In light of the uproar against their latest RE-CIVILIZED NIVEA FOR MEN advertisement, Nivea has issued a statement on their OFFICIAL FACEBOOK page:

“Thank you for caring enough to give us your feedback about the recent “Re-civilized” NIVEA FOR MEN ad. This ad was inappropriate and offensive. • educate yourself on subliminal messaging. if it wasn’t a big deal why didn’t they use the same wording for the ad that had a white dude in it? At this point, it is what it is. They are not the first and definitely won’t be the last to do it.

Maybe this is your warped sense of truth but it’s an offensive truth none the less. The head in the hands is not uncivilized its someone who is choosing to have a beard and afro hair, so if the underlying issue is that black people are less presentable or professional when they sport that look than this ad is incorrect, as for the apology, it’s not accepted, ads go through a process before it’s okay to print so you’re telling me that no-one in the process thought that this might be slightly offensive?

I don’t see anything wrong with the ad. Subliminal? Maybe. It’s all a matter of opinion. I am more worried about subliminal messages such as no black male teachers in the classroom, no black students in my PhD program besides myself, sky high illiteracy, sky high job unemployment, low test performance scores, high incarceration rates, too many mofos wanting to be rappers instead of getting an education, etc. Let’s stop picking hairs and start prostesting real injustices.

OAN: I partially co-sign with AIYCH and STLOPINION. I have been natural for 10 years and I have received so many negative comments from black women about my hair, in which I include the comment “you have good hair, you can go natural” as a negative comment. However, all the white people I encounter wonder why more black women don’t wear their hair like mine.

This has nothing to do with if you think your hair is bad or good. Every race deals with managing hair problems. This ad is offensive because they are trying to say black people are not civilized. This reminds me of that commercial where they say “it’s so easy a caveman can do it” and the caveman was offended. Rihanna need to stop them from using her to draw in black consumers with their racist ass.

If there is any doubt as to why there should be outrage look at what the ad is presupposing: the clean-shaven, short-hair look is civilized however the afro and beard are antithetical to a civilized group.

    .

If Africans were not herded from their homeland and treated like primitive animals under the pretext of lacking a sophisticated ‘civilization’ and being primitive, then this ad could be taken at face value as trying to promote a very commonly held professional aesthetic (white people, too, are discouraged from wearing their hair long and having too much facial hair).

    .

However, clearly you cannot ignore the historically offensive similarity between Afrocentric values being depreciated under 400 years of European subjugation and this advert’s dismissal of a clearly popular African-American hair style as being unsuitable for a civilized person.

    .

I’d argue that had they used the word professional instead of civilized, critics would still be correct to condemn this ad on the grounds of the overt similarity between the historically racist claims used against our people in the past. The fact that Nivea would go so far as to recycle the same racist terminology (“re-civilize”) that was used during the slave trade to justify the rape, killing, enslavement and then discrimination shows that there is absolutely no regard for black history or black dignity in this ad.

    .

Anyhow, we do so much more to harm ourselves than this ad or any white person could do to us today. We kill ourselves, tolerate an indifference to everything that rappers talk about by continuing to support their music and materialism. So really, until we get our own houses in order and start upholding our own dignity, WE ARE FOOLS TO EXPECT OTHERS TO EXTEND ANY DIGNITY IN OUR DIRECTION. Jewish brothers and sisters would have had someone at Nivea answering to calls for a dismissal in a heartbeat.

    .

We don’t hold any such power largely because we continue to perpetuate our own powerlessness. A group that stays largely educated has much more power than any form of racism can ever impose onto them.

I only think it’s offensive if they don’t use the same “uncivilized ” wording on their ads with white men. If it’s all the same…then they’re just attacking overgrown hair and facial hair and suggesting that look is unkempt. Now, if the ads with white guys in them don’t have the same theme and use the same language-we have a big problem. I don’t honestly think they meant to offend anyone. I dont think they’d hire a black model and pay him just to do that. He may have even been hired or photographed by a black person. I just think they might be idiots.

Ok i’ll say it maybe we are being overly sensitive. I didnt even get why the ad was “racist” until i read the comments.he is holding a dummy head with an afro, and and unkempt beard.the point of the ad is men should look better and take care of their self. why does everything another race does it has to be a subliminal jab to black people? So i guess black people cant appear in ads unless its worded differently than if it was a white dude in picture. how about we save our outrage for things that are truly racist

I understand where you are coming from. Although I know racism still exists I try not to use the race card and give people the benefit of the doubt. But the fact of the matter is the ad was inappropriate. Whether or not Nivea meant to offend the black community is up for debate. I was leaning towards it being a bad branding. Big market companies have to be very careful the way they word and promote their products and 100 percent those individuals who were unhappy about the portrayal of black men and voiced their opinions about the matter.

