With Tyler Perry receiving much backlash for being a horrible director and screenwriter, many onlookers in the African-American community have also had a problem with the successful producer having to humorously wear a dress to get the attention of the masses.
Comedian Chris Rock addressed the topic in a recent interview with VIBE magazine and pointed out that it is nothing new and is not just an African-American male comedian thing:
“I mean, hey, lots of comedians dress up like women, not just Black. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book. Men in drag…There was Mrs. Doubtfire. [Adam] Sandler’s next movies is Jack and Jill. He plays his brother and sister. [The Black community] doesn’t have that many movies, so if there’s only four Black movies in a year and two of them star Black men in dresses, I could see how that would upset some people. But that’s a job for some people… Tyler Perry is great in a dress, but I don’t want to see Denzel or Will Smith in a dress. And I don’t think we’re in any danger of seeing that.” [Source]
Comedian Martin Lawrence played Sheneneh Jenkins in his television sitcom, Martin and that Jamie Foxx played Wanda on In Living Color. Don’t know about Will and Denzel wearing a dress…but in this day and age, anything is possible.
In addition, the Wayan Bros. made millions filming and producing the White Chicks movie and I’m sure you all remember comedian Dave Chappelle’s appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show a few years back – where he spoke in detail about it (VIEW THAT BELOW).

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

LOL… It’s the truth.
its real shit…becuz many comedians do it..

I agree with Chris Rock.
Me too. It is soooooooo not a “black” thing! This issue is actually STUPID.
I don’t see the problem. It’s all for entertainment, it shouldn’t be taken serious. If you don’t like them in dresses, don’t watch it. Simple as that.
Will Smith was already in drag in Wild Wild West lol.
So Will’s already done it.
I feel the same way as you. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Simple.
I don’t know about Adam Sandler, once I view the movie then I’ll have an opinion. If I recall Mrs.Doubtfire dressed as a foreign nanny just to be near his kids whohe was involuntarily seperated from. The problem with Tyler Perry, Martin Lawrence, Jamie, Eddie and the rest of these closet queens is that they’re portraying negative streotypes of black women. Not all older and younger black women go around frying and eating chicken and fish all day, smacking their lips greased with lipgloss, neck rolling, screaming heeeyyyy, or packing a pistol. Not all black women have quick temper attitudes and ready to take somebody out.
…and not all older black women are overweight with their breast down to their knees.
but some black women do fit these sterotypes and its funny has hell, so i say go ahead tyler, martin and jamie, do those characters well
It’s time to change it up. It was funny 10-15 years ago but it’s getting tired. Heck Tyler is even smart enough to know that he can’t do Madea for ever screen play, and television show. Have u checked the box office results for Big Mommas House 2 and 3? Didn’t Norbit get like some award for being the worst film ever?
It’s amazing to me how black people always want to throw out the idea that these things are portraying our community in a negative light when in actuality these things are portraying exactly what we actually do see in our own communities. My own da** grandmother was like Madea and so were/are a lot of other black grandmother’s. I’ve seen women like Sheneneh at the beauty supply, in the hood, at the grocery store so we can just stop it with this garbage. Stop trying to act like you don’t know a Sheneneh and that grandma wouldn’t bust a cap in someone if someone messed with her grandbaby. My mema would quickly pull a pistol, scare the he!! out of someone like she was going to shoot them knowing all the da** while the gun had no bullets in it and she never even owned bullets for it. LOL My grandmother was loved and respected but she’d cut you over her grandbaby and it is what it is. Archie Bunker and the Beverly Hillbillies and Mama’s Family and even the cartoon the Flintstones doesn’t show whitey in the most positive light but no one says anything about that. It’s always the spotlight on the black community. We have movies like the Color Purple, The Great Debaters, Red Tail’s (about to come out), The Tuskegee Airmen etc., etc. So what’s the fuss? It’s just the black community wanting something to fuss about as usual. When this really isn’t a discussion in the first place.
