‘ROUND THE WAY: IDRIS GOES OFF / TIA MOWRY GIVES BIRTH / AMERIIE GETS MARRIED + MORE!

Following his performance with soul singer Jill Scott at the BET Awards, Idris Elba stopped to answer questions from the press/media. One question posed by Cheri Saunders of Black Press Radio struck a nerve in his body. When asked to justify his recent comments about the Tyler Perry and Spike Lee feud, he responded:

“Can I be candid? I don’t like all of Tyler Perry’s films. Yes, I did work with Tyler for ‘Daddy’s Little Girls’ because it portrayed a positive image of a black father. I am happy for Tyler’s success…we need Tyler Perry…by going to support his movies, we need to show economic strength. But we are also responsible for elevating film. I’m not with buffoonish characters like Madea or Big Momma.”

I disagree.. I think he knows what sells. The question is, is his work beneficial ?.. Does it challenge convential thinking ?..Does it elevate people on a intellectual and philosophical level ?.. No it doesnt my friend. He knows just how much buffoonish crap to throw in a film to please his constiuents. By doubling down on the stupidity most of our culture believes.. Just because he happens to be black and he employs black actors, doesnt mean he’s sufficient.. Thats like being a blind follower of Obama just because he’s black and not his policies ( which i do support the causes he’s supposed to be representing but its obvious that he’s playing politics )

    5. Regulator

The issue with Tyler Perry is he looks to be more comfortable in Madea’s character than he is as himself. Maybe he thinks noone can see through that. A grown big man dressing up like a woman, cursing, talking about weed and guns and then SLAP some Christian undertone in and he really BELIEVES he’s helping unlift black people. We need some better gatekeepers in the entertainment industry. Idris has a point but he shouldnt have done the movie at all if he’s not behind Tyler as a creative person. Thats the problem, there is always someone willing to do these wack, coonish roles.

      • Regulator

You would never catch Denzel in any of these types of movies BTW.

      • DArealsit

I have noticed that TP is more comfortable being Madea. Even when he is out of character, he somehow gravitates back to her. We don’t need anymore of those types of films. We as a people need to elevate ourselves out of this simpleton, buffoonish routine. But on the other hand, Idris can get it. LOL

      • Chris

Movies aren’t going to elevate black people. Black people need to come together as a village and elevate their damn self.

      • tdubbs

Chris u are right i love your comment, and i love madea, it is what it is, and thats funny, black people also need to laugh so get over the madea’s and go see the damn movie, do your thing tyler, and idris, i bet if u got a fat check from tyler u would do the next madea movie, bet that.

    6. D

I agree, that’s an accurate statement about Tyler Perry.

    7. TRP

Idris sit the fu*k down, we here in America like comedy once in awhile and if Madea or Big Momma can lift a few depressed spirits, let the people laugh. Your ass didn’t have a problem cashing that big check from Madea’s creator though.

      • uncommon

The point is why does it take a man getting in drag always?? How often white asian or even latino comedys do you see a grown man in a fat black womans costume for a an entire movie????? Ill wait. Thats the whole point, its been shoved down your throat so much you actually believe thats comedy.

      • Indigo

@ Uncommon… Robin Williams- Mrs. Doubtfire
        Dustin Hoffman – Tootsie
        John Travolta – Hairspray
        Devine- Hairspray (1988)
Charlies McManus/Charlie Hope – Nuns on the Run
        Liev Schreiber – Taking Woodstock..

That’s just naming a few. It’s good comedy, but the crab in a barrel is what’s the problem here..

      • Keith

The problem is not that other cultures don’t do drag but how many other cultures have the top movies requiring that character to constantly be replayed over and over. You didn’t name one film that was a success that is younger than 20 years old. Count how many black based films were released and how many had buffonish characters. That is the issue here, its not the fact that one time you can play a role, but to do it over and over like there is nothing else to laugh about? No other means to enlighten people besides that strategy?

      • Indigo

Keith… You are thinking wayyyyyy too much about nothing.. “enlighten people” ooookkkkk The problem is,we look for everyone else to solve our problems but ourselves. There should be a moral to every story right? ok… Other cultures?? We aren’t talking about them,we are talking about Americans. Please do more entertainment research. It doesn’t matter if the movies were 10, 20 or 50 yrs old, they were still made. It’s sad people only want to see negativity when there is so much postivity going on. It more acceptable to be a drug addict, drug dealers, robbers and killers coming from a broking home, that’s called entertainment! smh.

    8. Hay-Mon

Leave Tyler alone! If you don’t like his movies; don’t go see them. Truth is no matter who is putting it out; there will always be some foolish character in television/movies. With all the crap in the world; sometimes you need to laugh and not take things so serious all the time. It is ENTERTAINMENT, and regardless of how he puts it out there; Tyler always has some kind of message. He has also done other films WITHOUT Madea, but as always; we as a people will never stick together. When one is doing well AND I might add employing others; all they do is spit in his face…but Idris has gotten a paycheck from one of his movies. IF he wasn’t a fan; he wouldn’t have taken the role no matter what. So sit down Idris; you are confused.

