According to the ReddingNewsReview.com, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church pastor Bishop Eddie Long has settled out of court and has agreed to pay $24.8M to the four young males who accused him of sexually molesting them:
The source, who claims to be familiar with the details of the settlement and did not wish to be identified, said that Long refused to give a public apology, which ended up costing him more.
What began as a $2 million agreement to settle the case for each of the four men quickly rose to $5.5 million for the respective plaintiffs, the source said, only because Long refused to publicly admit guilt.
The men are to divide $2.2 million equally and then receive $400,000 in payments until the money is paid out over the next 20 years, the source said. The final figure comes to $22 million for the four men and $2.8 million for the plaintiffs attorneys.
Reports say his congregation and church goers are slowly depleting in number, including his former elder Rev. Bernice King. It is also said that Mr. Long has asked his church members for donations of up to $500-$1000 in an effort to expand the mega institution into the cities of Denver, CO & Birmingham, AL.
Television personality Sherri Shepard of ABC’s The View spoke on the topic earlier this week and practically bashed Bishop Eddie Long for his apparent actions of guilt

I personally feel that settlements perpetuate 1 Timothy 6:10 “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.” Justice was not served and will never be served if people continue to believe that money will correct things. If I were a “victim” I… would want Bishop Long stripped from his title so that he could never use his position or wealth to inflict that kind of pain on anyone else, thats just my opinion. Settling does nothing but maintains my victim status, because I’m allowing his money to keep him from trial and losing the title he so wrongfully abused. In summary the jerry-curl stays on the pulpit and the “alleged” victims received another gift.
I agree w/ your statement 100%. I feel as though some people would rather wait on a check than to see justice served. If I was a victim I wouldn’t want the money but rather see ther person in jail, w/ no church. I’m not saying he didn’t do it, but it is unfair to make judgements as she did. Valid point, however you negate the experience of your so-called “alleged” victims. While personally, if it were me I would fight in trial, yet these men are not you and I. How easy it is to judge…. We do not know what scrutiny these men have come under for stepping forward and revealing “scandalous” details of relationships, ethical corruption, and spiritual mis-trust. Just as members of the church and community did not believe (want to believe) the allegations, Im sure members of their own family were not in support of these men coming forward. So maybe for them accepting the money and a private apology was suffice, oppose to going before a judge releasing more details only to be further scrutinized in the media and their community.

I’m quite sure these victims were aware of the scrutiny they would receive when they decided to file charges. Anytime you sue anyone famous that’s expected. These victims may have grown tired too, but again money paid is not justice served. All that says to the person is, “i can do what I want and write a check @ the end of the day.” Sexual assault is one of the most difficult thing to recover from so I find it hard to see how a payoff can bring closure. I think if they went for a criminal case as opposed to a civil case their character will not be questioned. Again I’m not judging but I’m giving an opinion and if what these victims went through did happen I hope they do find peace. I only have these questions because I know people who have through similar situations and take offense to people who take hush money without taking criminal charges as well.

I’ve attended his church plenty of times. When he is preaching the congregation comes to the altar and puts money on it. When it time for tithes and offerings. His elder says to the congregation that there are 2 offerings, and there is a “love Offering” (which is towards the bishop and his family, becuase he doesnt make a salary as a preacher. Also he has a publishing contract, which allows him to write and publish books, Cds, videos and other forms of messages. He also has a private school on his church property for the members to send there kids to school. its called New Birth Academy. Also he has a bank for his church members too. This is how he makes his mony. I will not be surprised if he is not banking in 80 million by now.
I can understand that if you want to get on with your life that you would settle out of court. But I would want to make an example out of everyone trying to say I “touched them” or whatever by enduring a lenghty court process. I Feel that the fact that this is out in the open that he doesn’t need a public apology. If so, then these male victims need to have their names and faces posted so that we know exactly who he is apologizing to…And the fact that the “victims” took a money settlement instead of a public apology means they just wanted money. Besides, under Georgia law, where the crimes occured, all the “victims” were at the age that the state of Georgia deems consenting…

Attorney’s fees and costs alone are ridiculous (I’m a first year attorney and my billing rate is $225/hour. If i spend 2 minutes reading an email on your behalf (from anyone) that costs you $22.50.). So legal fees alone are a killer, especially on a case that could be as epic as this. Further, the more this drags out, the more it hurts his image, his future ability to raise funds, etc.

I’m a member of New Birth and I’m neither brainwashed or dumb. It bothers me that people like you can make judgments on members of his congregation, all 25k of them that you don’t know. It’s also foolish of you to think that we somehow could know that this man was capable of such a horrible act or even that we condone his “alleged” behavior. As if to say we are aware of what he does when he goes home at night., before he is a Pastor he is a MAN first which makes him human like everybody else. I joined NB in 2008 because I felt a connection to Bishop Eddie Long not because he brainwashed me into doing so and I enjoyed the church while I attended it. He does a lot a good for people, the church helps many people. Sadly, the respect I had for the Bishop has dwindled; I haven’t been back to the church since the allegations.

I’ve been touched as a child, so I know how hard it is to tell. Than for them to have to be in public eye is even more worst. To have to sit in a courtroom full of strangers and be made to look like you wanted. To have them look up all your business for the world to know. To relive what you went though all over again is hard. Sometimes as a surviver its a point were you do have to move on. This would have let all the world know their business. Their faces on TV, it’s hard for men to even say they were touch, and now they will be looked as other than who they are.