@ Jazmine not all black people grow up the same way. Not all black people are born and raised in urban areas/hoods/ghettos and those that are don’t necessarily pick up or showcase the hood mentality. I’m not sure about your grandmother’s gun carrying habit, sounds redundant. Please stop with the Archie Bunker, Mama’s Family and Beverly Hillbilies comparison. Back than all black cast shows barely had a chance. We have came a long way since then there is no need to countinue such coonery. With all the money Tyler Perry have he should be more innovative by now.
@ Morning
Please re-read what I posted, dear. I never said ALL black people are one way or another. Anyone with a little bit of sense knows that. What I did say is that you cannot act like you don’t know a Sheneneh or maybe even had a pistol packing granny like mine. Most of us are only one generation out of the hood anyway so you can miss me with that. I too didn’t grow up in the hood. I’m the one generation out. I grew up middle class with both of my parents but I’d be an idiot and a liar to say I don’t know anyone from the hood and have cousins, uncles and aunts still in the hood. At the end of the day what you are seeing in a lot of these films is a depiction of A PART of our reality. Madea and Sheneneh are alive and well in the black community and you know it. These types of movies and types of characters would fall dead with us if we couldn’t relate to them in some sort of way. These movies/sitcoms do so well because we’re watching them and we’re watching them because in some way, shape or form we can relate to them. It’s sad that some of us can’t be honest about that. My problem is when people point out every little thing in the black community and make it such a big deal. Mrs. Doubtfire, the non-black dudes in that Too Wong Foo movie, Jim Carrey dressing like that masculine looking chick on In Living Color…were these white men emasculated too???? Is it emasculating to play gay boys in movies too? Is there a form of emasculation done to women when they play boys in movies??? You’re going to have to come a little harder with your argument because to me there isn’t one. Tyler Perry and Martin are just two of the young men entertaining us with what appeals to us. I spoke on the movies like Red Tails and Color Purple and Great Debaters as well. Those movies are out there too so your stance is meaningless on this issue. If you don’t want to see dudes in dresses, then don’t spend your money on it. If Great Debaters is your cup of tea then support that. My issue is the over emphasis on the whole Tyler Perry and men in dresses thing. It’s pointless because it has no validity to it because other races have movies that depict them in the same way. However, they don’t see it as such big deals so why do we??? This “controversy” shouldn’t even be a topic. I just see it as another way for the black community to complain about something because most of us just love to have something to say about ANYTHING. It seems you fit well into that group too.
Yes, the reality is these portrayals aren’t “made up”, they do exist and the plain truth is that the real madeas and the tyler perry madea is funny and if he is bright enough to get paid from that kudos to him…what’s the big deal. Funny is funny. Comedy is comedy. Plain and simple. Why do we have to make everything a race thing…we shouldn’t…they’re are Jewish comedians making money off of how their people are portrayed too…I don’t see them bickering (as loud anyway) about it. Hmmph!
@ Morning the funny thing about it is that Madea does look just like my late grandmother, she didn’t act like that, but he is dead on with her looks. To tell the truth I am really tired of Madea, it is getting old.
Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhimes did it also. They are just movies and the ones that complain are not trying to come out with any new movies. I am so tired of all these old movies being remade. Say what you will but Tyler perry is doimg the damn thing and getting paid and putting plenty of people to work including African American actors and actresses, young and old.. I love going to the movies with my mom, aunt and daughters just lauging and having fun. Nobodys getting killed, robbing banks or having sex. There is always a message. Go Tyler bring on Madea.
I kind a get what you are saying but you are missing something. What you failed to realize is tyler perry not only has that type of black men and woman in his movies, but he also has other types. Yeah you see the pistol holding, but you also see the author, the lawyer, the christian. Stop taking everything a black successful producer does and try to put it down. The problem is white people don’t give us a chance since they own everything, and black people can’t be happy when a producer like tyler perry tries to give you a chance to point at the screen and say I do that. Martin and Brandon T. Jackson didn’t at ghetto in their movie. So stop with the potraying black women in bad light. Cause they do not. Certian rappers and rap music is our communities problem, and not able to see ourselves doing something positive by not having parents or both parents to guide or not enough of us seen on tv. That is some blacks not all.
I’m with you when your right, and Jazmine you are on point.
Chris always brings a non-biased opinion to the table, love him. It’s not even a discussion, just ignorance. It works. The only setback I see is it makes it harder for White Hollywood to take our other comedic actors, up and coming and what not, eriously and get new projects greenlit.
