Despite serious doubts about his conviction, the state of Georgia executed 42-year-old Troy Davis on Wednesday. Davis, who maintained his innocence until the end, told the family of Mark MacPhail that he was not responsible for the officer’s death and did not have a gun at the time. According to reports, he asked for mercy for those about to kill him and asked his friends and supporters to continue working to get to the truth of officer MacPhail’s death. Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m. ET.
Throughout the day, Davis’s attorneys and supporters called on various courts to intervene, with the Supreme Court ultimately rejecting a stay which delayed the execution, originally scheduled for 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, Davis met with Wende Gozan Brown, Media Relations Director of human rights organization Amnesty International on behalf of the Abolish the Death Penalty Campaign. Davis asked that the following message be delivered:
“The struggle for justice doesn’t end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davises who came before me and all the ones who will come after me. I’m in good spirits and I’m prayerful and at peace.”
Officer MacPhail’s family expressed a similar sentiment. Following news of Davis’s death, CNN interviewed his mother, Anneliese MacPhail, who said, “It sounds awful, but it’s kind of a relief that it’s over for me now. In my mind, [justice] has been served. There is no reason to celebrate or do anything because it is not good for both families. I’m sure his family is suffering terribly right now, too. But that’s the way he did it, and that’s the way it ends now. It’s not our doing.”

We DON’T know if he was innocent or guilty, just because his guilt could’nt be proven 100% doesn’t make him innocent…AND have we missed the part in the story where it has been stated he alledgedly shot a man in the face prior to the accusations of him shooting the police officer. I don’t believe he should have been put to death, he pratically served a life sentence while waiting to be executed…but am I convinced that he was innocent?…NO! What innocent man, the only innocent man was the cop who got shot by this guy. Troy Davis was guilty if not of the actual murder he was complicit in the events that led to it. Wow. I know both families are suffering but for the mother to say justice was served. Really? This doesn’t bring your son back. This doesn’t help or make the situation any better. Clarence Thomas signed his death papers and he had a jury of seven blacks and five whites. We cannot say that race was the main factor in this injustice. Davis was put to death due to his involvement with not one, but two shootings involving the same gun in the same night. Both instances he was identified as a person on the scene and as far as I know, he never denied his association with the others person(s). All he said was he was not the trigger man and they didn’t have the gun. Should he have been put to death? No. Was he guilty of something? Yes, but association should not warrant his life be taken. The police were looking to close the case and Davis was the unlucky individual who took the wrap for everything. The system failed him but he is the only one to blame for his situation, sad as it may be.

Really Hector? When you’re convicted on eyewitness testimony and most of that is recanted. When ballistics is shaky. They pursued the death penalty because Troy Davis was a person they could dehumanize especially in the context of killing a police officer. He had a crappy lawyer and witnesses were coerced (very common in the 80′s, especially in damn near rural Savannah – not said disrespectfully). We should take pause. IF you’re going to execute someone you better damn sure be right. I think the family just wants “someone” to pay. (Although I don’t want to minimize their loss).

The President should have not had a hands off approach. I mean people are not going to forget he did not try to intervene. Doubt the Supreme Court would ahve changed their minds, but Obama may have helped influence or delay their response longer. He could have tried to stay neutral but say that with doubt, there should be given more time to make sure he is the right person that committed the crime without any doubts before execution, because it wont be true justice. The Supreme Court concluded that Congress had more than enough time to make that happen, and when it didn’t, the High Courts denied the appeal. Leal died by lethal injection on July 7, 2011

No real society goes without a “death penalty”. That is asinine. There are crimes committed that are certainly worthy of the judgment of death. America is a giant prison complex, and is not a country at all, but is a corporation known as the “Corporation of Homeland Security”, and you can look that up. The point of building so many prisons and creating an atmosphere of criminality in so-called “minority communities” is to condition the unwanted elements of American society (so-called blacks, hispanics, native americans)to fall into the “jailhouse mentality”, which is essentially a modern day slave labor force. No empire can exist without slaves. That is the only reason why you have rapists and murderers still alive within the “penal system”. They are worth more alive than dead. The question of the “death penalty” is not a moral issue or question for those who are making the decisions at all. It is about money. It always has been and it always will be. Inmates are stock options. Prisons are on the stock market. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, and it amounts to nothing. The Lord said that there are sins that are punishable unto death (Lev 20:13, Deut 22:25-27, Matt 12:32, I John 5:16, etc.). The vengeance that is His, is the Day of Judgment (Isa 34:1-10, Isa 63:1-4).
I don’t know why black people allow themselves to get caught up in stories like this. This is an example of what is called a “psy op”, which is short for “psychological operation”. The mechanism is to get a certain demographic of people worked up over an issue that the manipulators already know will end in a result that is incontrovertible. In this case, and in most cases, the demographic that is being broken down is black people. What I don’t understand is why his DA or any of his reps could have saved him long time ago? Why 21 years later and nothing successful came out of it? If this man said he was innocent for that damn long, they should have looked further into his case to see if he was telling the truth. Now that he is gone, i hope the family don’t give up the fight and prove to the courts as well as the nation that he was innocent.
