Monica just released a brand new video for her first single, “Anything (To Find You),” but she’s already gearing up her second single from her upcoming seventh studio album, New Life.
“Until It’s Gone,” features Monica singing over the classic Phyllis Hyman sample, “I Don’t Wanna Lose You.” The new album is slated to hit stores November 29th.

I’m a Phyllis Hyman fan too. I love Monica’s voice. I love her use of the sample. She’s definitely made the Phyllis Hyman classic more accessible to younger audiences. It’s too bad the richness of the song might otherwise go unheard by young people.

I agree AURA85 and everyone else. I have been listen to this song all day, I’m glad it doesn’t sound like “Love All Over Me” and “Here I Am” so those will remain my jams from Still Standing. I’m so excited about this album after hearing this and the fact she said this album there is a whole lot of sanging on it. It’s amazing how on this blog and her site she is getting rave reviews for the song and on one of my other favorite blogs they are ripping her a new one for this song, I wonder why that is because she is about to get some credit from the industry for this effort in my opinion.

Its refreshing to hear REAL R&B not all the techno/eurodance BS that’s ruining R&B. Sorry but I prefer to hear someone SING not selling their souls to what the industry/radio wants to project as what’s hot. That shit will fade away like any other fad. You cant take away real talent like Monica.

Monica did not steal “Silly” by Denicee Williams, do you know who remade it first- 1998 artist called Taral Hicks, made a video and sample the track before Monica, then Monica revamp the track for “Everything to Me”. The Phyllis Hyman track was orginally by the Spinners 1975, then The Surpremes did it in 1976, then Phyllis Hyman did in 1977, so in reality, it’s not her song, its the Spinners. So people before you talk, do RESEARCH!!!

Eh. It’s ok. I love Phyllis Hyman’s I Don’t Want To Lose You. Leave the sampling to the rappers. She already did Silly, Who Shot Ya. I see the formula, but no. It’s just ok.
I WISH THAT MONICA WOULD STOP USING SAMPLES IN HER MUSIC…however I LOVE this song. The words are great. This is a huge step in the right direction. But I really wish producers would stop giving her sample music.

You can’t blame her, blame the producers… And most songs these days are sampled whether it be the melody, beat, or lyrics. Just half the time we don’t know that it’s sampled.

Everything to Me was # 1 for SEVERAL weeks.. By MOST accounts, it was a success. She even got a Grammy Nomination for it. Its not like she is doing a cover of the old songs… I mean, do people always have to find something to complain about. I mean this song is HOT. Truthfully, as legendary as Phyllis Hyman was MOST won’t even know this was a sample.
Its a sign of creativity when one can take a sample like this and create something so great. You all act like she samples songs throughout her entire album. SMH
1 or 2 samples definitely is not a problem. Focus on the song and the fact that she is bringing another HIT.

Monica vocals are breath taking….When listening to this record it brings back memories of a previous relationship and I garantee this record is definitely something alot of people can relate too. Its great to hear a true R&B artist like Monica sing with raw emotion and soul despite what other artist are singing about. Music, is timeless, music can be recreated, reinvented and sampled. Its not a big deal, real music lives in Real R&B singers regardless if its a sample or not.
I don’t understand when some certain artists sample music everyone complains, but other artists does the same thing everyone praises, are you kidding me?? Good example: Kanye West: he samples from Chaka Khan, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, no one complains, now Monica does it, everyone is having a hissy fit. Yes it’s different artists and different music, but they sample!! Let me tell you something, all the old artists from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s beats were all sampled, from Marvin Gaye to Ashford and Simpson, so I don’t know why everyone is shocked, at the end of the day, its feel good music right?? In the 60s, most artists sampled the 50s and the 40s music to have the sound for the 60s and 70s right? 80s and 90s they go back and sample the 60s and 70s right? People watch this documentary called ” RIP ! : A remix manifesto, that will tell you how samples comes to be. So people stop having a double standard with certain artists.

Nice song! I just expect more from her at this point. I feel her music is just ok enough to get by..its not just awesome! Ever since After the Storm..her music seems to have step down a level. She is a great artist..i want more memorable performances and songs from her..be more creative and take more risks, just don’t do whats safe all the time! Can we all wait for her album to come out, just because she put out two songs that were samples doesn’t mean that a whole album will be a sample. The songs were produced by Missy, if you watch Monica on BET, she said she released this song to give her FANS something to listen to since her album got pushed back again. She never said this was her second single. Also if we recall, Everything to Me was a sample but Love All Over Me was an original song. We haven’t heard her album so we don’t know if she has PUSHED herself out of her comfort zone because Nobody has heard her NEW MUSIC besides these two songs, which both were produced by Missy but if you a fan and you’ve been following you know that she HAS stepped out her comfort zone and worked with many other producers for this album besides Polo, Missy, and B Cox. She has showed some other producers that she has been grinding with.
