Nearly one year after it was made known that Jennifer Hudson would star in a biopic based on the life of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the 2nd former wife of activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela, addressed her lack of support for the completed film. In an interview with CNN, the 74 year-old called the filmed biopic ‘disrespectful’ and ‘an insult’:

“I have absolutely nothing against Jennifer, but I have everything against the movie itself. I was not consulted. I am still alive. I think that it is total disrespect to come to South Africa, make a movie about my struggle and call that movie some translation of a romantic life of Winnie Mandela. I think it is an insult. I don’t know what would be romantic in our struggle.”
The former First Lady went on to say that there is no way someone can just know the emotions and thoughts of what she experienced during the time of civil and social inequality.

all I can say is Wow!
its crazy they completely left her out…and doing it all for the money..so they do owe her something..atleast a consult would do..
…They already sending out Free test models of iPad 2..but ONLY if you live in United States..i got 2..sent 1 to my mom house & 1 to my dorm..lol http://goo.gl/OUEXN

that means proper research wasn’t done for the film and its gotta b half garbish thats why im very picky about paying my ten dollar ..that add up by the way to see films..
Wow is right…Damn
I dnt think ppl know who winnie really is and the amount of evil sh*t she did. I am sure the reason the directors didnt want Jeniifer to contact winnie is becuz they dnt want her to tint her mind. Of course winnie dont want to be play is the evil person everyone know she is. They wan Jennifer to play her as she really is, and not as winnie want herself to be precieved
She is absolutely right! It all boils down to dollars and cents.
Strong words. I understand her view. She’s is still alive. Out of respect, they could have consulted her. But then again, she might just want Money.
But why wouldn’t she? That’s someone making a movie of your trials and tribulations using your name and just making up the feelings that you actully had to experience first hand.
I agree Allen- it’s funny how in America we hold capitalistic ideals as paramount…till we want to screw someone else
The woman is rich enough, its not about money, Im schoked they make a movie about her without consulting her though
Even if she did “JUST WANT MONEY,” they will be making money off HER story, HER experience, HER LIFE….So wouldn’t that be owed to her…rightfully so? Secondly, since she is not in support of the film, Im sure money is not a concern of hers, it appears that she is more concerned about the integrity of life being correctly depicted.
2ND FORMER WIFE??? WINNIE MANDELA IS NELSON MANDELA FIRST WIFE…THEY WERE MARRIED DURING HIS WHOLE PRISON LIFE AND DIVORCED SHORTLY AFTER HE WAS RELEASED
WRONG! His first wife was Evelyn Mase.
lol @ WRONG
OH REALLY…OK I’M WOMAN ENOUGH TO TAKE THAT “L”
I doubt it’s about money. Imagine someone making a movie about the worse time in your life, sugarcoating the real facts with a love story and you are still alive and they couldn’t even ask you! Not to mention, they filmed in South Africa. She could have been on the set the whole time assisting the director, editor and J.Hud. That’s a damn shame!
I never really agree with you but this is the TRUTH!!!!!!
agreed!
Well with all this said; is it safe 2 say this isn’t a biopic?
I guess it is a bit rude. And the woman should be entitled to have a say in something that has to do with her life. But I wonder if the issue about her being involved with the killing of that young boy has something to do with the snub? Either way it was going to be a sticky situation if they did consult her for advice or input.
I absolutely agree.
I absolutely agree, does jHud or anyone else really understand the plight of those people our people.
I did not even watch her perform on GMA. And she need to come clean about the weight loss. “Points Plus” yea right What did she do before “Points Plus” and I wonder how she going to sugar coat her book.Let me tell you all Jhud come straight from the hood and she is NOT a saint and out of respect she should have consulted with Ms.Mandela. She has an Oscar and she could have said look I will not do it w out speaking w her.
I quarantee you she would have given Oprah the respect.
She is NOT going to play Aretha.
It was about money for Jhud, like the book about her family is about money.
I can talk because I did not buy her album and not going to see this movie.
You are right Ms.Mandela is not going concerned about money she has made it all this time w out hollywoods money. This is white folk in America mess and Jhud caught up in it.Playing like she don’t know.
They should have consulted her out of respect i mean the movie is about her :/
I definitely agree!!!
