Singer Alicia Keys, alongside actress Demi Moore & Jennifer Aniston grace the cover of Glamour magazine’s October issue. The three of them have joined forces to direct a series of short films for Lifetime’s Five, a series of films about women and breast cancer and how the illness affects their lives. Alicia keys will be contributing her short film entitled Lili. Among other things, the 30 year-old musician/songwriter also shared what inspired her to start directing a film of her own:
On choosing to direct her Five film ‘Lili’:
“After I read the scripts, I felt like this was something important, and I wanted to be a part of it. I chose Lili because she’s close to my age and I understood the family dynamic. I had an immediate idea of what I could bring to it.”On reality music shows like American Idol:
“Initially, I felt like it was showing people that to be an artist you’re just supposed to get on TV. But as time passed, and the industry changed, I started thinking of it as an outlet for people who otherwise wouldn’t have any opportunity to be heard. Now I think it’s a good thing. When you’re talented, you’re talented.”On the breakthrough moment she had while in Egypt (it inspired her son’s name too!):
“It was a time of transition. There were certain people [I was working with] who weren’t right. I had friends who weren’t right anymore. I was tired and I had overworked myself and burnt myself out. So I went to Egypt by myself. When I saw what was built there, it made me understand how powerful we are, that we can create anything. And I felt like I needed to create things that were timeless too.”

That is how they styled her to look. I’m sure that you remember back when Alicia Keys first emerged on the scene, she was packaged as the “hood” female that could sing and play the piano. The plan was that after she blew up, they could evolve her image to make her more palatable for the “mainstream” (caucasian) audience, which is what we see here. This is similar to the Nivea ad post that this website had about a week ago. The same way that the black man must be fully shaven to ingratiate himself to “mainstream” America, the black woman must straighten her hair. If Alicia Keys had been on this magazine cover with the braids that she sported when she first came out, the themes would’ve clashed. She’s dressed the same (with the same hairstyle) as the two caucasian women, so the theme is conformation. They certainly were not going to have Jennifer Aniston and Demi Moore braid their hair to fit in with Alicia Keys lol. As for the analogy, how is a fruit seed the equivalent of sperm? A fruit seed has all the DNA already inside of it and is a ripened, fertilized ovule. It just needs to be planted in good soil. Sperm still has to fertilize something, an egg. You can’t just dump sperm into a uterus and have it grow into a baby with no genetic input from the mother the same way you can plant an apple seed in the ground and have it grow into a tree. And egg is needed to contribute DNA. Then the womb is like the soil, nutrients are provided, and the baby grows. The entire woman is not the equivalent of soil, since soil contributes no genetic makeup to the seed, only a place for it to grow.
