MUSIC VIDEO: FRANK OCEAN – “THINKING ABOUT YOU”

September 15th, 2011

Singer/songwriter Frank Ocean dropped a new music video for his track, “Thinking About You”. The low-key Odd Future member dropped his version of the song shortly before Roc Nation’s Bridget Kelly released hers.

Check out the visuals for the chill track below. It has a random, yet interesting story plot…

Yes, I must say very random indeed! But for some weird reason, I like that he didn’t go the expected route. I think it would be dope though, if he would shoot several videos for this record (kinda like Kanye), just to see how different visuals would go w/ the song. Just a thought.

SN: i love how mysterious he is & how he literally ignores the media. I find Frank that much more fascinating.

Actually I re-watched It and I think it’s the nurse[Frank Ocean] Telling a story to the boy.. But as far as the connection from song to video.. I think it’s about the fight to get someone you once loved back.. Frank Ocean is amazing with symbolism in his music… Over a lot of peoples heads though. Only the story being told is pertaining to the song.. The characters are merely that, characters. Its Franks story, being told to the boy. They are the same people because its how the boy is visualizing it to whats happening using real life comparisons. It’s crazy how he can make a song so far out of the box and yet its still beautiful.. Its like hes forcing you to think lol

Frank Ocean plays Lucifer in this video, believe it or not, the “healer” (doctor). He is instructing the boy in witchcraft and it’s powers to heal by going into the spirit world (the woman’s psyche) and healing the woman. If you notice, there is a dreamcatcher in the window of her hospital room. This is why the woman is having a dream in which the boy, as a grown man, is trying to use magic to save her life until he finds a talisman that enables hm to give his life energy to her and allow her to live. That is why when she wakes up he possesses a ring that has the same amulet that was used to save her in the “dream”.

@Judah how in the world did you interpret all that? I understood the fact that the meteor like ball symbolized life and the man passed it on to the woman so she could live but the rest I was kind of lost. How was Frank playing Lucifer??? Its amazing how you deciphered all of that from watching the video because it was some what ambiguous.

@Judah…This video has spiritism in it so yes I believe ur interpretation…

@ Judah… You hit the nail on the head son! DAMN. It looked to me like Frank (the devil) at the beginning saw what the boy was dealing with. So he was offering him a deal. Offer up HIS soul for his mother’s life. The ring is a symbol of the debt he owes to the healer (Frank). The debt will likely be collected when he reaches the age of the young man in the “dream state”.

Yes Judah, that intepretation is amazing, almost liek you pulled it out of your ass ….

It’s funny how people who belive all of the illuminati stuff , critisize people for a sheepish mentality but also exhibit one themselves ….tell us more oh great Judah, I need to know what to think and how to feel …..

So this is my first time properly watching this video and I understood what was going on, it was just a little confusing. This video is a bit of a mind teaser for me. Frank is kinda giving us space to interoperate this video the way we want to, because it’s not so clear. So when @Judah explained this, it made sense, I can believe that.

This reminds me of a vid by the roots that I’m still trying to figure out. I didn’t realize this song was written for BK, ok her version does it justice. Couldn’t figure out why folks were so hype over it but now I’m diggin it.

I haven’t heard Bridgette Kelly’s version, only this one and I truly ADORE that song. I heard it a few weeks ago and was hoping it was going to be a single. Still love the song but that video gets a big “What the hell….??” from me. Sometimes I think people try to be weird just for the sake of being weird.

Franky Franky Franky, you’re approaching dangerous territory. Sometimes attempting to be eclectic just comes off as weird. This is one of those times. Mr. Ocean, it doesn’t always work. Just ask Tony Rich, Raphael Saadiq and an entire host of other artists. I can appreciate an artist that will take a good walk on the path least taken, I just hope that the artist can appreciate the fans that may walk the well worn path more often. Keep on with the good music Brother, your mixtape was my ish last summer.

Shut up. You just like holding black people back.

People like you are the reason we can’t get ahead in our own communities.

Stop trying to marginalized an artist. He doesn’t exist for you.

You should appreciate any artist that comes along.

Just because you listens to someone’s work and are a fan doesn’t mean you get to direct their work.

Fall back. You’re stepping into dangerous territory.

@ CUZ… This site allows me to give my opinion so I did. The reality is that I am a huge fan of quality music, and I just so happen to think that Franky here has a gift. It only seems to me that his videos haven’t matched up to his caliber of music yet. Is that so wrong Cuz??? I AM entitled to MY OWN opinion. If you actually take the time to read my original post and not just the first line you will see that I am merely hoping that a talented artist will avoid some of the well documented failures of his R&B predecessors. The reality is that I think the song is GREAT, but the video was a bit weird and lacking (I watched it 3 times to be sure I wasn’t missing something vital). I am in no way attempting to direct his work, just making an observation. If you don’t share my opinion, then that’s cool. Go kill yourself. Who cares? And how exactly am I stepping into dangerous territory? LOL… Is that an internet threat? Oooohh, I’m shaking. No seriously, I’m shaking my head at you.

I agree with Cuz completely. And I’d like to add that I’m almost certain that people are assigning forced, completely random, unintentional meanings and symbolism to the video as they always do on black blog sites and like they did to Kanye West. I’m not saying don’t have your own interpretation but take the video for what it is and don’t assert the symbolism you found (Only demonic people always have satanic thoughts and seem to always associate everything with satan and demons no matter how forced the concept is, -cough- Judah; so keep that in mind, people) as though it’s fact. You could at least say “I think ….”