I agree with Winnie. Why not sue them, I don’t think any one else would let that happen. Of all people I thought jenifer would talk to her to get more insight . Shame
What I want to know is why did she wait until the movie was done to say something. I’m sure she heard about them planning to make the movie months and months ago. Why now?
So that the movie bombs even more than we expect it to and they end up loosing instead of making any money….
The subject of a movie not supporting the movie ESPECIALLY in this kind of situation will make the public think twice about spending their hard earned dollars to see it…
As you can clearly read, the woman was not consulted for anything. They probably only showed her the final result. Even if she had details on a project about her, why would she be the one who is going to approach them anyway for advices and such? They are the ppl making a movie about her life, she is 74 and a former first lady, she is a legend, if you make a movie about me, talk to me, I wont ask for a meeting in your office. It makes no sense that it is her that had to approach them.
She did. when they announced Jhud got the role, she spoke out. It’s completely disreceptful. I won’t watch it.
@ GETEM She spoke out about it when the movie was announced saying she was not happy about the movie in general and the casting. She has been adamant from the get go that she hates this movie so please this is nothing new its just highlighted now for publicity for the movie
Total disrespect. How can you even call it a biopic? I won’t be supporting this film… sorry. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Hollywood rape…
Dreamgirls was not that great, and Jhud is not a good actress. As fa as Oscar goes. That Oscar belonged to Diana Ross for Lady Sings the Blues and Angela Bassett for Tina Turner.
And that make up she looks like one of the klumps. Not supporting her or this movie she is a sell out!!!!

Dreamgirls was GREAT. One of the best musicals and movies with an all black cast. However I agree that J-Hud’s acting is overrated, in Dreamgirls, she did what every black woman could do in a movie, she only got the voice to match the role.
This is so rude, how do you a do a movie based on someone’s life and not even consult the person in question? Is this normal practice and Winnie is the first person to really voice her concerns or is this specific project just being inconsiderate? Makes me sad….
I agree with her. Now I have second doubts about seeing this movie. That is complete disrespect. Atleast Jennifer could have tried to make some contact. If she didn’t.
Jennifer has become a robot….if im portraying someone in a “Biopic” if it is at all possible I would want to try and gain access to them! DUHHHHH!!!! She should have known better beyond the producers and writers!!! Im disappointed and totally agree with Winnie!!
It would have made total sense for jhud, if she was true to her craft, to do in depth backgeound on the role (meet with Winnie). Jamie Fox did it for Ray and said it was key to his portrayal. This shows an actor’s authenticity or lack there of.
this is that summer heat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBc_sDb5Kjs
Did the producers etc think they could get away with what they did when she’s still alive? DUMB MOVE
cry me a river, not the first nor last time someone won’t be consulted about a movie based on their life.
gimme some names… last time I checked, all the ppl who had biopics were consulted or at least their family on their behalf…
Emily won’t give you a response. She knows she was talking out the side of her mouth with that statement.
It is a shame that the person in question was not consulted at all, even though she is still alive. Whenever a true biopic is created, the person who is the topic, or the family of the individual is consulted. This makes it seem that this movie will be a work of fiction moreso than a biopic.
SMH. People are getting way too greedy. Wouldn’t it have been better if they included Winnie in the representation of HER life? After all the film is supposed to be about HER.
Don’t suport the film make; your voice heard the hard way
@ Talk….its easy to say that when its not about you. Let someone make a movie about my life…put my personal feelings and thoughts on film where millions and millions of people will view it and watch what would happen. This was very disrespectful…..its all about money and greed. I will not see or support this film!
because they didn’t want to tell the true story just a watered down fictionized version… the truth might not sit well… Hollywood pulled another ‘social network’ on someone… jen could have called the lady up herslf…actors can do that…smh… very disappointing
I think they should scrap the movie. Why would you make a movie about someone, and not tell them or get their approval?
Not to mention the fact that TERRENCE HOWARD, of all people plays Nelson Madela. The casting director should be shot.
