On Saturday, October 15th, many notable black celebrity women came out to support the 2011 Black Girls Rock Awards! The star-studded event was held at the famed Paradise Theater in Bronx, New York. Co-hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King, artists like Mary J. Blige, Mary Mary, Melanie Fiona, Estelle and Elle Varner stepped on stage to perform their latest singles and fan favorites.
Shirley Caesar, Taraji P. Henson, Angela Davis, Malika Saada Saar & Tatyana Ali and others were 2011 honorees. Check out the gallery below and see who else popped up to show support for the annual ceremony.
Black Girls Rock!, Inc. is a nonprofit organization started by model/DJ/philantrophist Beverly Bonds (top left), that is dedicated to building the self-esteem and self-worth of young women of color by changing their outlook on life, broadening their horizons, exposing them to creative and performing arts, and helping them to empower themselves.
The Black Girls Rock! awards show will air on Sunday, November 6 at 8/7pm CST on BET.

i’m sure i’ll be bashed for this and called a crab but in reality i’m just holding my people to a higher standard – it’s disappointing to see yet another awards show or ceremony to blow additional smoke up collective celebrity ass. i thought this org was about showing young black girls that we rock and we’re relevant. why not have a show that honors young girls and maybe just one celebrity? they’ve already made it. i dunno….i guess nobody would watch that but then maybe they shouldn’t have an award show. Just spend the money on a dumb star-studded award show to sponsor 100 more young black girls and uplift the community.
