CL TOPIC: FLOYD MAYWEATHER DEFEATS ORTIZ, AMID CONTROVERSY – WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

September 19th, 2011

During their WBC welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday (September 17), Floyd Mayweather Jr. knocked out Victor Ortiz in the fourth round.

The controversial KO occurred following the temporary halt to the fight after 24-year-old Ortiz head-butted 34-year-old Mayweather. Ortiz came over and apologized with a kiss and a hug while referee Joe Cortez deducted a point. As they broke from the embrace, Mayweather tagged Ortiz with a left and floored him with a right.

Following the fight, Mayweather said, We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break. In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times.” Ortiz offered a different point of view: “I took the break by the referee and I obeyed exactly as I was told. And then, boom, he blindsided me.

Mayweather then engaged in a verbal confrontation with 80-year-old HBO announcer Larry Merchant (see video below), who told the prize fighter, “I wish I was 50 years younger, and I’d kick your ass!” Mayweather remains undefeated after 42 fights.

    They touched gloves… AND in real life, when folks take cheap shots at you, you don’t have to touch gloves or hear bells ringing to pop em just so they get the message. It’s boxing, they’re physically fighting for a living, I don’t expect much.

    CHEAPSHOT

    Everyone’s saying that Ortiz headbutt was the reason Mayweather took that cheap shot. Ortiz paid for it and had a point deducted. They were still ‘making up’ in the ring, ref wasn’t watching, and then Mayweather threw the 2 punches and blindsided Ortiz. Look at the video, the ref is looking like “uh whaaaa?” Mayweather probably would have won if the fight went to decision, but Ortiz gave his ass a run for his money. I didn’t like Mayweather to begin with, now I can’t stand him. And him running off at the mouth @ Larry Merchant – unnecessary. You don’t do shyt like that unless you know you were wrong. Yeah so what he’s getting his money, he’s still a bad human being.

      Get offline with the sissy BS. This is boxing not kickball. 2 apologies were more than enough. The ref CLEARLY said “let’s go” to the boxers which means continue fighting. Victor (who was getting his ass handed to him) wanted to hug again (for the 3rd time). Floyd Got back to doing what he was in the ring to do “FIGHT”. There was absolutely “NO CONTROVERSY” it’s go hard or go home. That headbutt could’ve cause serious injury and a message needed to be sent that that would not be tolerated at all. End of story. The far better fighter won!!!!!!!!

      @CHEAPSHOT

      Who’s the “they” that were still making up? So someone can shoot you in your leg on purpose, and because they immediately apologize, you’re supposed to accept that? Ortiz hit Floyd with a battering ram headbutt, knew he was wrong, and his f@ggot a$$ actually kissed Floyd before the point was deducted. The referee said “time in”. If this dude Ortiz wants to stand there looking sideways with his hands down like he’s waiting for the bus, that’s his problem. Hands down, man down. Boxing is a brutal sport. Even in football, you play until you hear a whistle. If your opponent is not on point, that is his problem. The issue that many people have with Floyd Mayweather is that he is a black male with a RULING CLASS MENTALITY, which most black people do not have. Larry Merchant’s decrepit devil a$$ actually wanted to call Floyd a n*gger, and that if it was 50 years ago, he would’ve lynched him, but he couldn’t say that on tv lol.

      Excuse me @ Cheapshot sorry but ummmm…he should have “gotten knock the fuck out”. The fight was going pretty good until home skillet headbutted him. That’s when Floyd showed him wassup. That part was funny as hell when Larry said “If I was 50 years younger I’d whoop yo ass” then he said “I’d probably couldn’t whoop him, but I would sure try”. LOL

    Floyd Mayweather is the modern day Jack Johnson…..a complete pariah for both his extreme skill level and his refusal to subjugate himself to mainstream (white) America. Had the opposite happened in the fight and Floyd were knocked out for headbutting Ortiz, no one would have cared. The infatuation with Mayweather’s unbeaten record is a manifestation of the lust to see a black male “humbled”.

    NO CONTROVERSY!!! If you ask me Ortiz took himself out of the fight because he was so bummed by the cheapshot headbutt, and he kept apologizing. “Dag dude you apologized twice, let it go, yall are fighting” I bet that’s what Ortiz’s corner was saying. Ultimately the ref hit his hands, time in, lets fight. Mayweather did absolutely nothing wrong. He won fair and square.

    All around bullshizz fight! We expect more from Money may as the pound for pound best fighter. Granted that headbutt was blatant and bullcrap, why lower yourself to a lesser fighter. You were already on your way to an easy W. And flipping out on old ass Larry Merchant made you look worse. Be the bigger man!

      @REGG

      You sound like a house negro……all that “be the bigger man” nonsense is why the black man gets no respect. You have a slave mentality. There is a reason why Larry Merchant made that face when Mayweather got up in him. That was shock that a black male dared answer him back. This is a fight, not two-hand touch football. This dude Ortiz was trying to kiss Mayweather like they were playing spin the bottle. Get the hell out of here. Hands down, man down.

