AWARENESS: PREVIEW ‘MISS REPRESENTATION’

Miss Representation tackles the misrepresentation of females by the media, exposing how women and girls are told and shown that value lies primarily in their youth, beauty and sexuality. The documentary film, which includes interviews with noted politicians and media personalities and personal stories from teenage girls, premiered at Sundance earlier this year and also deals with the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence. Miss Representation will make its broadcast debut tonight on OWN at 9 ET.

Check out the trailer for the film below, and visit missrepresentation.org to take the pledge to spread the message of challenging the media’s limiting portrayal of women and girls.

Have you noticed commercials these days portray the black women in them as stereotypical- showing sassiness, using words like “chile” “baby” or “okay” Like one Safe Auto commercial with the black woman named Gracie saying “come on dude….” and “call or click us baby” They rarely portray white women this way.

Yes I have noticed that and it’s super whack! It’s either the Geico commercial or some other big name insurance company’s commercial that also talks about making it rain. When I heard that I was just like, “WTF?” Theses commercials are starting to get out of hand. Not to mention the Old Spice commercial talking about Old Spice gives you swagger. I guess my two examples have nothing to do with deeming women or anything but they just came to mind. LOL

I am going to watch this, but I a will be interested if they tackle the broken home issue. We want to dance around this discussion about how we have allowed precious institutions like marriage to deteriorate especially in the black community, and then pretend like there is not an aftershock among our young people. As a teacher, yeah there is. Our kids are being destroyed by the lack of a strong male and female figure in the household. I will be interested to see if this is being discussed.

@ Jenn ^^^. I’m assuming you’re a woman. If we’re going to take a stand, I need you to learn how to write a complete sentence and check your spelling next time. lol. Come on girlfriend, let’s get it together. Have a lovely day! Can’t wait to view this documentary. It’s been long overdue!

I guess the best thing to do is if we find it offensive to how we want to be portrayed, we have to complain. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. I have to send an email or letter verbalizing why I do not like some of the commercials and will not purchase teh product unless it changes and how the black woman could have been portrayed with the same grace and intelligence as her white counterparts instead of the sassy, comic relief or the keeping it real girl. Thats tired, because keeping it real it not the same for all blacks. Some would be keeping it fake if they did not speak intelligently or showed grace and femininity. Some black folk would not be keeping it real if they shyed away from things they naturally enjoy like camping or mountain climbing, etc simply because God created it and not because black people dont do this or that. Its God’s for all to enjoy, dont box me in to anything.

women are major contributors to the stereotype they complain about; the fake hair, breast, butt, excessive make up etc. Men are not telling yall to wear some of the things you wear. I see some of the dresses you ladies wears to parties and night clubs; you can’t tell whose a prostitute and whose not. Women put more emphysis on their physical attritubes then we do. We just enjoy looking at you. We are not putting you under any pressure to wear some of the things you wear, you do it to get our attention and/or to be one up on the next girl. Hope this program will address this. Men in general appreciate the natural woman with all her blamishes. Not saying you shouldn’t put on make up to hence your appearences, but a lot of you ladies go too far with it. Ladies take it from a man whose been around for a while, We don’t care about big ass breasts, extentension in your hair, we don’t even care if you don’t shave the hair down there, wait, wait, maybe shave it somewhat lol. Yall get the point.

Thanks , I have recently been looking for info approximately this topic for a long time and yours is the best I’ve discovered so far. However, what in regards to the conclusion? Are you sure about the supply?|What i do not understood is actually how you’re now not actually much more neatly-appreciated than you might be now. You’re so intelligent.