To clarify…People have seen their faces on tv. One in particular did an interview with a local Fox 5 reporter in Atlanta- it can probably be located on youtube. And another did an interview with the local ABC affiliate WSB Channel 2. And they showed the pictures of the other 2- all names were released.

Please folks, let’s NOT compare Eddie Long to Michael Jackson!!! Michael was a corporation when he was accused and he was forced to settle, everyone knows this. Michael unlike Eddie, got on National TV and proclaimed his innocence to the world, it was a global event. He said he was innocent unlike Longfellow here.
He also went along with the police and allowed them to take photos of him naked to prove he wasn’t innocent. Finally, confusion has set in. I understand what supposedly happened with Bishop Long and those 4 men, but why is Sheri Sheppherd (or whatever her name is) so upset? She’s angry at Bishop Long because she is a single parent raising a son and she can’t teach him right from wrong, or good vs evil, or anything good without the help of others? Now of all the things which the Bishop may have done, I don’t think creating children with Ms. Shepherd was one of them.
Her point is that a single woman can teach all day long, but you also want a balance of having a positive male figure in your son’s life to help raise him because the father is not there fufilling that role. So, many single mothers feel safe to let their son’s, and may even feel like it was help from God, have a relationship with a pastor like Long that encouraged they would help guide boys. And Eddie Long, being the coward he is, preyed upon that. He knew he did not have those boys fathers to deal with so he made himself out to be a safe place for the single mothers to bring their fatherless sons to have that positive male influence. And to find out he took advantage and preyed upon these well meaning mothers is cowardess, like most molestors are. If he was so called treating them like his own kids, then where was his own kids during these travels? If his own kids could not come, then nobody’s child should come, but he taking them on trips alone and sharing rooms with them and his own kids no where. He even admitted giving the one guy a drug, for what dude? He is too cocky to admit it as he was too cocky to hand over the books for examination as requested by that senator, when you are suppose to give to Ceasar what is his and avoid the appearance of evil. I always knew Eddie Long was a crook. Never set right in my vibe toward him, he seemed too flamboyant and cocky to be a humbled man of God. He mostly played up verses and using rhetoric to make himself appear spiritual as if he was receiving divine revelation. Can someone please tell me what happened to the passage in Scripture which says “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God?” Bishop Long, while and a public figure, is no different from any other person on the face of the Earth. When God says that we all have come short of His glory, Bishop Long is included. I think it ridiculous how when someone in the public eye does something wrong, everyone is so upset and angry about their indsicretion. Who are these people, anyway? They are ordinary people whose job puts them in the limelight. They have faults and shortcomings, just as we all have. Not one person on the face of this earth is perfect; truth be told, we all have either said or done something in our lives that we are ashamed of and don’t want anyone else to know about (the proverbial “skeleton in the closet”). When we do wrong, we look to people and to God for forgiveness. Why, then are we so quick to condemn someone else for their indiscretions when we have made mistakes ourselves? We may not have done what Bishop Long is alleged to have done, but sin is sin, regardless of what form it takes.

I will ask you: what did Jesus do, after being lied on, falsely accused, spit on, lashed 39 times, a crown of thorns placed on His head, made to carry a heavy wooden cross, and nailed to said cross? He looked down at His accusers and tormentors and said “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” If the allegations against Bishop Long are true and he goes to God and asks for forgiveness (and his heart is right), God will forgive him and give him a second chance. Have we so quickly forgotten Pastor Jim Baker and Pastor Jimmy Swaggart? Didn’t they sin and do wrong? Has God forgiven them? Are they still preaching? Let us be mindful of our own walk with God, and leave the judging of Bishop Long to the only One who has the right to pass judgement.

Yes all have sinned and come short….But for us that have claimed redemption and walk in the newness of life – has been washed, set free and have put off that old life. The attributes of Bishop is clearly laid out in the Word. As a leader of a flock you have to be pretty transparent – for the congregation…in Mr. Long’s case the Holy Spirit is now revealing all his business to bring him to confess and repent. I was always suspicious of him as he seamed to be flashy and wearing rings on every finger etc. I had never seen any man of god flash material things in such a manor. This goes to show that these ministers are human and subject to the same problems. We had a local minister from a fairly large church also go down from something similar.

I disagree with Sherri Shepard comments…its not the church’s responsibility to raise your son and or children. If a child grows up without a father, then they just don’t have any male figure in their life. The church is there to support and help pray for single woman so that God can intervene and be their heavenly father. Matthew 23:9 says And call no man your father upon the earth, for one is your father which is in heaven. By the way, this doesnt mean your biological father, of course one would address hin as (dad or father), and none else. Also, if I was one of those young boys involve in the case I would not have accepted hush money? Because that doesn’t solve anything…Bishop Long is still walking around a free man and pastor of a church?!! I think that money always seems to be the deciding factor, but whatever happen to what the Bible says about Bishops…we need to start thinking about our actions and how it is affecting lots of people especially believers. I think we have gotten away with from the word and we are not praying and asking the God to fix the situation. We should always be praying for spiritual discernment.
