010-up to a certain point in 2011.
