Tyler Perry’s latest television series features two of his most popular film characters, Marcus and Angela, from his Why Did I Get Married? film. Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White reprise their roles as the married couple and bring all their drama and dysfunction to the small screen. While TBS has ordered ten episodes of the show, if it launches successfully that order will hit 100. For Better or Worse is set to premiere November 23.

Yeah that’s my concern, loved them in WDIGM 1, got on my last nerves on 2 so a sitcom I don’t know if I could do that, but I love them as a couple and as actors. The fighting just becomes unrealistic after a while.

I totally agree – I think no other black director knows how to exploit the black community like Tyler Perry does. Spike Lee was on point when he said this about Tyler. While a lot of his typical cliche movies are entertaining to watch, the racial stereotypical undertones are disturbing. Why do we always have to be portrayed as angry, loud, bitter, hookers, drug addicted mothers, or lost children? While that seems to be a familiarity in a lot of our communities, it is NOT always the case. People don’t realize is, while we’re slapping our knees crackin’ up at his funny punchlines, and good looking celebrities portraying these characters in his films, the raw messages that it sends to non-African Americans is that we ALL are ghetto, dysfunctional, and uncouth! Good luck with that one!
Ummmm whether we wanna accept it or not that is what is actually happening in our black families. Whether it is that out men are going gay or its the plain fact that they are cheating and this is what it is. Plain and simple. Tyler is just expanding on it.

Talking/Yelling like that doesn’t even make any sense. Believe it or not, there ARE other ways to communicate. People who ALWAYS need to yell to get their point across are frustrated because they don’t know how to express their selves in other ways. If you have never seen examples of people who are not depicting what Mr. Perry is now showing – then you may need to expand the quality of people you are around. Not a diss…just a suggestion.

We haven’t even seen the show yet. Based on the movie these characters came from, and the trailer, I think it will definitely be better than the rest of the garbage (BBW, RHOA, ETC) on TV. Why don’t you wait until you see it to start judging it. Besides, everybody knows a couple like this. While it may not be to this extreme, everyone knows someone who is in a relationship that is clearly not healthy, but at least this couple is in counseling to work out their issues. I bet most of you guys complaining had no complaints when Married w/ Children was on tv.

@GETOVERIT – Tyler is doing nothing more than exploiting black folks, and capitalizing on it. While you made a point that most of us don’t complain about Married With Children, it is NOT the white race that needs to be showcased in a different light, they are already looked at as “holy” – for lack of better words.
It is Blacks who are stereotyped, judged, and are still dealing with racism in the media, social network, and even at work. So when a man has the power, and platform to showcase black people in another light, why not do it? It’s more about money than lifting our black people it seems. I’m not saying he needs to remake Roots or anything, and true, we all know a lot of angry black people/couples/family members, but this is his second small screen show, and it’s within the next corner of that “box” that he’s digging from.
I don’t think he’s that brilliant if you ask me, I would call him more of a hustla! He recycles the same mumbo-jumbo, puts a spin on it, and a pretty actor/actress carrying out the message.

Since I am one of the ones that immediately was turned off by the idea of a tv show with this couple maybe you are right that I should give it more of a chance. I can’t help but have an idea what it is going to be about from the loud angry trailer, to the loud angry couple throughout both movies.
I’ve stopped watching cable tv and don’t watch Basketball Wives or even know what the other shows you mentioned are. I also didn’t watch the Married with Children series.
I actually would agree with you, that maybe more people should give it a chance. I just hope if it is another opportunity to watch black people act crazy that people will turn the digital crack off. The best way to get over the buffoonery shows is to not watch them. Who knows, maybe those same actors could play in another Bill Cosby Show, Cosby Mysteries or even Everybody Hates Chris. The Bernie Mac show wasn’t bad either.

Aside from that little dramatic part in the middle where she called him a liar, I found everything else very funny. Especially the end where she is sitting calmly and saying. “Yeah…..and then what happens….and what did you do?” That was Hilarious. And how he sat dead still and looked to the side at her when Tyler suggested he share all of the bad things. That was funny. I like their comedic timing in the preview. So I would like to see the show itself. And I”m not a big fan of “House of Payne” and “Meet the Browns” except for an occasional episode here and there.