This clearly shows the need for diversity at companies and businesses. With a diverse staff, someone would have spoken up and stated ‘this is not cool’. Everyone would have went back to the drawing board and came up with something smart, clever, stylish with marketing appeal.

@AIYCH you sound retarded. So basically you are implying that because some black people don’t rock natural hair they are not black enough? or are traitors to the black race? or what? thats the most demented thing I’ve heard in forever. The fact that some black people choose not to have natural hair has NOTHING to do with the above ad and issue with Nivea. Stay on topic and stop going off on a demented tangent.

P.S. I have natural hair by choice and I absolutely DO NOT disrespect other sisters who chose to relax their hair.

when you go to Nivea’s Facebook page where the apology is posted, you will read all sorts of uneducated, incentive remarks from white people, telling black people how they should feel and react to ad and to get over it. One comment went as far as to say slavery was a long time ago and they had nothing to do with it or lived in that era, yet they still benefit off slavery to this day, corporately, educationally, judicially, monetarily, and religiously.

White people still and will always be evil beings. When your skin cannot change from the sun, you don’t have change in you genetically. They always think they are some superior being and can tell us what should and should not disrespectful to our community. We have standards just like other races and demand for those standards to be respected if you want us to support your products, that we should not be supporting anyway.

Agreed. The white man today is the son of his father, and he will do all the deeds and misdeeds of his father. Many black people do not realize that there are still lynchings that are ritualistically performed all across the U.S. It simply no longer gets reported.

There is one race, the human race. As corny as that sounds it is scientifically sound. When it comes right down to it racism is really cultural insensitivity. There are many cultures but one race. The only reason people have light or dark skin, different features etc. is because their bodies have adapted to the specific environment that they live in. In an area with lots of sun our bodies have darkened to sheild and filter the sun. In an area with little sun our bodies have lightened to become sensitive to small amounts of sunlight. This really shows the extent of God’s creativity and shouldn’t be used to put any race down. OUR DIVERSITY IS HOW THE HUMAN RACE HAS SURVIVED around the world. This terribly stupid ad is about cultural prejudice and ignorance.

The comments from the preceding two idiots is why the black man must read these scriptures with proper understanding, because if not, he will be victimized by the gatekeepers of the white man’s kingdom, that being the average black woman. The scriptures tell us who the so-called “white man” is and what his purpose is. Christ did not speak to Satan about the white man in Matthew or Luke 4th chapter, but who the white man is and his role is specified throughout the scriptures and it is irrefutable. Revelation 12:3,9 tells us that the kingdom of the Roman Empire is the kingdom of SATAN, which kingdom was reborn during the Renaissance (Rev 13th chapter). In regards to this nonsense about skin color being predicated on where you’re from and that “Vitamin D deficiency” nonsense, that is the white man’s junk science and has never been proven because it cannot be proven. The so-called “white man” always develops scientific theories that justify his inbred maladies (that being lack of melanin, sexual perversion, and wanton violence). The eskimo and Inuits have been in the region of the north pole for millenia and are different shades of brown. To be “human” literally means to be from the ground (meaning different shades of brown). The lack of melanin is a divine curse. The scriptures are clear that when God created the nations which come of Adam, he SEPARATED THEM (Deut 32:8).

They believe it wholeheartedly like you do (in the reverse) and do not see themselves as evil or anything. They see themselves as following the “truth” written in the Bible. You’re just like them, except maybe you would wear a black sheet over your head? Both you and the KKK need to have have several seats! lol.

As you stated, I’ve never known ANY “pro-black” or “black militant” organization to engage in wanton murder and terrorizing of caucasians. Not one. That idiot does not know that the KKK is a druidic occult organization that uses “Christianity” as a guise. The murder of those thousands of black men, women, and children by the KKK was satanic ritual sacrifice. This is where their costumes and ritualistic fire burning comes from. What type of “Christian organization” would have leadership that designate themselves under biblically abominable terms like “grand dragon” and “grand wizard”. Again, it is ESSENTIAL that the black man return to the scriptures so that he can regain his right mind and power under God, because most of these black women have been programmed to sabotage him spiritually (Ecclesiastes 7:26-28).