      • Shellbee

Can we mature as a people and stop this silly “dey jus tryna bring a black man down” bullshit every time someone offers a criticism of someone’s work. Idris made it clear why he “cashed that check” on Daddy’s Little Girls—imagery. That’s why he’s not down with Madea—imagery. There are other forms of comedy that do not include buffoonery. Even in Black comedy we’ve had The Cosby Show, Living Single and A Different World. TP is entitled to make the “comedy” shows he wants. Idris is just as entitled to openly criticize them if he sees fit.

    9. sunshyne84

I don’t have a problem with Tyler. There’s an audience for what he does. I just hope to see more of the other films like Daddy’s Little Girls now that he has reached his level of success.

    10. Tiffany

With that accent, Idris could have said whatever he wanted about Tyler Perry and his movies…just saying…

We as a people need to elevate ourselves out of this simpleton, buffoonish routine. The majority of people may like it and it may have had it’s place but enough! But on the other hand, Idris can get it. LOL

Idris Is Allowed To Have An Opinion. Stop The Foolishness

    15. Chris

Movies sole purposes are to be entertaining. If Tyler Perry purpose was to create fundamental films that involved educating blacks wouldn’t he make it? All characters are buffonish; Zack Galafankis character in the succesful Hangover movies are buffonish; the stars of Dumb and Dumber was boofnish. Their sole purpose were for extreme comic relief. Even though Madea is Tyler Perry in a dress I still see similarities to my grandmother in her. Brown reminds me of the guy across the street from my house who wears outfits from the 70s! Doesn’t Idris Elba think portraying a bank robber in a film was buffonery? Or even just a step back for a black man trying to portray positive roles? What example does that set for young black males who’s financially deprived and looking to do anything to earn a quick buck?

Finally a comedic writer comes in make movies black people like and enjoy. That send messages and open the light on what really goes on in the black community. “Madea Goes to Jail” he addressed health issues mainly targeted at black. Raising the awareness of the importance of going to the doctor. Idris Elba is disrespectful and ungrateful. It’s not like he’s handed roles on a regular. He just got the left over role Tom Cruise didn’t want.

People need to stop critiquing Tyler Perry movies and take them for what they are. He did an amazing job on “For Colored Girls” and out of all those beautiful performances not one of the ladies received an award. People are just on this bandwagon because once a black is doing a damn good job we huddle together to HATE; but when it’s something positive we’re more divided then the neighborhoods in Chicago. Get it together!!

    16. ken

Idris Elba needs to stfu. I honestly don’t remember hearing about him until Daddy’s Little Girls.
Yeah all of Tyler’s movies might not be as good as eddie or spike…but hell last i checked i don’t see any of them taking the stand and creating black movies lately.

    17. Indigo

STOP IT ALREADY… GET OFF YOUR SOAP BOXES BEFORE YOU GET A SPLINTER UP YOUR RASS!

      • Indigo

What do all these actors have in common? They are all BIG TIME ACTORS!

What do all these movies have in common?? THEY ARE COMEDIES!!

      • Keith

and besides liev schrieber all of these films are 20 years old!!!! So you can see that no other culutre has to repeatidly play the same buffoonish character over and over in order to make a damn movie. I am open to comedy of all sorts, but if that is the only way we can get comedy made is by appealing to the lowest common denominator then we have major issues.

      • Indigo

Well Keith, I don’t see anyone saying anything to Master P, Or Russ Parr… At some point EVERY Hollywood actor played gay or a woman. It’s entertainment!! I can’t believe you said they were all 20yrs old movies lmao… SMDH

      • Keith

Indigo I am not talking about restricting all roles we play to MLK and Malcolm X, I am talking about diversity in our culture and being represented in a way that shows how diverse we are. Meaning every central character doesn’t have to be a drag queen spouting morality. Why can’t we still make movies like A Soldiers Story, To Sleep With Anger, Love Jones etc and have those stories portrayed along side movies like Friday and House Party. It’s not a all or nothing but it seems like we are forced to have 1 type of movie(s) to represent us.

    18. Indigo

Idris Elba rather do moves like “Losers” and RockernRolla which should have been sent straight to video… I can’t believe he is sitting here bitting the hand that fed him. He isn’t even talented… In two years it’s gonna be Idris who? Just for him being spitful! All of these black folks in the industry have something to say,but never reach out to do a collaboration type film. They are mad Tyler has work and has giving others work. They complain “There’s no work in Hollywood for blacks” This one man alone has taking over the big and silver screen..It’s COMEDY!!! He isn’t the only one that dressed in drag. Tyler has done something no other black director has done, and that’s killing them! Bash Master P or Russ Parr..They make the worst coon movies on film! But they aren’t a “treat” hmmm

    19. Indigo

I guess playing a drug dealer, and bank robber is uplifting…

    20. Indigo

Blacks learn a new word and get all over righteous.