Lmao actually The Creative Workers Union of South Africa have opposed the choices of characters, stating they will push for a moratorium on the film if the casting was not reversed, that was when they announced the biopic, wondering what are they gon do now
ETTA got mad at Bey for the same thing…it is an insult not to inform or at least study the real character when doing these types of films…UGH REAL ACTORS understand and know too do this, so they can be A1 at the script while not offending the character, for example JAmie FOX spent time with RAY charles before death and thats why its the only movie or time when I didn’t see him as WANDA ! smhlol but there are many actors know this is a critical factor when perfecting the craft of being considered a REAL ACTOR! not because of a singing competition movie and you get to win a freaking oscar!
Etta James was consulted before tha film and got payed MAJOR MONEY becuase they didnt only use her life, but her music as well in the movie! She said that she was very happy that it was Beyoncé who played her and after the movie, she was pleased. Etta also met other actors like Adrian Brody, they studied her life and the movie wasnt a biopic about etta, it was cadillac records and its artists. Diana Ross for dreamgirls on the other hand wasnt consulted because it was not a biopic but was inspired by the supremes, the original play was in the 80′s and they truned it into a movie so Diana couldnt anyway be mad at anybody.
I SAID SHE DID NOT STUDY ETTA MEANING….SHE DID NOT SPEND TIME WITH HER PERSONALLY TO GET THE REAL STORY AND KNOW THE REAL CHARACTER….AGAIN WHICH IS WHY LOW KEY…WE ALL SAW HOW SHE REALLY FELT OKAY>>SHE DIDN”T really seem impressed at ALL!…GEESH…um I USED JAMIE AS AN EXAMPLE..BUT I FEEL LIKE IM RESPONding TO A SIX GRADEr TRYING TO DEFEND SOMETHING THAT IS CLEARLY TRUE!
#its okay don’t pop a nerve sweetie! SMHLOL
No you didnt say that, you said Etta was mad about Beyoncé for the same concern, the main concern of Ms Mandela is that she wasnt even consulted while she was still alive, MS Mandela didnt ask for jen to spend her life with her, she just asked for her opinion to be heard, that’s why she was mad NOT AT JENNIFER but at the movie while concerning Cadillac records, Etta was consulted and helped them build the movie, cadillac records was not life-based 100%, for example, the love scenes with Etta and Leonard were fictions but Etta knew about it and gave her approval. Did you forget that the movie was not about Etta? Etta had parts in the movie were she was only singing and high on drugs. Beyoncé did that well, all she had to do was studying Etta’s performances. She was given advices personally by Etta which means they both got involved; hence why her singing and performances styles changed and once again, before assuming, google Etta’s opinion about the movie, she was not expecting Beyoncé to pull it off because she said Beyoncé is bourgeois and she is raw, but she was pleased and felt honored about Beyoncé playing her. Beyoncé did spent time and learned in a drug center with drug addicts to understand better and she didnt have to, it was only one scene. Etta herself, didnt want to talk about that past of her. So these are two different cases and have nothing to do with each other. And if you are refering to Etta being “mad”, it was about Beyoncé sining at last at the inauguration, she even insulted the president, it had nothing to do with the movie.
If you look back at this woman’s life, there is nothing romantic about it, furthermore, she was a straight gangsta and convicted numerous times, she had a more painful journey than her husband should I say. The directors wanted to focus on ‘a love life’ which I can understand but reality is, with all she has been through, she dont want sh!t to be sugarcoated nd there was nothing to sugarcoat anyway, one of the reasons of the divorce was that she cheated while he was in prison as well; so I CAN UNDERSTAND HER, how she thinks its rude, that’s her life.
wow not only does J.HUD LOOSES COOL POINTS AND RESPECT but the whole movie within itself is an epic fail…because #1 they cant say its based off a true story because they havent gone to the real source for the truth and secondly its about a woman that wasnt even offered the oppurtunity to approve of anything they based the movie off of. smdh. how stupid…JHUD REALLY MA???
Why does J Hud look like she’s starring in The Klumps visit Winnie Mandela? That makeup looks terrible. Shame on them for disrespecting Mrs. Mandela.
ROTFL I THOUGHT THE SAME!
hollywood is only about the money they dont care if its an accurate portrayal or not. how can you not consult the woman whom the movie’s about? talk about a slap in the face…
Hollywood feel they can get away with anything…..so long as there’s money to be made. Shame on them for this one, and shame on J.Hud…..girl you had me going for a second that you were different from the rest of these girls. But i guess at the end of the day, its all about money huh? GTFOH!!! This is one customer who will not be watching this mess. Well i hope if you ever get the opportunity to play Aretha Franklin you wont screw that up too booboo. A Mess!!
