MTV is set premiere Beyoncé’s half-hour television special entitled “Beyoncé: Year of 4.” The special is premiering on Thursday, June 30th at 7pm EST and takes viewers on a journey through the artistic process of her latest album, 4.

“Beyoncé: Year of 4″ is the story of Beyoncé’s return as an independent woman navigating her company through the rough waters of the music industry, making a personal album that’s unlike anything she’s ever done. After the much anticipated “I AM…” tour ends, Beyoncé finds herself in dire need of a break. Being a workaholic, and wholly dedicated to her career, she never considered taking a year off, but finally listens to her mother’s advice and disappears from the public’s eye. On her year off, Beyoncé travels the world, spends time with her family and husband, Jay-Z (documented by her with her own camera). She gives herself time to reflect on what she’s accomplished and decide what the next chapter of her life will look like. She refuses to let her meteor-like career pass her by and decides to take control of her business, while making an album that is heartfelt and personal. She returns to the studio where she opens up the range of musical choices and invites artists of all genres and styles to collaborate with her. Drawing from the music she grew up listening to in the 90′s, like Michael Jackson, Prince and Boyz ll Men, she creates a sound that is warm and familiar, yet futuristic and experimental. On “4,” Beyoncé makes a conscious effort to do something completely different without playing to the mainstream expectations of her… and she succeeds.

I thought her public speaking skills have improved significantly. I think she is a very analytic speaker, bc of her profession and have to watch everything she says, causes her to have choppy or slow sentences and her slight country twang most people have down south doesn’t help. President Obama stutters and have slow sentences when being interviewed(not speeches), bc people hang off of every word he speaks and he wants to make sure he doesn’t give room for people to criticize him about something taken wrongfully. Completely agree. Beyonce USED to talk like she discontinued school in the 2nd grade. But now? Now she’s very aware of what she says and it’s obvious she thinks before she speaks because, like I’ve said before, she’s a celebrity and has to be careful about her word choices. I just want to ask all the beyonce fans one question: why are you of fan of hers? I mean it’s not to be mean or anything, but what is the reason? is it because the way she sings? If so she tends to over sings too much in my opinion. Is it because of her style? if so I seen it all before on Madonna, Shakira, Patti, Lady Gaga, and many more. Is it because she can dance? Honestly…she does sing great and any singer and musician would acknowledge her control, technique(she actually can run up and down a scale and riff all day), vocal phrasing and musical ear that is out of this world. With the chords on “4″ you can hear that she stacked many of the chords of DC3 and that takes a “ear”. If you just listen to run the world, or pon de floor original there is not a tonal quality to the song at all just pretty much percussion. The fact she created one out of nowhere is amazing. She actually uses her voice as an instrument and it has a great tonal quality! From a musical perspective she introduced (especially her first album) alot of middle eastern melodies and chords into her songs. This can be compared to John coultrane when he played “my favorite things”. That was a milestone for music and she did the same thing in rnb. Just listen to Dangerously in love. Those chords aren’t chords/keys used in standard rnb. I can go on and on why I respect her musically, but you can’t go off of what you see mainstream to judge her musicality. You have to take a look at videos where she is building a song or rehearsing and take notice of whats going on. Take a look back at old movies like fighting temptations, where she uses neo soul. It obvious she is very versatile by the way. People also have to realize “big” voice does not mean better voice musically. A singer must realize that it is a instrument as well as the others (horns, guitar, and drums) and must know how to blend and shine when needed. Just my take….
But really PrettyB it’s a matter of taste really. Her voice might not be for everyone, just as a Mozart pieces or a Miles Davis piece are not for everyone. But you can’t discredit the musicality behind those individuals, same with Beyonce. And with the songs, thousands of writers make it their job now-a-days to actually write music. The Fact that Yoyo-Ma plays a (famous cellist),plays a Mozart composition does not discredit his musicality at all!
I love me some mozart music and I understand how and why you like Beyonce music, but you cannot honestly say that when you look at other artists like Nicki for example, and not say that you dont be like “hey she done ripped someone off” or say that she is not original… I’m just saying beyonce can sing (true) but she takes on all of other peoples work and makes it seem like she just did it all by herself…she fail to give anybody credit even though they are the ones that helped her out…which is the reason why I dislike…she sets herself as this greedy for attention type of person when she dont give props to those that deserves it..for example Neyo wrote irreplaceable for her and she always says that she wrote it, which led him to the conclusion that he’s never writing another song for her no matter how much the song makes because she fails to credit those who helped her to be where she is now…

That really just makes it seem people are ready to see Beyonce fall. I also have another question, and I just want your honest opinion. You mentioned that Beyonce tends to “over-sing”, but the question is how can she over-sing a song never before sung or performed(speaking of her songs). Those songs have never been sung before, so a standard or bar wasn’t set to essentially “over” sing. For example if you wrote or introducing a song never sung before and you sing it, how can you over sing it? Too many runs and riffs might seem excessive to the audience, but a new song is essentially left up to the artist’s interpretation right?

I love Beyonce, she is refreshing each album.. I was critical about her firing her Dad but that is not for me to say. I love when she opens up and gives us a peek into her life, feelings, motives and aim. People always saying how private she is, but if you listen to her music it is transparent and revealing.. She makes you feel like dreams really can come true.. I really enjoyed this docu. My ambition has evolved, I use to want to be an MC.. I never stopped loving to write. Journaling and reading has been my escape since nine. My dream is to host a modern day talk show, hip, educational, universal, thought provoking, the kind that your man want to come sit in and listen to and you want to watch, if nothing more than to see how professionally fly I am dressed for the day..
