MUSIC VIDEO: BEYONCE – “1+1″

August 25th, 2011

Beyoncé gets sexy for the camera in the new music video for her favorite song, “1+1″, which she directed along with Laurent Briet and Ed Burke. While the track is not an official single, Columbia Records said today that it’s the first of many videos which will be released to visually tell the story of 4.

I posted this on Beyonce’s site as well: I just wanted to post a quick comment about the video. I would hope somebody that can affect change will see this and redo the video. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the song 1 + 1. The words and feelings in Beyonce’s voice when I first heard it almost brought tears to my eyes. I said to my friend “that song was made out of pure love.” So I have to say how HUGELY disappointed I am in the video. I think Beyonce has made her mark in the music world and is past the point of “sex sells.” That video should have and could have been much better. It could have had so much more of a human touch as opposed to trying to be sexy. Her husband should have been in that video. It should have been softer. To me that video didn’t match the song at all. Whoever’s concept that was, in my opinion, completely missed the mark. I know some people will say the romance may have been “cheesy”, but I think the “sex thing” is so overdone in the music industry. We all know that Beyonce is sexy, it would be nice to just see the normal, human side of an artist well.

I don’t like it!!! It looks the video that would play on the screen in the background during a concert performance. I agree, the production quality is lacking. It just doesn’t work. I did think the video for this song should be a show of simplicity but this is not at all what I had in mind.

Extension of Heat commercial. She has clearly changed marketing and management, WTF was that? She is obviously selling sex, that is why she keeps putting these mini porn tapes out, she’s not promoting creativity, cause u can’t give what u don’t have. B quit trippin’, quit being greedy and go have Ur man some babies, like a wife supposed to do, before he pull ANOTHER Arnold on u!!! Video was horrible, get Ur head right even if u got to Holla at ur girl Karrine!!!

The chorus: ‘Make love to me…’. With those lyrics, it makes sense for the music video to be sexual. The video is attempting to be cohesive to the meaning of the song.

To all that otherness: I don’t personally know Beyonce to even try and life coach her or jab at her family life or the talent God has given her. I don’t consider it my place.

I didn’t like the video that much because I thought it was a little strange, but I thought the effects were creative. Reminded me of the special effects on Beowolf (i.e. the animation on Angelina Jolie’s character). I would have to respectfully disagree with your statements, I am glad that she is still making music, cause I appreciate it.

Well I love it. The level of sexiness cannot be measured here. It’s a very sensual video. Again, she cannot win with some of you. I don’t know what else you would have expected from a song like this. For what the song offered, this video is a perfect representation. Good job, Beyonce, again.

This video gets an Eh, it’s alright. Nothing ignited in me. I was not in a frenzy or like “OH SNAP, This is amazing.” But, I am no longer expecting Beyonce to entertain me. She’s a queen, she can do how/what ever she pleases. And in that regard she creates what she see fit.

Plus, There wasn’t emotions when she was crying or looking into the camera. I instantly thought they put some of that tear stuff you put under your eyes to foster tears to make her cry. Yeah, this is just an “Eh,” video to me. The theatrics didn’t reflect the song.

Love the video and the simplicity of it, the message that she’s providing, not over sexual but enough to introduce the story line of becoming one, of being one together. She is so pretty and very sexy without trying to be.

There was nothing special about this emotionless video. I mean be serious even the tears were a joke!! I didn’t say she wasn’t talented, and her best quality is she is an excellent sellswoman, but I’m not trying to buy sex, I thought she was trying to sell music in the past. U are hilarious!!! The opposite of courage is conformity, so excuse me if I choose not to follow the masses behind a superficial, materialistic, egocentric broad who is allowing a white capitalistic society to use her to pump their ideas that black will never beaccepted as we are( beautiful black skin, natural hair, intelligent, modest ) and for who we are Mothers of humanity, without denying ourselves(blonde wigs, bleached skin, contacts, and under weight). If she was smart, she should’ve released Party, she still have a bit of time left before summer is done and release that video and put this song as a back burner- dvd when she does her tour as a bonus video. Wow, how did you pull up that old video?! Coo tho. Yea, she did take that. Wouldn’t you say that she also added on to the video though? Her whole video wasn’t just the glittery face light tricks. Also, (for those that youtubed the video) she did not play with the slinky either (lqtm!). I find myself defending Beyonce even though I didn’t completely like the video. I found myself remembering the

Jim Jarmusch quote: “Nothing is original… Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic.” Interesting spin.

I somehow think it is coo that she brought this art from Henri-Georges Clouzot to more people. I hope she gave them some credit or collaboration at least!!

      Reply /0
    • Marles

@CookieForYourThoughts Of course she’s not going to copy anything verbatim (she’s not trying to get sued), but there’s no denying that L’enfer heavily influenced the 1+1 video. I find myself liking Beyonce less and less with each video/performance that comes out as being an unoriginal “idea.” Surely, if you can write your own songs/album, you can spend some time to come up with a unique video concept! You are called an “artist” for a reason. Perhaps there’s a silent “con” in front of her occupation title. Had Beyonce been an author, she would be a laughingstock in the literary world for constantly copy/pasting pages if not chapters from other authors’ work and passing them as her own by now. This is embarrassing and she shouldn’t be alllowed to get away with this anymore.