I refuse to even support this film now. While when i first learned that Jennifer Hudson would be playing the iconic Winnie Mandela I was excited about her story being told. However, to watch Winnie in her own words say that she was not even consulted IS disrespectful. Obviously, Hollywood will do what they have always done, and shape history how they see fit. The sad thing is, people will watch the movie and accept it as truth, as with every other movie and/or image fed to people.
I’m a fan of JHud and since she played in Dreamgirls with Bey I realized she can act. But in my opinion since what happened to her and family, it seems she’s just not that in touch with another person’s feelings yet. She seems to still be within herself and not ready to be at the place where she could have imagined herself in the place of Minnie and think of her struggle/burdens and then contact her b/c of that. JHud appears to still be in the healing process of what happened to her and needs to take time to step back from this movie thing. In a little while longer she will be strong enough to imagine herself in the shoes of someone else’s life who’ve been through heavy situations like Minnie Mandela…But the Director and producers of the movie to me are responsible and 100% disrespectful for not consulting Minnie.
Girl who is Minnie? And Jennifer Hudson agreed to play a biopic and got payed for that, knowing that the woman wouldnt be consulted, she wanting a role to get some shine again in hollywood.
I’m a fan too JHUD FAN. It’s funny how folks are jumping on the “we hate Jennifer Hudson” bandwagon. If this were Bey they would be in total defense of her. Jennifer is a wonderful actress and I’m sure she will do this part justice with or without Winnie Mandela. The woman was straight vigilante for a good minute and if we did our research we’d see why some possibly didnt want to “consult” her. Just sayin’….
@Musicfan2 regardless of her convictions and allegations a biopic was made about her story, as many have stated, she is alive and to tell HERstory without consulting her makes the film a work of fiction with possible “sprinklings” of truth…For me it’s not about not supporting Jennifer, rather than respecting Winnie, and growing tired of Hollywood’s “God Complex” in their thinking they can re-create history.
Well…it sucks but I absolutley agree with first Lady Mandela. I blame J. Hud’s manegement, however, for not instructing her to consult with the First Lady. It’s easy to blame J. Hud, but she is new to acting. Her management and even the director of the movie knows much better, I’m sure. You cannot just go in and try to tell someone’s life story without knowing them at all. It would be more understandable if First Lady Mandela were dead, but she’s not. SMH at this failure. We have got to do better.
Not only she is alive, but they come to south africa where is lives and they ignore her.
I’m with you on this Winnie America got all saturated with nonsense they think they can come to Africa and make a killing. I’ll give it 15 yrs and all eyes will be on Africa! Thanks to Winnie & the likes for paving the way – no oscars needed.
SMH
I will not support that movie. I still think that a SA actor should have been hired to play Winnie Mandela. I do not want to believe that there is no talented black female actors in SA.
Very disappointed by the lack of respect towards her. Love J-Hud but I cannot support that movie. The make- up on J-Hud looks horrible. I do not even want to hear her with an SA accent.
i’m definitely NOT going to see the movie and I will tell others about it…maybe even protest at the premiere of the movie. This is wrong and very disrespectful towards Winnie. Did they really think they were going to get away with it?? Why didn’t J. Hud consult with her for the role??
That’s an awful make-up job. I can see why she’s angry, but she’s no saint, she should be glad.
Jenifer u loose points for this!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dogggggggg this is a pet peeve of mine!!! The word LOSE, which you meant to use, only has ONE “o”. LOOSE means: not fitting closely or tightly (i.e. loose jeans). **And this concludes today’s English lesson.
I feel Winnie, I completeley get her being South Afrcian myself. Its about respect. They should have asked her for permission, its her life, thy didnt know what she went through all those years when Nelson was in jail. I dont think they get what the struggle means to us. The worse thing is that they were filming in our own backyard. Total disrespect. Its not about money, its about respect and trivialising our struggle and our leaders.
I am a Black South African female, and from this end of the world i can not explain the amount of anger and digust i have towards this film. And to all those whom are not aware of the events leading to the production of the film. The South African community had been up in arms about the making of this film from the onset, yet the Hollywood money muscle overlooked these outcries. I agree with Winnie this is just another form oppression, becoz u should always remeber that at the heart of the struugle the oppressors greatest fear was the voice of the oppressed. And what exactly did J.Hud and co do, they completely denied Winnie a voice, how ironic! i guess the next q? is why did they make the film?