Ok, I understand using different formats and concepts in a video, (Kanye West is good at this), but this is wayyy off. I was actually looking forward to him making a video for this song, because it’s constantly on repeat. His video Novacane was crazy too, but atleast it went with the song. I couldn’t even listen to the music while watching the video, it felt like I was watching a movie with the volume turned down and listening to the song simultaneously. It just all felt very werid ( much like him)..but not in a good way, I know that this is what Frank is going for though, he wants us to think, WTF..but sometimes making visuals like this messes up the whole feel and vibe of the song, it defintely did that for me. On another note, I like the visuals and story that I think he is trying to convey in the video…just absolutely not for this song. I hope he provides some type of explanation for why he chose this concept.

Frank is eclectic & it works well for him (He’s part of Odd Future- duhh.) But I was expected to be thrown off by the video. Very interesting-yet mind boggling. I loved the song before I seen the video though. GOLF WANG

I thought the video was malfunctioning, for at least the first 30 seconds. I guess I’m not deep enough to appreciate the video’s concept.

    Interesting, to say the least.

Why does it always have to end up being about race? Why can’t he just be an artist, who interprets his art his way? I personally believe his music has and will continue to cross and reach a diverse fan base and he doesn’t need to appeal to any particular race in a visual to aid him with that. Yes I was confused, but I’m pretty sure that confusion is not just limited to one race; you have to understand his thinking to understand his concepts.

Frank, boy, girl are in reality and other boy girl, medicine
man are in Boys imagination. The plots are the same. Boy takes girl to someone
that can help…”Doctor” . ”Doctor” in reality tells Boy what is happening hypothetically
for comfort, ”Doctor” in imagination is giving boy strength to save girl.
EVERYTHING is parallel until the star falls. The star represents the
life/sacrifice/boys-life-to girl/imagination…. Anyway, the medicine man gives
boy the power to go capture AND carry the life to his sister. Boy goes to
capture the life and tries to bring it to girl only for everyone to find out it
is his life that he is sacrificing and giving to the girl. In the end, it appears
that he is too late and he has run out of time even after the ball drops to the
girl BUT he is JUST in time. The thing is that he has giving whatever life he
had left in himself to the ball that has transferred to the girl.

All this is his imagination though. This is only what he
wishes he could do. In reality, the doctor and the boy are merely waiting the
fate of the loved one… and the pearl
ring is all he has to bring the two worlds together.

I stated before that this Frank Ocean character as well as his crew, Odd Future & Tyler the Creator are heavily into the occult & Sat.anic worship and are quite open about it. Listen to their lyrics. He has written for most of the mainstream artists out now so is really deep in this mess. Christopher Breaux knows exactly what he is doing and him & his crew often perform intoxicated & high of drugs but yet still attract mindless sheep.

No they aren’t lol oh my god. Frank is admittedly Christian and speaking of these supposed lyrics, the first line of his song “We All Try” makes that point pretty obvious. if you take those other lyrics seriously you’re exactly the type of people they’re mocking by saying those things. You sound so silly right now, it’s unreasonable. They are all atheist and don’t believe in anything especially not what you’re talking about. 99% chance that you’ve never listened to any of their songs and are just typing this based on things you’ve read online lol this comment is sooooo embarrassingly stupid. And of course, I just checked and it’s from none other than “IDOMIND”

It astonishes me how everyone is deceived into believe that Frank Ocean portrays the devil himself. I actually believe that as complex as Frank Ocean normally is, in this video, he is simply the doctor who’s explain to the child the love story of his mother and father, or how his father died saving his mother and his own life. I believe that the child in the video was life (forever) the man son, his offspring; his genetics will live on thru his son forever. As Frank was explaining the story, the mother was also recanting her memories of that faithful night thru a dream, therefore, explaining the dream catcher at the window. I personally believe that she was pregnant when he was dragging her to an Indian healer, who is well equipped to help in a birth of a child. Also, I believe that there was complication during birth. The ring she has in her possession towards the end is near and dear to her because that the last she remember of her husband before he died; she will have the memories of him forever by keeping this ring that symbolizes his sacrifice of his own life for his son and wife.

BAM!!!!!! i’m feeling you Doc! i was somewhat feeling the same thing. & also it could have been that!!!!!! (wait for it). if the father dead before the boy was born then maybe Frank was explaining to the boy how he was procreated w/out telling him about sexual procreation. (you know, kinda like the stork brings he baby) i’m feeling you DOC!!! youbetta say that!

i just want to know why is it that Frank is being analyzed as lucifer. ok, there was a witchdoctor there using homeopathic remedies to heal the woman BUT does that make homeopathis medicine demonic. i want to assume that he may have been praying as well. so is that also to say that when you go to a church & the pastor prays & lays hands that it is a demonic force of healing? can Frank Ocean please tell us the analyzation of HIS video. thnx

Now I took a slightly different way. I agree with that we are inside of the little boy’s imagination. I, however, thought that the boy was the daughter of that injured/sick woman. I also thought that the older man was actually his father. The doctor was telling the boy that story to explain how the father gave up his life to save his wife, maybe by some sort of a transplant. In the end, he does transfer over his life to the woman he loves. I find it kind of creepy to think that the older man is actually the little boy, and the girl is actually his mom or sister taking the lyrics into account. The lyrics suggest an intimate relationship, not a mother-son relationship. Anyways it again makes sense with the lyrics because of showing how much he truly loves the woman, as Frank is singing about.
