Following recent allegations that she plagiarized Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in her new video for “Countdown”, Beyonce issued a statement acknowledging that De Keersmaeker’s work and others helped inspire the video treatment.
“Clearly, the ballet Rosas danst Rosas was one of many references for my video, Countdown. It was one of the inspirations used to bring the feel and look of the song to life… I was also paying tribute to the film, Funny Face with the legendary Audrey Hepburn. My biggest inspirations were the 60s, the 70s, Brigitte Bardot, Andy Warhol, Twiggy and Diana Ross.”
Adria Petty, who directed the video, also issued a statement saying, “I’ve always been fascinated by the way contemporary art uses different elements and references to produce something unique. The video already has close to two million views so hopefully the fans will look at all the tributes and then discover Audrey Hepburn, Warhol, Bardot, Rosas danst Rosas and all the works that inspired me and shaped this video.”

Secondly, Michael did not do “the exact same thing” and your comment is all over the place what do you mean by “the exact same thing” Michael came up with the creative concepts all his own. If you actually follow his work you will see that he worked as a team with Rod Temperton and Quincy Jones to come up with his music. Unlike beyonce Michael was humble in his demeanor and bold in his persona he created the perfect balance whereas beyonce is just a fraud who is not being exposed.

You can try hard to play MJ small, but he fundamentally changed music, dance and video for ever. It is quite unfair to question his talent to help Beyonce. MJ worked 45 years in the music Biz of his 50 years on this earth. there are certain people who have craved out a distinct style for themselves..MJ did it, Aretha did it, James did it…

If her creative people cant make up ideas without looking at other people’s ideas first then thats a problem. Everything that Beyonce does is under a microscope. She is not the first artist to incorporate past references and nostalgia into her videos and performances and she wont be the last.
Contrary to other artists, I think that Beyonce’s respect for musical history, is what separates her from other contemporary artists. She is knowledgeable of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and Bob Fosse. She’s done her history on the greats such as Barbara Streisand, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and others. She incorporates a lot of these other artists works into her own individual style and makes them new again. She’s one of the few black artists who have been praised by the likes of Barbara Streisand and Micheal Jackson and who has performed homage to them or along side them.
No matter how original (Crazy In Love, If I Were A Boy) or how referential (Single Ladies, Countdown) her videos and performances are, she will always be scrutinized and talked about. As long as they’re talking about her, she’s doing something right.

I love this comment. Kinda looks at things in a different perspective. BUT Beyonce should be used to people making accusations by now so she should just have contacted the choreographer and informed her about her plans

Many us of older folks knew exactly what it looked liked when we saw the video, but I guess younger folks is the audience that she targets. I really don’t know what the problem is let the woman do her thing. For those of you who like Beyonce keep supporting her, for those of you who don’t support the artist you like. My point is Who really cares the woman is already a superstar, so she must be doing something right.
@ O_O To pay tribute to means to nod your head at something and add something OF YOUR OWN, not to knick EVERYTHING straight off without a shred of originality. The choreographer in question has spent her life choreographing and perfecting a unique style. To steal this straight off is plagiarism. If you want to sing someone elses song you pay whoever has the rights to use it. This is a FAMOUS dance piece ( if you are not a dancer you do not understand what a landmark choreography it is and how many thousands of people that ask for PERMISSION to perform the pieces she just knicked) and to claim that Anne Terese De Keersmaeker did not recieve her own fame is ignorant. Same goes for Beyonces so called Bob Fosse “tribute” she (her choreographer) stole choreography straight off. It shows no originality – it is just sad. I like Beyonce and i hope she stops knicking things and change her lame ass choreographers who cannot come up with something of their own, even I can choreograph a “tribute” NOT using the SAME exact movements. Sad.
i mean if she would stop acting like shes the greatest most creative most innovative artist of all time.she wouldnt get called out.just admit your a good singer/performer but is unoriginal and lacks innovation,dosent write songs
I think the issue is she uses others work wAy too often intead of coming up with original material and ideas. People tend to be in denial and refuse the truth. Her work wouldn”t be questionable if she was more original and not quick to say “I was inspired”, everytime an artist calls her out. Point blank. Other than that Beyonce is cool.
If she was “inspired” by Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, then why did she release a statement herself saying that she wasn’t cool with the video? Point blank people borrow from each other all the time this is nothing new. Being inspired means when referencing someone else, you create your own at the same time. This wasn’t it and there’s no way around it. Beyonce’s been in the game long enough to know about copyrights, plagiarism, and ethics. All she had to do was give credit to whoever she borrowing from before hand, throw them some money to use their stuff, and ta-da! no problems. But oh well
I am actually on Bey Bey’s side on this one because everyone knows she ain’t smart enough to have stolen from people she ain’t never heard of. This plagiarism is the work of the producer…jump on his ass.
Sorry but beyonce has said that she is in control of her career and that she gets the last say.So beyonce knew what was up and since she is always being accused of stealing it seems like she would be careful to make sure that her choreographer creates routines from ground up.She doesn’t do that because she is the mastermind behind the scheme simple as that.You stans are going to have to stop making up excuses for her.
Michael never stole anyone else’s material. He was inspired by other people’e work. He acknowledged that and gave CREDIT where CREDIT was DUE. There is no DENYING that the man made a PATH of his own something that beyonce has yet to do. The glitter glove and glitter socks that is all michael. What does beyonce have to call her own? Michael’s 4th solo album as an adult sold over 30 million copies – beyonce’s 4th album hasn’t even sold over 2 million worldwide and has been out for 4 months going on 5. In fact, Daniels, who used to do it on Soul Train as a dancer before joining Jody Watley and Howard Hewitt to form Shalamar, was actually hired by MJ to teach him how to do the steps correctly. So your entire rant was one big FAIL.

I’m not surprised. She already got sued over the perfume that she plagiarized & she plagiarizes Diana Ross & Donna Summer all the time. She has copied so many other REAL artists music, choreography, wardrobes, etc throughout her whole career. Shes not even a good singer anyway.