This is why I f**k with Chris Rock! He’s super intelligent and he’s right. EVRYTHING that is done in the black community is blown out of proportion by none other than the black community. We’re so use to tearing each other down that we don’t know how to lift each other up. I never understood the big deal with the whole thing in the first place. These people are actors that get paid to act like other people. Bottom line. Tyler Perry is getting paid to be the Madea character. Martin got paid to be Sheneneh etc., etc. Is a man also emasculated when he has to play a gay man in a movie and kiss on and have sex scenes with other men?!?!?!? Maybe I should ask that question of the WHITE Broke Back Mountain boys. I don’t know what the opposite of emasculation would be when referring to a woman but is a woman made to feel like a man when they play the role of a man in a movie? Maybe I should ask that of Oscar award winning Boys Don’t Cry star Hillary Swank. See, black folk have life and bullshyt mixed all the way up and this “topic” here is a bunch of bullshyt. I will go to the grave reiterating the fact that we waste our time on way too much dumb shyt in our community. Why are we even discussing this? Shouldn’t we be somewhere finding a cure for AIDS, telling our teens to educate themselves, worrying about the devastation in Africa/USA, reading a book, knitting, gardening, helping our kids with schoolwork, cooking or just minding our own fu**ing business and trying to get this money?!?!? These types of discussions infuriate me b/c we don’t even see that it’s no longer the white man with his foot on our neck’s anymore. We’re the crabs in the barrel keeping each other down. They (whitey) doesn’t even have to do the dirty work anymore. They can sit back, laugh and watch us do it to ourselves and that’s a damn shame. SMH
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! YOU AND CHRIS SAID EVERYTHING I HAVE BEEN SAYING!!
@ Jazmine play it again stan. Isn’t it so sad, because we have so much potential, but will just not let the negative vibe go we have amongst each other. WHEN WILL WE LEARN!!!!
So true, so true
The thing is that black woman would rather see a black man playing a woman instead of a black man playing a man…. I bet you If Idris Elba played James Bond, black women wouldnt go see it, but madea box office hit… So black ppl need to stfu and start supporting other movies, not just big momma house and madea..
Did you really just say black women would not go see fine azz, super talented Idris Elba as James Bond in a movie?!?!? BOY STOP!!! GTFOH with that one. LOL
People go to the movies to watch what they want to see not just support black movies. If it is something I dont want to see Im not going to watch it. Black Movie Producer Need to start making Good Black movies and i will definately have no problem supporting them.

LOL @ Jazmine
Not one part of your comment made sense.
I agree with you JBONE. What we have is a society that is, intentionally or not, attempting to take away the power of the Black Male.
The truth is, the Black male represents physical power. Intimidating and raw. The women that love to see Black men in dresses fail to understand that without that powerful Black Male figure to protect them, they’re on their own. And we seen how people go in on the First Lady.
It gives a very negative stereotype of Black men. And every woman walking around is condemning black men as Low down but yet they applaud them wearing dresses.
Apparently everyone has forgotten that Will Smith was dressed as a woman a belly dancer no less in that mess called Wild Wild West! Oh and please dont froget he went as far as to paint his fingers and toes Red! *Side eye* Hmmm.
Oh yeah! Forgot about Wild Wild West!
Sure did with the red lipstick
He also played a gay role in six degrees of separation. And even did a gay love scene.
I agree with Chis. If its funny Im going to laugh however Men didnt have to dress up as a women it could have been a real women for all I care as long as she brought the funny. People do need to stop coming down on Tyler Perry though if you dont like his movies dont watch them.
That would be the end of Denzel’s career is he dressed up as a woman.
thank you, Denzel is smart enough to pick and choose his characters. That’s why he is the top paid actor in Hollywood. He probably could have stole the role of Noxema in To Wong Fu from Wesley but he choose Ricochet and Devil in a Blue Dress. Now look where he is and look where Wesley is at…message.
If you don’t like, don’t go see it!!!! So sick of this already! I love Martin and Tyler Perry and “wanda” was one of my favorite characters on In Living Color.