Well, I’m not too big on the song, but I actually thought the video was nice, one of her best in recent times due to the visuals, I think it blends with the guitar. However, I still wish she get OFF this Shakira getup, trying to be overly exotic with the heavy makeup and platinum blonde hair, at some parts I felt like I was watching her Feria commecials. What the label needs to do is put out End of Time, that is the standout track from this album and would get things pumping. But I’m glad I’m not the only one who notices Beyonce’s drastic sexed up image, she can front all she want, but I know the real deal. Jay is still one lucky man by the way.

She is not trying to overdo anything, she is trying to produce something that will be considered as iconic in the next years, and I can guarantee you that artists from the next generations will look up to this woman’s videos and copy and this is exactly what she wants. By this time, I know that Beyoncé knows what she is doing with everything she touches. There is a purpose behind to build her legacy. This video gave me a retro vibe of these old videos from the 70′s-80′s. It was sensual, sexy and stunning, very simple and even erotic, still done with taste. I wasnt honestly expecting more, not only Beyoncé had basically done it all while staying true to her herself and her own artistry, but the song doesnt need much. Great job Beyoncé.

    • Skyler

True with building her legacy. But the thievery is just low down shameful to people who really love her music and want videos of her creation not distinct copies of other artist that are true to their craft. Check it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j306-_ypJM8

    • giman

I didnt check it and Im sure the video was not the first and wouldnt be the last to do that, it’s just like saying MJ was a thief because he took James Brown’s moves and was inspired by Astaire, and all these artists copying each other, just because something was done first doesnt mean other people can not do it, it’s ridiculous, so you did it first so nobody else is allowed to do it again? Please. I’ve seen Beyoncé showing raw emotions in Ring The Alarm video, crying, next thing I saw Janelle Monae crying in her video, and recently Jill Scott doing the same thing as Janelle, I’ve seen Rihanna copying a whole photoshoot for her video and also stealing from Kelis who really cares? All you have to do is make it your own and put your twist to it. If anything the artists that get copied should be flattered because it’s artists like Beyoncé who make them relevant again and talked about. Somebody saw the genious in their work and put that to light. Why do you think I said younger artists will copy her? Because it’s a cycle, she is copying in your eyes, twenty years from now, someone will re-do this. The time you take to complain about who created what is making her more popular because you’re dedicated to her. Last time I checked she everytime mentionned where she got her inspirations and these ppl get their credits. I’m sorry but you’re irrelevant.

    • Danielle1

@giman – I see what you’re saying, and agree for the most part, however you should take a look at it. It’s one thing to be inspired but there was def copying. And yes, I think that Rihanna copied LaChapelle’s work in her S/M video. It’s one thing to take an obscure dance move and highlight it, however it’s another thing when in a video you lift scenes.
I don’t think it’s BEYONCE personally- – obviously there are creative people and directors who know what look/feel they’re going for.
I think there’s a fine line and this time it’s been crossed.

The underlying message im getting from all of you geniuses and creative directors ( NOT) is that this was not what you expected………in my book…that means the artists have done their jobs! KUDOS !!! to Beyonce and Kudos to the directors for not being predictable and visually feeding us the lyrics or being too literally in every frame yet feeding the imagination so that the song leaves room for or own imaginations to do some work! Maybe Jay gave her the idea, in celebration of life passed who loved music and was loved by others, maybe release a video in celebration of the artist and the art of music and the love of Aaliyah’s that her fans had for her who was introduced to us via music.

See, I don’t care to see the video and you wanna know why, because i do not care to know how much Beyonce loves Jigga. Maybe if Q was on the track it wouldve surely helped the delivery of the song and then most importantly it will more so have focused on being inlove in general, not Beeyonce’s love for J.. Who cares, she tried to have a top secret wedding but perfers to write every other song about him. Sidenote to Mrs. CArter, Noone cares how much you love Jay boo boo.

everybody has a problem when Beyonce wears weave but 99% of Black women I see are not rocking afro puffs and natural styles.. GTFOH with that.

I thought the video related to the song, simple, not overly sexual and was a bit dramatic. Some people dont appreciate anything, regardless to what or how she would have done this video, they will always have something negative to say. Life must suck to always see things from the same point of view.

and KIDS are not for everybody! GEESH! That is the problem now in the black community, everybody thinks everyone should sit down and raise kids.. No, I respectfully beg to differ.

This video makes my head hurt? I first saw this video debut late last night. So I thought maybe, I’m just tired. Just watched it again same thing! It’s probably the visual effects. Anybody notice all the subtle, but weird imagery @ 2:15 and then thru out the end?

Very odd use of 4 minutes. I’m just saying…

This video was lame. Beyonce greased up in baby oil? and that greasy weave was not cute. Beyonce is not trying to build any legacy, she’s trying to force it upon herself. She will be looked at in the same manner as Vanity and Peebles of the past generation – Not holding much weight (no disrespect to the 80′s but come on) There is no substance to Beyonce’s music and singing songs harder doesn’t help make them less lackluster

Co-sign! I was listening to her album 4 and it hit me, how can this heffa make songs about hearbreak n all when she’s happily married?. It seems like she lacks personality that she has to make something up in order to stay relevant to some of those women bying her album. That’s not to say I won’t bounce to her music when hearing it in the club but she’s a fake… sorry!

@star Uhm she’s singing from previous experiences. DUH. Best Thing You Never Had IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE!! She was singing about her heartbreak in high school.

@ Emily, ehh yeah that wasn’t heard to figure out.. but what about 70% of the album?? No lie, her songs are catchy but I question the sincerity and orininality of her lyrics, perhaps Solange is the one who gives her inspiration for the lyrics:)

I like the song, but the video was horrible. I would have like to see it being more of a movie with her and a man at home, being a happy couple with a child. JMO.
