RANDOM PICS: WYNTER GORDON PERFORMS IN NY – ARE YOU FEELING HER BETTY DAVIS INSPIRED LOOK?

Singer Wynter Gordon attended and performed at Beatstock 2011 in Farmingville, New York this past weekend. The rising star, who is gaining a big fan base internationally, sported an afro, floral crop top, cut off shorts and silver boots at the gig.

At first glance, I was immediately reminded of 70s FUNK & SOUL singer/songwriter Betty Davis (LINK). Best known for being Miles Davis’ 2nd wife and muse, it is evident that Betty was the inspiration for Wynter’s recent look. Check out the vintage photos below.

‘ROUND THE WAY: TIMBALAND & MISSY ON WORKING W/ AALIYAH + CLIP OF UPCOMING AALIYAH SPECIAL ON BET

Although it feels like just yesterday, August 25th will mark the 10th year following the tragic passing of R&B singer Aaliyah. Check out this preview clip from Aaliyah: One In A Million, BET’s upcoming tribute to the late singer. In the video, Timbaland and Missy Elliott recall the very first time they learned that they would be working with Ms. Aaliyah Haughton after she heard and enjoyed a track demo made by them:

We did a record called “Sugar & Spice” that Timbaland and another young man took into Atlantic Records, and when they heard that record they liked the sound and it was something they had never heard before. So they said, ‘Let’s put you all in the studio with Aaliyah.’ And we were excited. [...] I gotta thank her [Aaliyah] because she heard the specialness in us. Continue

According to the LA Times, R&B veteran, Brandy has inked a new deal with Sony Music Entertainment, in a joint venture deal between RCA and producer Breyon Prescott’s Chameleon Records.

“Throughout her career, Brandy has consistently won the vote as everyone’s favorite female vocalist,” Peter Edge, chief executive of RCA Music Group, said in a statement. “I am sure that in her next chapter at RCA and in partnership with Breyon Prescott, we will record her most exciting music to date.”

RCA Records is newly restructured, so Brandy joins a label where she’ll be on a roster that includes Kings of Leon, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, R. Kelly, Ke$ha, Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake.

MAG COVERS: ESPERANZA SPALDING COVERS T MAGAZINE

Grammy award winning singer-musician Esperanza Spalding covers the latest edition of T Magazine (TIME STYLE). The 26 year-old jazz star has been the talk of the music industry since her “out of nowhere” Grammy win for ‘Best New Artist’ last year. However, she isn’t NEW to the music scene at all, she has been perfecting her skills for years. Read a snippet from the feature below:

“Nobody has the guts to say it to my face, but some people in the jazz community don’t think I am doing real jazz,” Spalding said, a little perturbed. This comes from the old anti-jazz prejudice: if it is popular, it can’t be jazz — a reason they recategorized Norah Jones from jazz to pop when she got popular. But Spalding is jazz, all right. In terms of genetics, her bass playing, classically articulated, is a lot like her voice: light but strong, not afraid of melody or happiness. Nor is she averse to pure scat — scat being that ancient (20th century) form of wordless vocal improvisation that the young people who watched her beat out Justin Bieber for 2010’s best new artist might have mistaken for a new kind of tweet.

Notice too that she did not come out of nowhere; she has been working in the trenches for her entire adult life. [ READ MORE ]
