REMEMBERING AALIYAH: CL READERS’ FAVORITE MUSIC VIDEOS

August 25th, 2011

Over the past couple of days, we at Concrete Loop took a Twitter poll to see which Aaliyah videos our readers loved the most. Always commended for her innovative style, timeless concepts and great choreography, Aaliyah has been known for putting out great videos.

We’re posting, in order, your top three choices and two honorable mentions that were close runner-ups for favorites. I was really surprised that “4 Page Letter” didn’t make the cut!

1. “ROCK THE BOAT”

From her third album, Aaliyah and filmed right before her death, “Rock the Boat” was voted the #1 video. The clip was directed by Hype Williams.

2. “ARE YOU THAT SOMEBODY?”

Taken from the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack, “Are You That Somebody?” had everyone wanting to mimic Aaliyah’s moves. Directed by Mark Gerard, with choreography by close friend, Fatima Robinson.

3. “ONE IN A MILLION”

The title track from her 1996 sophomore set of the same title, check out the Paul Hunter-directed clip for “One In A Million.”

HONORABLE MENTIONS

“WE NEED A RESOLUTION”

Also directed by Paul Hunter, check out the futuristic first video from her last album, Aaliyah. A lot of directors and artists note that this video was dark and ahead of its time.

“MORE THAN A WOMAN”

This clip was shot in Los Angeles with director Dave Meyers two weeks before “Rock the Boat,” but was released afterwards. It features a cameo from English producer Mark Ronson.

“COME BACK IN ONE PIECE”

One of Angel’s favorites, “Come Back In One Piece” features DMX and is lifted from the Romeo Must Die soundtrack. This clip was filmed in Yonkers by director Little X.

I miss her. I remember that day when she died. I was sitting on the beach with my boyfriend at the time and my aunt called me asking if I’d heard the news. I made him rush home so I can hear it for myself. I couldn’t believe it. It felt as though I lost a friend, a sister or a cousin. You’ll never be forgotten. RIP baby girl.

Super surprised that “Try Again” wasn’t a fav or honorable mention! I was usually stunned/mesmerized by most of her videos, but I didn’t think she could top the “skirt/flamenco” scene in AYTS until I saw Try Again. B/c I remember being shocked Aaliyah wore a skirt (with high splits even!) in AYTS, but then to see her in Try Again…she changed her hair, her makeup was bold (and stunning), and her outfit was really sexier than anything she wore previously, yet still had her signature swag all over it. Last but not least, the dancing was tight.

One In A Million wasnt all that! Now I think More Than A Woman was terrific and innovative, that video was pure class and futuristic! She looked stunning and the outfits and moves were amazing! We Need A Resolution was edgy and stunning as well, very dark and ahead of its time, Rock The Boat was so pretty! Try Again also won her a VMA! She had great videos! My top 4!

I feel ya. It`s been years since I actually even sat down and listened to radio or watched music vids. The music does ‘NOTHING’ for me and I suspect the vids are still nothing more than visual madness that is utterly ‘DYSPEPSIA.’

Every year CL posts a tribute for Aaliyah, that is just AWESOME. She was one of the most humble down to earth artist ever and she was that way ALL THE TIME. Sadly we dont have humble artist like Aaliyah anymore. Still upset that we lost her.

AALIYAH FANS ARE F*CKING ANNOYING. HOW DO U KNOW SHE’LL STILL BE A BIG ARTIST IF SHE WAS ALIVE??
BRINGING OTHERS DOWN JUST SO U CAN PRAISE AALIYAH IS PATHETIC.
AND THERE IS ROOM FOR MANY ARTISTS TO SHINE AT ONCE. SO IT IS POSSIBLE THAT ALL 3 WOULD BE THE BIGGEST BLACK FEMALE ARTISTS RIGHT NOW.

I really truly miss this girl, she was humble, classy, very well grounded, when “Back and Forth” was released back in 1994, I was in gr 8, all the girls in the 8th grade dressed in the baggy pants and the bandana’s everyone loved her style, then when she started to dress as a lady it changed the game to a whole new level. Aaliyah was truly one of a kind, when she released “Rock The Boat” you can truly see her beauty, and that video was ahead of her time. R.I.P. Aaliyah, your truly ONE IN A MILLION!!!

Good video choices. More than a Woman is my favorite. Thinking about Aaliyah’s career she really had lots of hits. I can remember A LOT of aaliyah songs that were mainstream. She really was the total package. Good singer and excellent dancer. She died so young and she still had a huge impact on the music industry. She really was One in a Million. RIP Aaliyah aka Babygirl.

4 page letter is my all time favorite song & video.

I miss Aaliyah a lot. A few weeks ago asked me y do I have all these posters of her on my wall. She’s too young to understand and know what kind of person Aaliyah and what kind of impact she had on my life. Im an only child, so she’s like the sister I always wanted.

Aaliyah didn’t have to shake her butt, and dress all raunchy. She was all about talent. She had poise and grace and talent for days that many didn’t know about, which is y im a fan line I am. She was classy, smart and an incredible person. You will always be loved and remembered.

RTB made it to #1? I wasn’t expecting that because Liyah made better videos.

Are You That Somebody is the ish, but where is Try Again? That was one of her most creative videos ever.

I miss her style. She was sexy but never raunchy, sensual but never over the top. Everything about her was smooth, and to top it of she was actually a NICE person.

What I miss the most is that she was really going places when she died. She wouldve been Jada Pinkett-Smith’s part in the matrix movies. And I wish we had more music from her.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation however I find this topic to be actually something which I believe I’d by no means understand. It seems too complex and extremely huge for me. I’m taking a look ahead in your next put up, I will attempt to get the cling of it!