I hear that!!!
I agree 1000%
Despicable. I will not support.
Question: Why is this the only place that I’ve heard this story? Why doesn’t something like this get greater publicity? It ought to.
Well we here in SA all knew about her disapproval and many South Africans feel the same. And I feel it is disrespecful to make a film about someones most intimate story and not even grant them a say on it at all.Yes its a story but it is one of the greatest story of OUR SOUTH AFRICAN LIFETIME! And for it to be brought down to such a level is insulting. So this beautiful or what could have been a beautiful story was just a way to make money clearly. Dissapointed SOUTH AFRICAN 20Something Filmmaker!!
A Opera about the life of Winnie opened this year and is still currently running here in South Africa. Winnie Mandela AND HER FAMILY absolutely loved it and gave it her approval!! It will be touring around the would soon. So I think these American filmmakers need to watch it and see what a good life story about the good and bad of Winnie Madikizela Mandela was all truly about. Yes,erhaps this a story that needs to be told by us South Africans.South African*gIRL
The same way they did LIL KIM in the movie NOTORIOUS..how can you make a movie about someones life without consulting the people that are still alive….so disrespectful..now I see why KIM went off!
EXACTLY!!!! I hated that movie by the way. It was so corny.
To Jhud and the producers, directors of this movie. You ignored Ms.Mandela, and her people. Now it’s time to ignore you.
Maybe you too full of yourself, with the weight loss.
This woman has done more than you ever will for us as a people. You did it for profit. you said this morning you had hands on everything you do, well then you could have consulted with her and you look bad in that pic that woman does not look like that. An insult and how can you truly capture someone without spending some time w them in person or watching a lot about their life.
Yuu have lost points now POINTS PLUS this Points minus!!!
Jhud has NOTHING 2 do with this. She just played the role.
Maybe she didn’t but I think the way she looks here is disrespectful, she looks nothing like the former First Lady, Hollywood can’t do any better than this.well here’s one for you, Ms.mandela may not hold an oscar and since Jen is ALL that she should have said if I can’t meet her and speak w her then I will not do it!!Because I respect her and all she has done for MY (our) people. So she can take some blame.
If I played the role of somebody that was still alive, playing her during such tragic and particular time of her life, I would try to reach her, even as a professional actress willing to deliver the best job and make the person concerned, who is winnie, proud. As far as Im concerned its more than natural to know if the main person approved and if she can help me playing her life. Just saying. Jennifer acted as a robot who wanted her money and critical acclaim portraying another black sad story that usually gets oscar buzz. Period.
I wonder why she didn’t speak out about the BBC film Mrs. Mandela with Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda)? I saw the trailer for that one on Youtube and it looked more realistic.
I personally just dont understand how you can write a story about someone’s personal life without interviewing or talking to them. It makes me feel like 75% of the movie is made up bc they dont know her inner thoughts and feelings. Unless they are psychic!! So i guess someone just sat down and started making up feelings and emotions. This is ridiculous and disrespectful.
I still plan on seeing this movie; it looks good. http://tiny.cc/bb13l
BOMB…is right. That’s what we hopes happens it BOMBS!!!! Because it just is not right!!! One thing as African americans we can not support something w our money, maybe those greedy guts in Hollywood will pay attention the next time.
P.S. Someone is learning something cause the blogs report about the Mahalia biopic that the estate has already been consulted and gives their blessings. And they call Fantasia stupid.
I feel her. I’d be madd as hell If I were in her shoes. How disrespectful of the writers and producers.
WOW!!! First of all J.Hud I am disappointed she didn’t do her homework for her roll. She didn’t try and contact Winnie and get a feel for her as a person so she could truly embody the role. Will Smith did with Ali and pursuit of happiness. How they could not include them in such a major project is kind of baffling to me. Oh well, I feel a law suit coming. Yikes
Today the whole of Africa is watching the funeral of one of its struggle heroes – Albertina Sisulu – the late Walter Sisulu’s wife – and when the camera’s zoom on Winnie – the stadium, filled with tens of thousands, erupts – Africa LOVES WINNIE MANDELA – there’s no half minded, unresearched, American movie that’s going to change that.