I don’t see why there is controversy around this, it isn’t new and we didn’t start it. Opportunities are still few for blacks in Hollywood, get in where you can and get yours.
too much complaining about such stupidity. GET OVER IT! What about we clean up the streets and put food on our children’s plates 1st, before we come on blogs and complain about blk cinema being negative. Yall have some damn mutha ucking nerve!
Support black film.
Real Talk!!! People act like Tootsie, Mrs Doubtfire , too wong foo and MANY others weren’t around before Madea and Big Mamma!! Retarded!
Not to mention Monty Python and most any British comedies.
Yes, the reality is these portrayals aren’t “made up”, they do exist and the plain truth is that the real madeas and the tyler perry madea is funny and if he is bright enough to get paid from that kudos to him…what’s the big deal. Martin Lawrence played Sheneneh Jenkins and Mama Payne for 5 to 6 years on his show nobody ever called it coonery and buffoonery also flip wilson as geraldine. Non of this stuff was a big issue until Tyler Perry came out!! I just want to know what’s the difference between Martin doing it and Tyler Perry doing. To me I see it as pure entertainment.
FINALLY! I am so tired of hearing about this issue! Stop trying to tear down Tyler Perry for making a success for himself. I enjoy the movies, I HAVE an uncle just like Mr. Brown and I am NOT from the hood. So you “I’m above a certain type of blackness” folks need to just stop! Denzel is not a comedic actor so of COURSE he wouldn’t do a role like that, not because he is above it, but that’s not his style. At the end of the day, Tyler Perry is putting out BLACK movies with BLACK actors out there on his own money and constantly topping the box office, even though he only gets a portion of the theaters a mainstream film gets. That needs to be respected, applauded and supported!
Yes. Black people, try to be happy for 24 hours for a change, okay. Either get up and get busy to change something or stop being typical and complaining and sitting.
It’s true. It’s not just a black thing….. did we forget Jim Carey played a woman with pink tails on the tv show “in living color”? What about Robin Williams playing Mrs. Doubtfire? There are several white men who dressed up as white women on tv and in movies. I think the only reason why people (mostly the black actors and directors) are so upset is because Tyler Perry is the only one making the most money playing an older woman in a movie….
I think chris rock is right about 1 thing, there arent that many black movies that come out in the theaters a year, but when a good one does come out, like the great debaters or miracle at saint ana, black ppl dont support it,but you would support a madea or the help,i cant even hate on tyler perry he’s a smart dude, and made millions off showing blk woman what they want to see,not what they need to see lol,its a brilliant schme,it kills me when black ppl say well white men dressed in drag,so black men can do it to,who gives a fuck what white ppl do,the masses has been trying to demasculinize blk men for years, like with this whole down low shit, white men been on that gay shit for years since julius caesar and king james, but i guess when blk men do it,its considerd to be down low lol they don’t want to show us as the strong men that we are, beacause we would been seen as a threat, and we are a threat black ppl,if we wasnt there wouldnt be any white supremacy,or any propaganda that showed black ppl in a inferior position, and they know if they show us black ppl in a negative way its gonna fuck wit you mentally(to those that are weak minded of course) i appreciate tyler perry giving black ppl jobs in hollywood that a beautiful thing, but if tyler perry decided to stop making movies, wtf is black actors gonna do? cause white hollywood dont give a fuck about us,we need to start supporting other black screen writers/directors,im not a rich dude but i do go on kickstarter.com give 100 to 200 out and try to help support black ppl that are trying to get there projects out, shit we got the money,it kills me when blk ppl say they broke but they make sure they get the new jordans or christian louboutins when they come out,or when black woman there hair/nails done every week, and all the hair products,do u know how much these asians/whites are making off black hair alone a year? MILLIONS,there putting there kids threw college off the money from us,but we cant take at least half of that money in to somewhere productive that will benefit us as a whole in the future? something is wrong with that picture
Black people are so sensative omg & mind you im black, tyler perry has never said the character madea was about every older black woman he did however say the character revolves around his aunts & mother, if you dont like the movies:/ character then simply dont go watch it. Stop complaning & get over it.
I understand that black men dressing up as black woman is funny and just a comedy thing. But, I’m tired Tyler Perry’s Madea movies. Wish there were better, respectable black movies to watch.
