With Lil Wayne selling a million records or 900,000+ units (depending on your source), many onlookers are in disbelief in the rapper’s album sale success. In so much disbelief that people are pointing fingers at his Young Money label for allegedly buying most of the tallied copies of Tha Carter IV.
The CEO of YMCMB/Cash Money Records, Birdman has been getting heat for supposedly buying most of the album units of the chart topping project. The 42 year-old entrepreneur stopped by Sway Calloway’s morning radio show and addressed the rumors:
“Nah, man, that really don’t make no sense. Why would we do that? I press and distribute ‘em. Ain’t no need for me to buy ‘em. That’s hustling backwards; we ain’t in it for that. I ain’t ever been a part of that type of scheme to be buyin’ records. We don’t do that, homey. We be working too hard to be — that don’t go with what we do. We truly what we do. We’re real about what we do, we work hard every day at it, and we work for the people. That’s what we do music for: for people. And we appreciate the love they give us back. But no such thing as me buying no CDs. I wouldn’t even play it like that.” [Source]
Hmm. You do know that If they did buy copies of the album, it would be an easy tax write-off…I’m just sayin’…

I honestly do not belive them and those sales, they need more people, I heard the album and it’s great, I know that Wayne tries to please a white fan base that he has, I know they buy her albums, HOWEVER, there is something that is not right, the music industry is falling hard, Lady Gaga could do those sales because she discounted her albums and started promoting since september 2010, not mentionning she was the biggest star months ago. Taylor Swift did that when she discounted her prices as well! Eminem didnt do that, Beyoncé didnt, BOTH JAY & YE didnt do it, Adele didnt do it, Usher, Alicia Keys, and these are the people who strongly sell ALBUMS, not necessarily singles! I mean, I’m sorry but something is terribly not right there. He did it one time, fine, second time when the most people sell is around 600-700K? And his last albums were not doing well, the carter 3 peaked ONLY around 3.5 million after selling 1 milli the first week too, mmmm…

Its not hustling backwards….thats bullshit….Record sales pale in comparison to the money made on touring and endorsement deals…which is what the music industry is doing now anyway. The cost of a CD purchased from the Manufacturer is going to be significantly less than what WE as a consumer would pay…So the extra money they put up towards buying albums can simply be considered promotional money…You buy a few hundred thousand albums at a few dollars a piece and you are not really spending much in terms of promotion. Album cost for Wayne isn’t nearly as high as others such as Jay-Z because of the tier of most of the producers he uses…The most obvious fact is that Lil Wayne targets a demographic/audience that is notorious for NOT buying albums….So it doesn’t make sense, especially when considering the small range of his fan base, to think he’s selling that much when artist who have larger fan bases and bigger names not only domestically, but WORLDWIDE, are selling less than him. In short…there are a lot of reason to where you should be at least dubious of it all…If not…odds are you are just d*ckriding. But logically speaking…this really doesn’t make sense,especially considering that the last time an artist had sales like this back to back was when Eminem and 50 Cent did it…and both of them were in a Era where people actually bought albums, and had a extremely heavy buzz without the fear of dominate bootleging…

Umm Wayne didn’t shut anything down. I don’t care how hard he tries and I don’t care how hard Baby tries who can never be Jay and will never be on his level period. He’s a damn coon running around the stage with no shirt on and his pants down around his ankles with nothing but explicit lyrics that when he performs the whole song has to be bleeped out and he knows his damn daughter is watching. There is no comparison to him and Jay. That Brooklyn swag is way up and that’s why wayne and Baby were sitting there looking dumb in the damn face when Jay and Kanye shut the VMA’s down. I think the Lil Waynes album sales are legit. Like many of you have stated he has a huge following black, white, young and old. Despite the last two albums being flops you have to consider his prison sentence then and the tour he is on now. I went to see him about a month ago in Charlotte. He was on tour with Lloyd, Keri Hilson and Rick Ross. The parking lot was full of loyal Waynes fan tail-gaiting until he graced the stage. The atmosphere was energetic and live. He has a national rock star presence and contrary to most beliefs he has the power to sell that many records. The rumors would be an excuse after he shattered Jay and Kanye’s sales and itune records…lol. As blacks we have to learn to support our artist and their differences instead of comparing them.
I guess people don’t understand how much of a cross over artist Wayne is. I work with whites, hispanics, and idians, and all of them like Wayne. My indian co-worker has his songs as his ring tone. Wayne appeals to a broad demographic, he can come out with some gangsta shit, or that rocking roll type shit.
