‘RTW LINKS: TV GUIDE RESPONDS TO TARAJI / DIDDY MAKES FORBES’ ‘ONES TO WATCH’ / WANDA SYKES REVEALS BREAST CANCER + MORE!

September 23rd, 2011

Following Taraji P. Henson’s vent about not being included on the potential cover of TV Guide, the editor-in-chief of TV Guide magazine & TVGuideMagazine.com, Debra Birnbaum issued a statement and wanted to set the record straight about Taraji being left out of the cover shoot for her new show Person of Interest:

I made an editorial decision to do a story about the relationship between the two male characters on ‘Person of Interest’ and that’s who I was going to put on the cover. That has been my decision all along, ever since I saw the pilot. We’re certainly fans of Taraji Henson and her storyline on the show was never intended to be the focus of our cover story. I don’t know where there was a misunderstanding about this, but it’s been clear to everyone from the start. I don’t make decisions on who is put and not put on the cover based on race or gender. [Source]

As a result, Birnbaum has decided to go with featuring the three stars of ABC’s new show Charlie’s Angels on next week’s issue (Sept 26) and is no longer “pursuing a cover of Person of Interest at this time.”

Taraji needs to be upset with CBS to because you really don’t see her in the trailers for the show.

NO I dont think she over reacted, and this “Exec” is still throwing shade by putting her in her place and dismissing their cover, making her look like she messed up a good opportunity by being spoiled. If the show has 3 leads, why only show 2? The entire markeing of this show is around 2 men so there is a much bigger issue here.

I am sure he would turn more heads by adding her beautiful face to a cover than just two random white men. SMH!

This is how Hollywood makes sure to keep black actors out of the lime light and I’m happy that she had the courage to speak out. This was obviously a snub…so sad we still have to deal with these types of issues

Yea…that sound suspect to me…Taraji did right, if she’s the lead she shouldn’tve been left off that’s like leaving one of the characters of Desperate Housewives off a cover and you KNOW that wouldn’t pull that! U go Taraji! Sidenote: I luv her Twitter postings, she’s a REAL sista

As if! If the TV Guide lady had nothing to reproach herself or her publication why would she respond? And to drop a whole cover plan (which in the print world I assume represents a certain number of sales, or otherwise bucks..) just to clear her name or assert her so called position as ‘editorial in chief’ doesn’t make much sense, does it? cause this is still business we’re talking about..

If anything, to me, it’s their response that looks wayy out there and overdone. and they don’t make much sense as a business at this moment..unless there was something else at play.

ie are they worried that their reputation could be damaged as a result of Taraji speaking out? if they are, then indeed it means they’ve been exposed for unethical behavior or something they wished was kept secret, and their reply is to use some type of a “bully” tactic, so as to send a “message” to anyone who might in the future be tempted to blow the whistle against them.
(Re: you will not only not get your said due, but we’ll go as far as rearrange our business plans just to penalize you and your entourage so as to get you scolded and ruin your day ner ner ner)..

Well, I’m sorry but these types of 101 childish, unprofessional and terrorist-like behavior doesn’t belong..TV Guide, you’re being exposed as being lame so don’t get angry, change your ways!!

I have concerns that her courage to speak out is labeled a “rant”. Why not say say, “Oh, angry black woman” and play on to the stereotypes? I’m glad she said something because it was obviously a snub and she is one of the stars and should have been featured. I hope that editor gets fired. What an azz.

She was right to be pissed because the last time I checked she was a RECENT OSCAR WINNER and the only one in the cast .

I watched the show it actually looks like it will be pretty good but if the Editor in Chief was gonna take that angle why wouldnt you not call THE OSCAR WINNER and say so and even invite her to the shoot anyway and get her take on things even if it was for a future issue .

This Editor failed to give Taraji the respect that she wouldve afforded any other Oscar winner and she knows it .

But to to be real I would not be surprised if that Editor did not even know who Taraji was even still an Oscar winner and after she was told took this route to correct her mistake

The song for Hustle and Flow won the Oscar, its not personally for her..she was nominated for Benjamin Button but didn’t win. Still, I do think an Oscar nominated actress should share the spotlight with her 2 co-stars, but I don’t think TV Guide, and the rest of Hollywood is really lookin’ for her now. If Halle Berry was in that spot, she would have certainly made the cover. Taraji is still too under the radar for most people.

The bottomline is “winner of Oscar” or not, they would have never disrespected a white female actress in this manner.

This was completely out of line, let’s see what’s more of an interesting story to focus on two white male characters (we see white men all the time on TV) or focus on the dynamic of a black female lead starring along side two white male actors (something that is never done, and a less over used story line).