The commentary by “Aiych” was very astute and on point (as usual for the most part) and in addition to that, on a deeper level, many black people get angry at ads like this because it is a sign that “daddy” (the white man) doesn’t love them. For example; you have black women crying over the death of the caucasian policeman who allegedly gave “deep advice” (“Work hard!”)to a black boy after he bought the boy cookies. To an astute person that signifies possible (if not probable)p*dophile behavior, but to many in the black community, it was a lesson that should “galvanize” the black boy to great heights of achievement lol.

@Judah, what did you read from “Planet of the Apes”? That movie was doing the most subtextually. And just happen to premiere during the London riots.

    Reply /0
    • JUDAH

      @LEO

Lol, the Planet of the Apes movie was BY FAR the best film of the year, which I knew it would be because all “Planet of the Apes” movies are revelatory. The so-called white man was basically telling on himself, and his knowledge of who the blacks of the captivity are. He knows that we are not “Africans” which is why, from the start, he depicts the planned kidnapping of the “chimps” by Africans (Deut 28:68). The movie is in parable form and you must know the Bible to know what is being implied. The mother at the start represents the nation of Israel (Revelation 12:1). Notice that after she is “killed”, the caretaker for the chimps states how he had to “put down the other twelve”, speaking of the 12 tribes of Israel (Rev 12:1, Genesis 37:9,10). Her son, “Caesar” (meaning “king”) represents Jesus Christ, the savior of the nation of Israel (Matt 1:21, Matt 15:24, Acts 5:31, etc.). His caretaker, “Will Rod-man” (meaning “he is the deliverer of punishment” Psalms 125:3), is the serpent who cares for “Caesar” and the other “chimps” and unwittingly returns knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to them through the “serum” (Rev 12:14). Caesar is raised in the home of “Will Rod-man” and wears the “leash” which represents the “yoke” that the so-called white man (in the Bible known as “Esau”) has on the nation of Israel (Genesis 27:38-41, Jeremiah 30:8, Deut 28:48, etc.). The prison scene is of course an allusion to the imprisonment of blacks in the penal system (Isaiah 42:22). The “serum”, of course, is the Holy Spirit that raises the “apes” from their dead state (Ezekiel 37:1-14). The screenwriter even has Caesar allude to Ezekiel 37th chapter in the parable that Caesar gives to the orangutan (representing the tribe of Levi) about the unity of the apes using the broken stick (Zech 11:15) and how the stick must come together for the apes to be strong (Ezekiel 37:16-21). The chimps that have inhaled the serum have “green eyes” because they have been enlightened by the Holy Spirit (Psalm 19:8, Matt 6:22). Once Caesar enlightened his brethren, he fought back against the oppressor and the paramount scene is when he fought back and spoke when that devil tried to put that electrical rod on him (Proverbs 31:8,9, Isaiah 35:6). There were blatant allusions to the race war (Jeremiah 51:20-26, Zech 9:13-17, 10:3-5, etc.). The “Golden Gate” bridge is an allusion to the words of Christ referring to the “strait GATE” that must be crossed to get to the “golden city” (Matt 7:13, Rev 21:21). Caesar rode the horse into battle just as Christ will (Rev 19:11-21). The forest that the apes eventually made it to is the kingdom of heaven or “paradise” (which is a Greek word meaning “garden” or “forest” Luke 23:43, Rev 2:7). Note that the apes all climbed trees at the end, meaning that they were teachers that had received knowledge, wisdom, and understanding (Psalms 1:1-3, Isaiah 55:13, Isaiah 61:3, Mark 8:22-26, etc.). Caesar climbed the largest tree because it represented the tree of life (Rev 2:7, 22:2,14). Overall a phenomenal film. Five stars out of five lol. If you get a chance, go to youtube and type in “29th scroll 6th verse”. The white man knows who he is according to the Bible.

o_O I need to see this movie.

Anytime there is a popular movie with a chimp or monkey and a white human I assume that the chimp is a stand in for a black person (Tarzan, King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, Curious George even). It’s too much of a loaded symbol to read it otherwise, at least for me. By using a chimp and a white person, Hollywood will deal with black/white relations in a way that would be taboo if it was a black person instead of a chimp.

The funny thing is that the connection has always been incredibly obvious, it’s barely hidden. People make the connection between blacks and apes anytime a white politician says something about chimps when alluding to blacks, but when it’s a movie it goes right over people’s heads for some reason.

