‘ROUND THE WAY: TIMBALAND & MISSY ON WORKING W/ AALIYAH + CLIP OF UPCOMING AALIYAH SPECIAL ON BET

August 22nd, 2011

Although it feels like just yesterday, August 25th will mark the 10th year following the tragic passing of R&B singer Aaliyah. Check out this preview clip from Aaliyah: One In A Million, BET’s upcoming tribute to the late singer. In the video, Timbaland and Missy Elliott recall the very first time they learned that they would be working with Ms. Aaliyah Haughton after she heard and enjoyed a track demo made by them:

We did a record called “Sugar & Spice” that Timbaland and another young man took into Atlantic Records, and when they heard that record they liked the sound and it was something they had never heard before. So they said, ‘Let’s put you all in the studio with Aaliyah.’ And we were excited. [...] I gotta thank her [Aaliyah] because she heard the specialness in us. Because with “Sugar & Space” she said, ‘there’s something special about Timbaland and Missy…”

BET’s Aaliyah: One In A Million airs on Thursday, August 25 at 8PM EST/PST. VIDEO SNIPPET BELOW

    Stop it !

I don’t know if it’s just me, while I did enjoy her music and her acting skills. I just don’t see her relevance to the entertainment industry anymore, I mean I dont think she made that big of an inpact and didnt reach the heights for all the attention she is still receiving 10 years later. If we are honoring her as a human being, daughter, sister and girlfriend thats great. But as an artist i dont think she deserves it, for this long that is. I did love her for her time here but she is gone and there are other artist out here that could use Timberland and Missy’s creativity… I mean move on and get another artist to the heights you saw Aaliyah at. Please dont think I am in anyway trying to disrespect her or belittle the work she did when she was here.

As I do completely understand and respect your opinion, I have to strongly disagree. Aaliyah and her style of music served as a great inspiration for a lot of R&B artists (male and female) throughout this 10 years since her passing. In reference to relevance of today, she directly inspires Drake and even The Weeknd who are obviously extremely popular artists and essentially define a large part of what today’s music is (whether anyone likes it or not). Without her I doubt Drake would be the artist he is (melodically and lyrically) today. A lot of artists today sample her music as well so.. I definitely see her impact, I guess it where and how you’re looking :)

Why are they still talking about this w(hore)? When she was breathing no one paid her any mind but ever since she died people proclaim their love for her & claim how talented she was. The only talent she had was f**king for tracks & movie roles. Missy just misses her lover thats why she keeps harping & remembering Aaliyah.

@IDOMIND- As usual you still speak verbal diarrhea, don’t you have a life outside the computer as usual. You always spew the most idiotic verbal diarrhea on CL. You must love the talents of Missy and Aaliyah because when someone talks about them, you talk. Your a sad sad little person, you have to speak ill of the dead, your pathetic and a troll on CL, and everytime you talk everyone disses you. What you should do is to see a doctor and fix your life, because right now you look pathetic.

@STLOPINION:It`s great to see that there are astute people on this site. There are artists that I don`t particularly care for but I never find the time for such VILE comments and outright hatred. Hopefully no one will take the bait. I, for one, think Aaliyah was very talented as well as beautiful. She had a beautiful smile.

While most would argue that Aaliyah was Dame Dash’s blood sacrifice, I’m a firm believer that Timbaland was the one who gave her up, considering his career has exploded in astronomical proportions since Aahliyah’s passing…

Been waiting years for this! I cried as if I lost a sister when Aaliyah died, not to mention I was getting on a plane the day the news came out. I was devastated. As a teenager you want someone to look up to, and Aaliyah was that for me…her style, her class, her music was so dope…Regardless of how short her career was, her music still rocks harder than most of the R&B out now. Gotta love Aaliyah!

I’m watching the special on Thursday, Aaliyah stature in music was a big impact in the 90′s and she was before her time, in which during the time she did her last video Rock The Boat, it was new and refreshing, she wasn’t scandalous showing nakedness in her video, she was enjoyed doing music period. she was very close to her family especially her mom and her brother was very well grounded. Gone to soon.

Aaliyah shall always remain someone special to me. Musically I grew up listening to her so her loss was close to home for me and I really studied her life, vocal range and everything lol you can’t sing an Aaliyah song with the wrong notes….boo bye no not a babygirl song but I miss her and she’ll always be one in a million. Don’t compare babygirl because her shine was dimmed too soon so to compare her to Beyonce or anyone else or to say she wouldn’t be relevant is just stupid. Aaliyah will be remember for who she was and her legacy will live through her fans…always.

One of the last true talented pop/rnb artists. She changed the game in many ways and her star was gone too soon. If she were here, I doubt some of the cat poppers who call themselves dancing and singing wouldn’t be that revelent today. RIP Aliyah. That is all.

I was always a fan, but didn’t become a big one until One in a Million when her style/swag really developed into being well…”one in a million” :-) I always kind of glossed over her first album although I did like the singles released from it. Recently I gave her entire 1st album a listen and I still don’t think it’s the best one, but I found one positively beautiful gem on there – “Street Thing”. If anyone says Aaliyah couldn’t “sang”, just listen to that. She could. I still say to this day her best album was her last (“Aaliyah”). It was definitely ahead of it’s time. I am thankful for the work she left behind. When I’m in a bad mood, I’ll listen to her music or watch some videos of hers on Youtube and it does cheer me up. You can’t help but smile with her. She was dope!

I will never forget, I was in my barracks room watching tv when it came across the screen that Aaliyah had been killed in that plane crash. Being as though she was literally just on 106 & Park that previous week, the news rocked me to the core. Who knows what she would have been today at 32..Aaliyah you are definitely One In A Million!

Shout out to Missy & Tim for always showing love to the Babygirl!

Aaliyah in the flesh was imperfect as WE ALL ARE. However, she tried her best in her mere 22 yrs of life on earth to live her life as a humble & loving person. With that, she shared her God given talent(she was absolutely blessed her with artistic gifts & talents) with this world. If you didn’t & or don’t care for or appreciate her talents or her personality antemortem, for whatever reason, you had/have the right to refrain from entertaining anything pertaining to Aaliyah the artist & or person excluding the art. However there are many people such as myself, who do love & appreciate who Aaliyah was, what she contributed, & what she left. For many of us, Aaliyah is a very sensitive and emotional topic.

There are always going to be people in the world who thrive on and spread negativity. There are various people such as artists & etc, who have certain characteristics or attributes that I don’t like or care for. However, I find it unnecessary, unproductive, and negative for me or anyone else, to share these feelings publicly & or to dwell on these feelings internally. Have I ever? Yes, but I try extremely hard, as I gain wisdom, to refrain from doing so. What purpose does it serve?? Does it help change the world for the better?? If one does feel that it serves the world in some positive manner to share such opinions & ideas, there is a way to go about articulating these w/o judgement & negativity. However if that isn’t the case, why bother doing so?? In a case such as this, sharing one’s dislike, & or lack appreciation for a particular individual, almost never benefits anyone! It only brings forth more negative energy to/in a world consumed with negativity!

Long ago a phrase was coined & it still remains relevant and beneficial: “If you have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all”.

Again, thank you Missy & Tim for always loving Aaliyah!

    With Aaliyah in our Hearts…