Anyway, can’t wait for Jaime Fox and Martin Lawrence’s movie Sank robbers with Sheneneh
Ha. Now that’s a respectable black movie, about bank robbery and a hoodrat named Sheneneh!
No real man should dress up in women’s gear, period. How would you feel knowing your father dressed up as a woman for his job, even if he was doing it solely for entertainment? That would make me feel uncomfortable. I have yet to see an Asian man dressed up as a woman though…
Ever heard of Bangkok, Thailand? It’s ladyboy central for tranny tourism. You need to get out more.
LMAO… get of the computer and read a book…. Asians make the most convincing shemales
@ JN yup… built an industry around it…
@JN
Maybe I should’ve made myself clear. I have yet to see an Asian man “IN HOLLYWOOD” dress up.
All bc whites do it, blacks must do it too? That is the problem with the black community. Of course he thinks Tyler is great is a dress bc he probably had Tyler play dress up for him. Chris has a record of cheating on his wife and frequently visits strip clubs esp when he is NYC. It is rumored he digs trannies but what I do know is he has an ongoing relationship w. this one stripper who looks like a man (lacefronts & all) and has her on his payroll.
Is it you?
LMAO im sure you know Chris personally lol
mto, is that you? LMAO!
why don’t you stop blogging and write a tell all book since you obviously in the business and knows about EVERYBODY…smdh
Amen Jazmine!
Chris Rock is right, I think its not a big deal. Especially since most black men are raised by their mothers and aunts or grandmothers, they can be the funniest imitators. Its better than a “woe is me” or maid or a slave movie.
“whoa is me”
im so tired of this topic, and excuse my language but yall act like these men are on screen SUCKIN DICK or something? it’s a comedy role that Tyler Perry made up and is portraying, it’s not that fuckin serious, the humor COMES from the fact that we KNOW its a man, just like Martin Lawrence in “Big Momma” in fact since the beggining of play rights, men have played the role of a women and even back then it was SEEN as funny, so please stop with all this de-masculinization of the “black man” its annoying now, everything is not some “plot” to get us
Denzel doesn’t wear dresses in his movies because he doen’t need to! Tyler Perry’s Madea character carries more with her than a pistol. He uses her as a vehicle to ‘hide’ an even more controversial subject..religion and family values. It is sad but true that highly religious themed films don’t make it to the big screen the way they should. For Madea to be such a shameful character to black women and all women……Tyler made the Forbe’s list as the richest man in Hollywood this year…..READ! Before we condemn people for what tey do, research history and you’ll see that veteran comic Milton Berle wore womens’ clothing in the early 50s,John Ritter played a woman on several episodes of Three’s Company and Tom Hanks ( one of the most highest paid white actors in Hollywood) got his start from playing a woman on ‘Bosom Buddies!’ I’d rather see our black men don dresses and give a message than to have White actors portray black women as mammies, maids, crackheads, angry baby mamas, and prostitutes!
chiwetel ejiofor played a drag queen in a great movie, Whats his name(Blade) was drag in another great movie. Its not just comedy that has seen Black guys in drag. I guess it depends on the movie role.. If any one of the top Black actors were to read a script that involved them playing drag but it was a really strong story, they wold most likely take it up.. WESLEY SNIPES, there u go…….
I`m not really a fan of Chris Rock, but I agree
with him on this issue. In regards to Tyler Perry
He is a multitalented writer/producer/director/actor.
Tyler perry is the only african american man who has
own hollywood production studios. He is entertaining
as Madea and when he`s not. Their is always a positive
message in his movies. He has employed more african american
actors than anyone else in hollywood.
Overdone and bad portrayals. He knows better.
Do people really know when a male actor is playing a certify drag queen?
Have anyone ever seen Nathan Lane ‘drag queen’ character in the movie ‘Bird Cage’ with Robin Williams, now that was a certify ‘drag queen’ act. Nathan Lane acting was very feminine, that’s my of belief a ‘drag queen’ act mimicking female traits to the fullest.
If you look closely at Tyler’s ‘Madea’ act, ain’t nothing feminine about Madea or Big Mama. Sheneneh Jenkins was just funny. Even Wesley and Patrick character in that movie wasn’t feminine.