There is also a book called Ishmael where the main character is a mountain gorilla. He always had the potential to be intelligent, but didn’t realize it until he was taken away from his home, sold into captivity, kept as a pet, educated, and eventually became “enlightened” I guess. The owner who educated him was Jewish, probably a white Jew, and he changed the ape’s name from Goliath to Ishmael. The book itself is ok, and I don’t agree with the author’s ideology but the choice of a chimp character was interesting, especially given the backstory and symbolism of chimps.

We live in a very racially sensitive time. While there is plenty of racism that plagues us everyday, there also is a lot of “reaching” going on. To me, the outrage that has came from this ad is an example of “reaching.” When I seen this ad for the first time, the first thing I thought I was “Oh, it’s a caveman he’s holding. We are living in civilized society. Glad the guy shaved.” I never seen any racist undertone until it popped up all over the internet. I think people took this to a whole new level, do to how racially sensitive we are. Do NOT get me wrong. There is PLENTY of racism that goes on in the media and in our lives everyday. But this isn’t really an example of it. Think of it this way; If it was a white guy, would you have thought twice about it? Of course not. The man doesn’t have a hair cut and his face isn’t shaven…come on. Relax. It’s more important issues going on in the world than this.

the mask the men were holding both look like cavemen masks and the men looked clean and “civilized” so what’s the problem to be exact. I’m African American but I was not offended at all by this ad to be honest.

No it does not look at all like a “caveman” seeing as the cavemen were caucasian. That head in the black man’s hand has an afro and a beard. The white man is a h*mosexual by nature so he wants to effeminize males of the other races by demonizing facial hair, and it has worked….even resorting to associating facial hair with “terrorism” lol.

Honestly, do you even know who the “cavemen” were, and what it alludes too lol? I for one am not offended at all by the ad, or the white man’s racism. They are in power and should do what they want, which is what they do.

I notice that Nivea like so many companies who want to cover ther butts extended an apology. Now, we all know that if a company stands to face a possible lawsuit, they will do whatever it takes to cover themsleves. Life it’s self is full of racist. As human being we should not have to be subjected to this. I remember when Tommy Hilfiger made the statement regarding afircan americans wearing their wear. People did not purchase their items for a while there. There are some who still will not buy their items. So what’s good for the goose, is good for the gander. We are talking scared of a company loosing money. Best of luck Nivea, hope your sales go down. Is that not what they wanted? They don’t have my vote, I will not be using their products.

Black people are racist toward each other is so many ways. Its not so much of how others perceive us, but how we treat each other. We have so many ignorant and intraracist ways toward each other that needs to be changed before we can expect other races to have more respect toward us. If we can change our intraviolent ways, black male racist attitudes toward their own women, black female hateful attitudes- black women treat white women with more respect too than another black female, black people in general treat whites better than other blacks, black ghetto customer service, black violence, black dumbing down of each other, and did I say black violence….and teh list goes on……There needs to be more ads about more of the black ratchedness

    @GOLDENLADY:

The passage which I`m referring to is John Chapter 8. You can begin reading around the 30th verse. Jesus confronts the Jews about their hypocrisy as they pride themselves. The question here is, who are these Jews which he confronts. If you do your research and look beyond the surface you`ll realize that these are white people. Just like it says in Revelation when it talks about the beast whhen it says, “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man. And his number is 666.” Notice very carefully the part where it says the beast is a man. That`s where wisdom comes in. There are many scriptures in the bible that deal with the white race. It`s just very subtle. There`s no scripture that says, outright, “white people”. You have to use common sense, logic and simple reasoning. The Gentiles, Romans, Jews, etc. were white people that Jesus was up against during the biblical days. I, humbly, submit to you to do the research.

@Judah: I stand corrected. I was referring to The book of John that I aforementioned to GOLDENLADY. I just lost my train of thought as I was typing very quickly. I also realize that you and I are pretty much on the same wavelength as your post are always very THOUGHT PROVOKING.
    Peace.

Peace, in the spirit of my ‘HERO’, Brotha Malcolm X.

I feel as though the problems I have with the ad’s copy have been well-expressed by others. However, I have a secondary issue: the photograph has unnecessarily violent imagery! It looks like an out-take from a B-movie in which someone was beheaded & the corpse is being abused by throwing the head away. With the history of lynching and violence against Black men in this country, I find this photograph completely insensitive!