I agree. Our people are so damn sensitve. When a black celebirty is doing a movie or a tv show. Black people got the nerve to complain about it. These fools act like little kids. I’m guess their parents didn’t give them enough attention while growing up. The ones that are complaing about this show will probably end up watching it anyways. Because they know, they watch BBW Maimi,BBW LA, RHOA and Braxton Family Values(although that show is positive). Because it not always about us, white people act a fool too. I like thes two actors, i guess together they create this mad marriage…but this actress is married in real life and real laid back and in love with her husband. I cant imagine this on a series. Some of us have men that love and support us so well. I think the best dysfunctional dynamic ive seen was ‘every body hates chris’ mum…was a good blend…all in one.

I didn’t watch the trailer. I read a few comments and many of the folks said they liked the actors. So I decided to watch it. I must be missing something about these two. The acting is really fake. especially when the woman is screaming. IDK I just couldn’t buy it. Not only that but she literally lunges over to attack the man, Tyler Perry doesn’t do anything and just smiles away. Aren’t you gonna help that man? There are some more things that disturbed me, but I’ll leave it at that.

Will I be watching? No. I only watched half of… less than half of the trailer. All the screaming. The loud rude black couple comedy is almost offensive to me. It reminds me of a 22nd century version of Black Sambo or the mammy character. The only Caricatures I watch now are on the Boondocks.

I don’t get where all the negative comments are coming from. Their aren’t that many black casts/main characters on tv right now aside from reality shows {Tia & Tamara/ La La’s Full Court Life} I think it’s refreshing that there’s something else besides that on tv. I think it’s a positive image. The couple is married, they both have careers, and in their own way try to work out whatever problems they face. How could a show like that upset you?

10 or more years ago, networks like the WB (which later became the CW) existed and there was pool of black tv shows..”One on one”, “Malcolm & Eddie”, “Half & Half”, “The Wayans”, etc.. Today, those networks don’t exist anymore and there AREN’T ANY black shows on network TV. THE ONLY stations that do have black shows in their line-up is BET and TBS (thanks to Tyler Perry). It took BET YEARS to find a healthy medium that most were comfortable with. Many had issues with the fact that u cud go from watching music videos, to uncut after dark to praise the lord. From one extreme to the total opposite bk to bk. Today is prob the best programming line-up the network has ever had. But they have been established for a much longer time than Tyler Perry so give the man a chance. He’s growing as well. Look at where he started, his 1st play, his 1st film and then fast forward to For Colored Girls. House of Payne was his 1st TV show, then Meet the Browns which was better and now he’s introducing For Better or Worse which I believe will be even better than that! Both entities are growing and getting better but the bigger blessing is they’re supporting and displaying black shows! They’re keeping our faces out there!! Whether u all are completely satisfied or happy with the storylines or treatments is individual perspective. If it were up the mainstream networks, there wudn’t be any blogs to post comments on b/c there’d be no damn shows at all. They don’t want to promote, create, support, black shows! first off let’s keep it real people. Tyler Perry is a very tlaented person. His shows bring me constant laughter and joy. I am definetly looking forward to this newest entry in his long line of successes. Meet the Browns is my favorite show and Mr. Brown is the new Fred Sanford. To the person who agreed with Spike Lee get a life. Spike has not had a successful in movie in years and he is just pissed about Tyler Perry’s stealing his thunder. Spike should grow a few feet and hope that his beloved Knicks (god awful as they are) make the damn playoffs. Wow, my people can we give it a chance. I do agree that the latest offering from Mr. Perry left a lot to be desired (last movie). However, For Better or Worse, may just be funny. Hopefully, once Tyler gives TBS two, three successful shows he can go out of his comfort zone and produce another series similiar to Soul Food or The Cosby’s.
I think Tyler is very talented. We are as much to blame as him. Folks keep accepting the same Madea movies. The proof is at the box office (think of the $$$ success he has had). Just keep this in your mind. We should at the very least be glad just to be on TV. Until we continue to showcase our own images (positive or negative) we will have what we’ve always had and that is next to nothing.
I remember watching TV in the 70′s and in 2011 it is almost still as white. Until we STOP purchasing ALL the products from the TV shows (that is where we need to look first)we in my humble opinion need to just shut up. TV is driven my advertisment $$$$$ so stop purchasing all the products advertised for about 30 – 60 days things would turn around quickly.
To me it is plain and simple. If you DON’T like a show or producer DO NOT WATCH IT (DUH).
As for me I am going to give it a chance. Along with “Reed Between the Lines” coming to BET. If these shows are supported we will get more. I’ve had an idea for a show in my head for years.