Flip Wilson ‘Geraldine’ is questionable.
I know black people can be very picky! but what the hell is wrong with Chris Rock hair in this pic! lol
will was in a dress in Wild Wild West
Wesley was in a dress in To Wong Foo
don’t have a point… just remembered those 2 movies
Wesley Snipes did it in ” To Wong Foo Thanks for everything”. Ving Rhames did it in “Holiday Heart”. Wayman Brothers in “White Chicks”. Seriously? It’s comedy. Don’t like it. Don’t watch it. We have had plenty of wonderful films that told messages i.e. Spike Lee. There are plenty of genres and plenty of ways actors express themselves.
We have so many great actors Harry Belafonte, Idris Elba, Djimon Hounsou etc. I think we waste so much time criticizing men in drag that we need to praise the actors that who have done fantastic work. Comedy is just what it is comedy. Drama is drama and so on and so forth.
If I am not mistaken (and someone correct me if I am wrong). Men have been dressing in drag since Roman Times. Who do you think played the female roles? Men!
This is a prerequisite for any black man who wants to land a major roll in Hollywood. Either they wear a dress or get shot in the ass. Professor Griff and Bobby Hemmitt have both talked about this in detail. Check out this YouTube clip where Dr. Bobby Hemmitt lectures on this very thing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE9WUSRsx0o
Why is this a problem ?.. Its the world of satirization. Its comedy. Though I dont like Tyler Perry’s buffoonish, stereotypical work, I dont think playing a woman is some how a conspiracy that black men in comedy are being emasculated.. Its acting, art and comedy.
I agree with Chris. It is the oldest trick in the book, in theater, not just comedy. However with so few black productions coming out, and even fewer being exposed to the mainstream, it can appear like that’s all black men do. We just have to get out and support our films and our stories to ensure the full spectrum is being represented. Everything doesn’t have to be highbrow, nor does it need to appeal to lowest common denominator either. There is more than one story to be told.
I’ve read several just right stuff here. Definitely price bookmarking for revisiting. I surprise how so much attempt you set to make the sort of fantastic informative web site.
so, if they dress like women majority of people like watching them & i don’t really think they care about that because they still getting rich by doing what they do.
[Man in dress = silly] but [Woman in pants = serious] There is a gender issue in what is concidered funny. Everyone knows black people are generally more homophobic which makes black men in drag funnier then white man in drag as most blacks are uncomfortable with it.
It becomes very imperative to understand that comedy goes beyond gender, race, religion or social status. Making people laugh is a gift and skill , lets stop talking about issues that could create disaffection amongs comics. OJO Martins is the Principal of Nigerian Comedy School, laff4life
There is something much deeper here: It is the purposeful emasculation of the Black men before the world stage by the White establishments. In film and on stage we saw it when Black men were portrayed as ignorant “Steppin Fetchit’s.” Then the transition into putting our Black men in dresses and make up. If White males do it, fine. They are not being emasculated. Our Black males are.
I grew up watching Flip Wilson portraying a sassy and edgy Black woman character called Geraldine.
This issue is not about being uptight. I have children and this is not how I want them to view our Black males; especially against the backdrop and portrayal of the White male being “right as rain.”
The bottom line here is money. Money that the White powers that be feel that they can buy anything and anyone to do their bidding: Emasculating the Black male.
Listen, Charles Barkley and all of those brothers who dress up as women have theirs. They got paid. They can care less about the impact of what they do has on our Black youth; they should, tho’. It is about the money.
White film makers portray the White male as being saviors of worlds and heroes (Avatar, John Carter, Captain Kirk in Star Trek, etc) while they put our Black men in dresses.
We had better wake up and remember all the crap our ancestors had to go through by the White slave master to sell them out and let the children of the slave master reduce us to this.
It’s the high profile black actors like Chris Rock who are being emasculated. We all know when something negative is portrayed of one black man,it’s projected onto all black men.Black men cross dressing and playing gay roles are just some of the ways Hollywood emasculates the black male image.Tell me when was the last time you saw a black action star?Bend over and spread your cheeks to many famous black male actors are droping the soap in the shower.