      Judah..and you sound like the typical “white man holding me back” negro! Instead of being humble and educated .. would rather see black men act like clowns and shuck and jive. I didn’t give Ortiz a pass, he was wrong on all counts. But if your a veteran boxer who is the best of the best … why lower yourself to a dude that’s not on your level? Ever see MJ do some shit like that? Or Jay-Z respond to young thundercats taking shots at him?? No! He’s bigger than that

      @REGG

      Lmao, you’d be the first one to jump on a caucasian’s side if you witness any form of altercation between a so-called caucasian and a so-called black person just on general principles due to your Martin Luther King programming. Are you really “educated”???? The “white man” can’t be holding Mayweather down because he’s making 70 million dollars for this fight, and he certainly cannot hold me down because the Most High is my power lol. I don’t know who you’re talking about when you say “MJ”, so if you’re speaking about Michael Jordan, Jordan did anything to win within the rules, and what Mayweather did was within the rules. Jay-Z is irrelevant, and you sound simple for bringing him up. Maybe boxing is too intense a sport for you. What comes to my mind is an interview that Muhammad Ali did with Howard Cosell after he fought Chuck Wepner. Wepner hit him with rabbit punches and Ali responded with rabbit punches of his own. Ali said that since Wepner fought him dirty, he fought him back dirty. You should let someone grab you by the back of your shoulders and pull you in as they ram the crown of their head into your face. I want to see how much decorum you’ll have smh & lol.

      Yous sound like a idiot! Taking the white man’s side? Since when is having class and poise about race? It’s sad the way your brain works. The white man is out to get me wah wah wah!! I’m a Mayweather fan… so I believe he shouldn’t have to fight “dirty” to get a W. Ortiz obviously saw his only way to compete was to cheat. Money may being the experienced and better fighter should have recognized that and continued to whoop his ass like he was doing. It was well within the rules but it was a bitch move… and you can’t deny that.

      @Regg: How many educated boxers do you know? Do you know what fighters do? Do you realize what could’ve happened if that head would’ve went into Floyd’s eyes instead of his chin? Have you seen the HUGE knot on the back of Floyd’s head from being hit in the back of the head which is illegal? Put all of that with a commentator that always has something slick or sarcastic to say to Floyd and other black fighters and you will get why Floyd had enough and blew up. Sometimes you have to let a dude know that he is out of line and I bet things will improve because of Floyd calling Merchant out.

      @REGG

      Floyd did continue to whoop his ass lol. I have no idea what you’re talking about, and neither do you. This is not a controversial issue at all. The only reason that people are talking about it is because it is Mayweather and people do not like him. The HBO commentators are anti-Mayweather and they heavily influence the viewing audience. Had that been Pacquiao that knocked someone out after being headbutted, people would be talking about what a great warrior he is. Guaranteed. If Mayweather really lacked “class and poise”, he would’ve hit Ortiz right after he was butted before the referee could break them. You’re a simpleton and a victim of mind control.

    Until Floyd fights Pac, these other fights just don`t matter to me. Personally, I think Floyd is ducking Pac before a punch is even landed. If he`s the best ever, and the best pound for pound, then take on ALL challengers. For my money, ‘Sugar’ Ray Robinson was the best. Even Ali acknowledged Sugar Ray was his idol and also the best. Ali is 1B, weight class not withstanding. For those of you who are unfamiliar with ‘Sugar’ Ray, go to YouTube and search some of his fights…lightening speed and could knock out opponents with a single punch with the power that he displayed.

    Peace

      I would expect a more learned and astute comment than that from you bruh. Former heavyweight champ Michael Moorer, who used to work in Pacquiao’s gym, is the one who told the Mayweathers that Pacquiao is on steroids. They did not pull that out of thin air. You should ask yourself why Pacquiao suffers from acid reflux severe enough to be hospitalized before all his recent fights. Research “acid reflux and steroid use” and you will have your answer. Contrary to popular reports, Pacquiao has NEVER agreed to FULL RANDOM Olympic-style blood testing. What his team has done is agreed to terms that were pulled off the table long ago, while indirectly lying to the public. Bob Arum is Pacquiao’s boss, and Arum (quiet as kept) also has Larry Merchant (among many other boxing reporters)on his payroll, which is why Merchant says bad things about Mayweather whenever he can. Floyd Mayweather is the smartest businessman in sports history, and is hated for it because he happens to be a black man. Don’t drink the kool-aid and jump on the bandwagon. In regards to Ray Robinson and Ali, great fighters but their defense was not on Mayweather’s level at all.

    When you are in the middle of a boxing match the cardinal rule is to protect yourself at all time. The Ref gave the signal to contiue the fight and Ortiz decides he wants to apologize for the head but….please. He was getting his ass whooped, which is why headbutted Mayweather in the first place. I don’t see any unsportmans like conduct, nor do I think he sucker punched him. Save your apologies for after the fight. When you are in the ring, your supposed to be hyped up in a zone with your adrenaline rushing…not trying to make an apology in the middle of an active round. Get out of here.

    man mayweather knows he was wrong, he dude when he wasn’t looking and everybody thats says it was a fair fight is just as stupid as he is. sometimes we don’t understand that sometimes they let us win the small battles so they can have the wars, watch how this effects him getting into the hall of fame. i know it shouldn’t matter but it will just like barry bonds never found guilty of anything and the home run king but will never make it into the hall of fame. mayweather will make it but not on his first time.and they will blame it on him not being a try professional and ducking pac-man.

      Bruh it’s not about “small battles and wars”. The people who are in power will never like or accept you smh. Some of you negroes just don’t get it. You’re fighting a fabricated battle for acceptance and equality that will never end because you cannot reach that goal. You are either in power or you are a slave. I’ve seen Mayweather be nice to Larry Merchant while Merchant was blatantly verbally attacking him. There’s only so much that a man can tolerate. Anyone who knows boxing knows that Mayweather is an all time great in the ring, so it is irrelevant when the white man decides to allow him in.

    First Ortiz was head butting the entire fight!! Second Ortiz jumped up and head butted that man and got of three punches, with one landed!! Ortiz apologized five freaking times so when it was time to fight they touch gloves and Floyd had his gloves up ready to fight…. Ortiz still trying to apologize after he did five times so Floyd two pieced him!! So all you people who saying it was dirty……slap yourselves becuase its principle!! I do see a rematch but for what Floyd was going to win anyway he just did sooner than later.
