EVENTS: KANYE & JAY-Z’S ‘WATCH THE THRONE’ LISTENING PARTY + OUR TWO CENTS ON THE EVENT & ALBUM

Rappers / entrepreneurs Kanye West and Jay-Z were all smiles at the exclusive listening event for the highly-anticipated release of their album, Watch The Throne (Available August 8th). The event was held at the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History on Monday, August 1 in NYC.

Concrete Loop was in the house for the listening session and let’s just say it was very space aged. They confiscated all phones and cameras at the door and I spotted a couple of celebrities getting heated when they had to give theirs up too. The whole listening event was on another level and before it actually started, Kanye greeted the invited guests with smiles and hugs and seemed to be in a chipper mode. He looked excited about the whole experience and it was the happiest I’ve seen him in a minute. After awhile, we peeped Beyonce and Jay-Z stroll in with security (Julius of course) to get their seats. Following them, were singers Kelly Rowland and Solange Knowles. A lot of celebs were seated randomly inside the listening including: Q-Tip (who is featured on the album), Nas, Idris Elba, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Steve Stoute, Busta Rhymes, Teyana Taylor, DJ D-Nice and designer Tory Burch (more photos below).

After some confusion with seating, the lights started to dim and the effects started. For those of you who have never been to a planetarium, here is a little description of the set up. We were sitting in a dome shaped room and the ceiling was pretty much a movie theater screen. Our chairs were positioned so we could look up and I believe some of them even reclined but ours didn’t. LOL. Big speakers were in the middle of the room and there were also some aligned on the walls (for maximum listening pleasure). When the music started, the ceiling started showcasing stars, planets, moons, meteors and more. As the album played, each scene changed and I’m guessing Kanye was very hands on with this, because you can tell his made sure that the music matched the scenes we were observing. After the listening/viewing (keep reading below to hear my thoughts on each song), Jay-Z briefly spoke to the crowd as Kanye sat on the side smiling from ear to ear. Jay said it took them “about 9 months to complete the album” and it was a “process of three incarnations/stages”. They had to bring the musicality down a little more so it could be more cohesive. He thanked everyone and then they proceeded to usher people out for the second listening/viewing session.

THE NEW MUSIC REVIEW

Chris Brown feat. Kevin McCall – Strip (full) – listen
“Deuces” collaborators Chris Brown and Kevin McCall reunite for the brand new song, “Strip,” produced by The Bizness. Chris Brown is ready to release his brand new mixtape, Boy In Detention on August 5th. Perhaps the new track will appear on the tracklisting.

Miguel – Superhero (full) – listen
Crooner Miguel has been writing and recording music for years, since before his debut album, All I Want Is You, so there’s no telling whether or not “Superhero” is new material or if it’s something he cooked up a while back. Either way, it’s good to hear music from him.

Joe – Gone Away (full) – listen
“Gone Away,” some new material that’s surfaced from Joe is produced by The Neptunes, with Pharrell chatting at the top of the record. It kind of feels like The Neptunes’s earlier work, from the early 2000′s, which had a really feel-good vibe. Supposedly, Joe is working on a new album, with no official information out yet.

Kevin Cossom feat. Joe Budden – Cold (full) – listen
We haven’t heard much from Kevin Cossom since the release of his single, “Baby, I Like It,” featuring Fabolous and Diddy, however he is still hard at work on his debut album, which he hopes to get out this year. Check out this brand new track produced by long time friends and collaborators, The Runners.

MAG COVER: J. LO COVERS VANITY FAIR, SPEAKS ON MARRIAGE, DIVORCE & LOVE

With her surprisingly recent divorce from her husband, Marc Anthony, singer/actress Jennifer Lopez has finally opened up to Vanity Fair magazine in their newest September 2011 issue. The 42 year-old mother of two shared a bit on the reality of marriage as well as her undying optimism for love:

On what she realized before untying the knot:
“I’m a hopeless romantic and passionate person when it comes to love,” Lopez explains, describing the passage that has brought her to her current state of mind. “It’s not that I didn’t love myself before. Sometimes we don’t realize that we are compromising ourselves. To understand that a person is not good for you, or that that person is not treating you in the right way, or that he is not doing the right thing for himself—if I stay, then I am not doing the right thing for me. I love myself enough to walk away from that now.”

On the her marriage & belief in love:
“That was my biggest dream, and I really worked hard at it. We both did,” Jennifer Lopez tells Vanity Fair in her first interview since announcing that she and Marc Anthony are divorcing. Continue