Instead of getting worked up about an ad that quite frankly tells a truth that black folks need to hear, get off your ass and lets address this achievement gap. Black people are always crying out saying that we are misrepresented. Newsflash! We’re not. There are too many of us for our race to be as uneducated as we are. It is no one’s fault except ours and maybe we need to face that. Angel said “it is what it is”. My thoughts are, let’s make ourselves more relevant and make the changes necessary to address this “negative stereotype”.

The same. In white dominated societies, especially America, it has long been lucrative for blacks to make a mockery of themselves in order to gain monetary success and reaffirm the position of whites at the top of the social hierarchy. It keeps whites from having to do the dirty work most of the time. It has also proven beneficial for a black person to throw other blacks (or anything associated with blacks) under the bus in order to appease people in control, usually whites. For people of color it pays to be self-deprecating if you want to get ahead. And when somebody doesn’t give a sh*t about you, they will let you demean yourself if it benefits them.

So I would not be surprised at all if a black person made this. Also, like I said, there are blacks whose sentiments are not far off from those expressed in the advertisement.
      ——————-
Magazines, ads, television, and other forms of mass media are not where black people should be looking for validation anyway. Those who do will often be upset.

Spike Lee made a movie about the use of black self-mockery, with a black creative force behind it, who was directed to do so by white executives called “Bamboozled”. That is the point of using a black creative force to promote black self-mockery in ads etc., so that when blacks get angry, they can cite the black creative source. In the same manner, the caucasian will conquer a country and then set up a puppet ruler who is the same race as the people in that country in order to forward their agenda and cause confusion.

@ Caramel Apple, come on. You can do better than that. I couldn’t even finish reading your post because it sounded so illiterate and insulting. You are talking about but a few of black people. All ethnicities have their problems, black people have theirs because of the unique and horrific and daily circumstances that we have been exposed to for hundreds of years. If you ever study any other culture you will see that they too have their quirks, horrible as they may be. I’m addressing you because you sound angry, and you have every right to be. But don’t play into generalizing because this is exactly what the people in power want you to do. You are better than that. You are only seeing the EFFECTS of horrible treatment. Systematical, institutionalized, PLANNED, STRATEGIZED, EXECUTED, AND EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE conditioning. that is meant to produce the very EFFECTS that you are so upset about. (These are the types of conditions that create self hate, and hate of your own brothers and sisters.) Start to look at the CAUSE. Do you research about THE CAUSE. Start to get angry about THE CAUSE! Then you will realize that it is impossible to win this game. They always kill our kings (Malcolm, Martin, Micheal, & Pac, and more) and anyone who dares to speak out about the CAUSE of why Black people hate themselves (some can hide it very well) and everyone else (I hide that very well, lol). But one thing you CAN do, even though you can’t win the game because you don’t make the rules, you can change YOU. And become aware of some of the causes of this type of thinking that causes this behavior. My heart reaches out to you, Caramel Apple. You’re lovely. And something tells me you need to hear it. You definitely are on the right track, but harness your anger, put it to good use, study, and maybe you can do one small thing to chip away at the evil in this world: uplift yourself and someone maybe else.

I just watched THE COMPLETE BLUE EYED with Jane Elliott, a woman who understands that the key to ending oppression is changing the behavior of the OPPRESSOR. Also look up “The Eye of the Storm.” White people are treated like people of color in this experiment and find out that not only can they barely survive 2 hours of this treatment, but that they are apart of it.

@Helesetalks, you couldnt finish reading it because you are in denial! Didnt black people kill Malcolm X, Pac- wasnt he killed by blacks with a bad attitude. Black are responsible for their bad attitudes and behavior, we do it to our selves, cant blame the white man for everything. Its always slavery and its always the white man, white racism… bull.. we arent the only ones that have been oppressed but the only ones acting like savages. Did I make up Bill Cosby’s tour? Did I make up the Millian Man march? DO black men not bash black women as an excuse to date outside of their race more than any other race of men? Do black men kill each other more than any other group? DO black womn have a reputation for bad attitudes? you are delusional and in denial.. like so many other absent minded blacks…typical

I dont deal with white folk racism to any memorable extent compared to dealing with trifling black folk….my neighborhood went from brand new to trashed by uncivilized blacks and property value not only dropped because of the housing market, but because of the violence and crime brought in by black savages…black women on the job lazy and mad if you get awards and raises by whites…black haterade is dangerous and responsible for half the black violence….black clerks have attitudes and I am suprised when they smile and bring their lazy behinds from behind the counter to help another black when they break their backs stumbling helping white folk….you are in denial..we need another million man and a million woman march!