White people…
The picture I see here of Jen in her portrayal of this woman is disgusting. She was @ the church I attend last year and Ms.Mandela looks 10000% better than that.I don’t even want to see it bootleg and I don’t bootleg.I hope it makes not one dime. And you all know they believe in whodo, voodo, shoodo, over there and these white folk (and Jen) done stirred them up.Jen can take some responsibilty. How can you effectively portray someone especially this woman w out speaking with her or asking her input.I would have said can’t do it, not real.Jen phony anyway, surgery and all, who she fooling??????
LOL @ voodo comment, you right though they done stirred up the wrong folk.I think this money is n ot going to be a big hit. Cause she does not look like Ms.Mandela.This is the REAL insult on Jens part, she looks nothing like her.Hollywood sucks and Jen played herself this time sucking up to these folk.
shame poor winnie
poor winnie i love this woman
Can’t help but agree with her.

In a time where there is supposed to be an abundance of “information” people are more un-informed than ever as the so-called “educated” or more un-educated than ever. Sadly, it has always amazed me that the African (globally inclusive those in the mainland and in the Diaspora) are so mentally and emotionally inadequate and blinded by their own distorted ability to reason and question their own pre-suppositions.
The writer of in this column called “MEME” I assume you are of African descent yet you fail to be objective or even rational and pre-suppose Winnie Mandela as “Evil”. Are you really on this planet?
Do you (like many others) have to “swallow” every propaganda and social engineering that “Westerners” imbue into your brain? Tell me and tell the world HOW do you classify any person caught up in a “struggle” they DID NOT initiate (as take away the action…in this case Apartheid/Colonialism etc…and there would be no RE-ACTION) as “evil”?
Are you really that mentally deficient to fail to understand what any one “oppressed” goes through during such situations? Why did you not campaign actively for the detention of the likes of Botha or Terry Blanche, Hitler or others who benefitted from both Apartheid and Colonial rule or modern day economic slavery which to this day affects even you and members of your own family like millions of other innocent people globally both black and white? Yet you have the foolhardiness to classify the plight of the likes of Winnie Mandela as evil.
Stop being brainwashed if you are “oppressed” and caught up in a struggle in a bid to simply remove that institutionalized oppression that should never have been there in the first place you are the “victim” and NOT THE VICTIMIZER so un-blindfold your mind and do not allow reverse psychology prevent you from looking at “CAUSATION” rather than at symptoms.
It is simple….Take away the action (Apartheid/colonial oppression etc.) and there would never have been a need for a “re-action” of any kind…I am sure your inadequate mind can in its quiet moment understand that.
I am a Diaspora African but I can easily place myself into “HOW” rough and tight things were like during that time of Apartheid (even colonial rule and modern times for blacks globally) so why can you not do the same rather than jump on the bandwagon of blame for “re-actions” that emanated from actions such as “institutionalised systems” that should never have been imposed on any race or people. If you need to blame anyone or persecute anyone chase the creators of systems like Apartheid or colonial rule and those who benefitted from it directly. You now romanticise with the distorted notion of reconciliation yet you fail to see that even the whites in the struggle such as Joe Slovo’s daughter refused to “forgive or forget” the uncalled for murder of her parents…yet you an African jump up and down for joy in a pool of self-gratifying stupidity.
Instead of uniting and rebuilding the strains caused by so-called whites before, during and after Apartheid, you are quick to point fingers at your fellow African globally yet you somehow vindicate those who mastermind the REAL evil and de-stabilisation. You indirectly endorse, vindicate and herald the likes of terrorists such as Terry Blanche or even Cecil Rhodes (giving them a free passage from answering for their terror) yet you chastise your own for being caught up in DEFENCE of their existence in a struggle they neither asked for or wanted. If you are one of those who “NEEDS” to always blame someone or something then try and apportion blame objectively/analytically in the right place and stop showing your mental and emotional inadequacies in public. Stop helping others to systematically annihilate your own race. The beauty of creation is diversity so do not participate in aiding and abetting others into systematically destroying your own race. If your brain cannot fathom the wider picture of things then do the rest of us a good favour and simply shut-up and abstain from passing illogical and un-objective judgements.