Secondly, this woman knows who Taraji is. White people know more about us then we know about them, that’s who they constantly steal everything we do and say. We love to play the “white people don’t even know who we are” roll, it’s a trait we picked up during slavery.

This so called Editor, if she had nothing to be ashamed of, should have move forward with the piece, scrapping it only makes her look even more guilty.

We need to start sticking together, as blacks, when one of us is attacked and support our own – if we did more of that, then we would see more of a representation of blacks everywhere.

“I made an editorial decision to do a story about the relationship between the two male characters on ‘Person of Interest’ and that’s who I was going to put on the cover” <<<< First off How gay does that sound??? second that shit doesn't even make sense if you're going to defend yourself against such obvious exclusion of the MAIN CHARACTER oh by the way which happens to be Taraji P. and she's black, you need a better excuse than that! They put some white people on their cover because they feel that's what will attract people to the story! Shame on Tv Guide for that man! The relationship between the 2 guys ohhhh okay TV guide lol… whatever

While TV guide is racist, Taraji should have been smarter and waited till the cover was released before venting. It seemed like Taraji was demanding to be put on the cover, ie stagnating the other two male actors from having some shine. In this case it was just a fail.

I stated in the original post about this issue that this female was too dumb to realize that TV guide was doing her a favor by not including her on the cover because they would get more initial viewership if the viewers thought that the show was based around two caucasian males. Now she’s gone and infuriated massa, and now neither she nor her show will get any exposure. The first few weeks of these tv shows can make or break whether a network decides to purchase more episodes. The only black female that mainstream (white) America actually purposefully wants to see on television is Oprah, and that is because she puts white people first. Then again, Taraji Henson is the same degenerate who stated over a year ago that a man should be honored to raise another man’s children and lead her by the hand down the steps. She’s clearly another black female egomaniac….another in a very long line…..

I don’t think Taraji overreacted, but I don’t think she played this situation smartly. She should’ve gone to her network and producers, after hashing out a well-thought-out plan with her management, and insisted they stand behind her in approaching TV Guide. She should’ve “threatened” (diplomatically) that their failure to do so wreaks of racism, sexism, etc., and wouldn’t be kept from the press. TV Guide was more than shady for neglecting to include her on the cover, but she should’ve held the people behind the show responsible as well by forcing them to act on her behalf.

I believe TV Guide was wrong for what they did and the BS story they are trying to give. They are trying to make Taraji look like the mad black woman. Had that been Cathy Bates who is a lead character in another show surrounded by men, it would have never happened. Now as far as Taraji goes, I believe she approached it entirely wrong. Venting on “Twitter” is stupid and unprofessional which makes me dislike twitter and the stars who depend on it. She should have sat down with producers and had a formal meeting with TV Guide on the issue and perhaps talk to the media if she was displeased with the results exposing TV Guide on many levels

Birnbaum… shut up! F-ing shut up. What you did is wanted to promote the show as white charectors leading only. She has a lead role and you’re saying you couldnt find anything interesting about the person, just the 3 white men. I was going go to watch that show only because she was on it and now ya’ll can go suck one. I’ll stick to my re-play of Jersey Shore. MTV Thursday nights at 9pm and new episode at 10pm. As crazy and boring some of them would be when if they are promoting something No one gets left out. Does anyone have any suggestions on what other show comes on Thursday at 9pm for an hour?

I actually think tv guide was right. Unless she will make more appearances later in the show…the relationship between the two guys is what the show is. So THATS who you showcase on the cover. If the show had good ratings you know TV guide wouldve featured them again and probably with her aging ass on the cover as well
She needs to learn when NOT to show her cards and SADDOWN! The show might get cancelled now and all she’ll have now is some black movie to yell/talk to loudly in next

      SPEAKING THE TRUTH

Sorry, But Taraji is in the wrong here. If she was really one of the lead characters or the star of the show, then I would agree with her 1000%. But after watching the show it is clear that the show is centered around the story of the two white male characters of the show and not Taraji. She does not have a lead role, she is a supporting character on the show. I repeat she is NOT A LEAD. She has no right to demand being on the cover of any magazine with the small role that she has on the show. She made herself look bad by crying wolf. Her unjustified actions just make it harder for other black actresses.

Taraji has every reason to feel hurt when the media doesn’t want to recognize that she and her male counterparts worked collectively to produce a program that emphasizes equal strengths between man and woman. But apparently, not even the network itself is following through and being faithful to that idea.

Taraji didn’t overreact. He is acting shady like white people and the industry do and trying to cover himself. If her storyline was not germane to the cover, why take a picture of her. Why make her come down for a photo shoot? He may be telling the truth about his wants but he should have expressed that to the whole cast. I can tell by his word play that he is covering up something though.
