During their WBC welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday (September 17), Floyd Mayweather Jr. knocked out Victor Ortiz in the fourth round.
The controversial KO occurred following the temporary halt to the fight after 24-year-old Ortiz head-butted 34-year-old Mayweather. Ortiz came over and apologized with a kiss and a hug while referee Joe Cortez deducted a point. As they broke from the embrace, Mayweather tagged Ortiz with a left and floored him with a right.
Following the fight, Mayweather said, “We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break. In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times.” Ortiz offered a different point of view: “I took the break by the referee and I obeyed exactly as I was told. And then, boom, he blindsided me.”
Mayweather then engaged in a verbal confrontation with 80-year-old HBO announcer Larry Merchant (see video below), who told the prize fighter, “I wish I was 50 years younger, and I’d kick your ass!” Mayweather remains undefeated after 42 fights.
