Oakland’s own Goapele premieres the video for her new single, “Play”, from her latest album, Break of Dawn.
Goapele says of the album: “One of my goals for Break of Dawn was to be more uninhabited. I came into this business as a young woman who wanted to lay a foundation of musical integrity and now I’m more willing to share my sensuality as well. I realize that it’s possible to be both complex and provocative.” Break of Dawn is set to be released Oct. 24.
I love Goapele. I like this song. Think I’ll need to here it a few more times though. Does this video remind anyone else of Aaliyah – to me it kinda has that vibe?

I really like her in a music sense. However, I am not feeling the cornrolls in a style of a horn. The image is NOT consitent with the songs. Please get rid of the hair. She is such a beautiful soulful women.
I AGREE 100% that something is inconsistent but I think its her voice. I love her but the whole overtly sensual sound doesn’t match her style of vocals. Its sounds like a forced psuedo-raspiness that’s not sexy but THIRSTY!! Someone get her some water for her vocal chords AND for this hot mess that someone’s media handler suggested!!! She could be a sex kitten if she wants to but not like THIS. OMG im so sad.
Maybe she’s not trying to be a sex kitten, but is just singing a song/doing a video that represents HER sexuality, as she sees/experiences it?
