NEW MUSIC: DAWN RICHARD – “SMFU (SAVE ME FROM U)”

♫ Dawn Richard – SMFU (Save Me From U)

Dawn Richard was one fifth of Danity Kane, one third of Dirty Money and now she’s a solo artist. Check out the latest material from her repertoire, “SMFU (Save Me From U),” which was produced by Druski.

Dawn is known for dropping her fans some new material, so it’s no telling whether this will come from her debut album, GoldenHeart, which is set to drop next year and is the first installment of a trilogy album that she’s conceptualized. No official single or release date for Dawn, but she most definitely will release more material via her Twitter as she continues her process.

Love Dawn, but you can definitely tell that Brandy is a major influence on her, maybe too much of an influence. Nice song tho!

From the first note, I heard “Brandy” in this song.

    • Smile!

Both of u need to find something to do, Because this girl is not trying to be Brandy. First it was Monica vs Brandy, now it’s Dawn trying to be Brandy. Get the f’k out of here! I can’t stand simple minded people. Let this girl shine, because that’s what she is doing. :)

    • EightyDuece

Simple Minded?! No one said anything about Dawn trying to be Brandy. I said that you can tell she is influenced by Brandy, she even said it herself. Before you go on the defense you should read the actual comment.

    • Smile!

I’m just tired of hearing people mentioning Brandy’s name..Because Dawn said something about her..if she wouldn’t of mentioned Brandy..Nobody would be comparing her to Brandy..Sorry I don’t see it the same way some others do, being that I’m a Brandy’s fan!

    • lettadell

i understand what you all are saying. i dont think brandy neccesarily influences her but they definetly have similar voices

      Dawn,
you were always the best out of Danity Kane and I have been waiting for you to bring your own stuff out. I will support anything that you do. Your voice is beautiful. Don’t ever let any negative people get you down because you are truly amazing.
      Sincerely,

I’m feeling this song by Dawn. I loved her mixtape. ATellTaleHeart it was album worthy.

  3. Tiff

Love it Dawn. Can’t wait for the CD to drop.

  4. Smile!

I love this song, and her voice. Dawn a BEAST! let me just put that out there. And she is not imitating Brandy at all! If some people truly believe that. Than go back and listen to Brandy’s music. There songs sounds completely different! Dawn cannot help it that her voice is unique, or similar to Brandy’s. Diddy loved her tone (voice) that why he asked her to be in Diddy Dirty Money. Know your FACTS people. Dawn keep shining because you’re a star!!

  5. KeepingItFunky

Love it! Love it! LOVE ITTTTTTT!!! This song almost made me cry. Lol!

Although I hear the Brandy similarities, I don’t think it’s fair to punish her for a tone she can’t help. Dawn has been able to sing like this for years, it’s only brought to our attention now bc she’s solo & singing alone. I wish her the best!

  6. Redchainsaw

Dirty Money didn’t chart well and Dawn as a solo act will do even worst

    • vandykid

Can’t deny the fact that it was good music and actually one of the most cohesive albums from an artist in that genre in a while and sonically different as well.

    • Jasmine

I doubt Dawn will do worse, but you are entitled to your own opinion.

    • jerrianjones

Dirty Money cd ddnt chart well but it’s one of the best R&B/hiphop albums from the last few yrs….That cd is before it’s time….Diddy actually did something right lol…

and DAWN is amazing even if she doesn’t chart well she’s still a God given talent

  7. vandykid

WOW! Even better than the songs on ATellTaleHeart…much more deeper and darker. It’s unusual to hear the melody being lead by a guitar in R&B music today. It suits the theme of the song. Staying by Diddy’s side has been working for her. He’s allowing her to develop her talents as a writer and musician.

  8. BeautifulLover

wow…. if you listen closely…. Brandy is her background vocals… Dark Child Rodney Jerkins had to do this track… Sounds just like Brandys ballad…. Wow Nice but to much Brandy on here…. Waaaaaay to much. But as I said its still nice. Hmmmmmm….

    • Jasmine

Actually Dawn is her own background singer. Not to get personal, but I know the producer and Dawn as well personally. Just thought I would enlighten you on your error. Also, Brandy is an influence but she is NOT mimicking her.

  9. Jamil

I think her album will do well. I’m also interested in what is going on with Aubrey 0′day?

No Brandy background vocals on this. Be real. Dope song although the demo I have of this is better. Glad to see she sang it though.

  11. ftab

This girl keeps delivery great music. She is unbelievable wow!

  12. welfarecase

wow she sounds just like Brandy

  13. jerrianjones

WHAT AN AMAZING CONCEPT FOR A SONG!!!!!!.. and yes it sounds like Brandy, but if you can sound like anyone she wld be someone you’d want to sound like….beautiful song…great lyrics, Dawn’s voice is on point…This is the best i’ve heard from her in months….#goDAwn

  14. Watcher

Nah, Brandy has more of an airy quality to her voice. Dawn’s voice is much richer in tone. This is a gorgeous song with on-point vocals and lush harmonies, and she looks good too.

  15. Non-Hater

I too heard Brandy at first listen (though i much prefer the real deal).

  16. Rachel

For Dawn to even be compared to Brandy should be a compliment. I love this song and Dawn’s voice is on point!!

  17. Unknown

This is another hot song from Dawn.

  18. PYTEE

I honestly don’t see where these Brandy comparisons are comin from…and i’m a fan of both! I mean, they do have the same tone but that’s about it. But anywho, I really love this song. Dawn’s voice is so fresh and the lyrics are deep.

  19. Desert Mornings

Love it, once again Dawn has delivered. I don’t hear the Brandy like everyone else but hey its a compliment if anything but at the same time no artist wants to keep being compared to another artist. In my eyes she has her own style and sound and I believe the album will do well, we hearts have her back. A Tale Tell Heart got over a million downloads in one month and went trending and this song went trending as well when released, that says a lot, we fans support her %100.

True Enough, Dawn is very talented. However, what are they waiting on to release her album?? Is it Bad Boy Records? Yeah thats the ticket!!! Bad Boy is a terrible record company. They have talented, talented, artists and groups. They get swept under the rug. So sad. She needs better promoting

  22. ricky williams

She sounds like the new Brandy!!!!

  23. The Hater

Better than I expected, but still destined to go nowhere.

  24. A

even if her style reminds Brandy….

    what does it matter??

Brandy’s style is great, so what’s the problem with two great singers like them?

They are better than most of today’s females, so Im all for Dawn’s first album

  25. Trevanne

I used to be a BIGGGGGGGGG Brandy fan, and anyone that disagrees with the comparison, OBVIOUSLY doesn’t really listen to Brandy. That song sounds like it was made for Brandy & Dawn sounds like Brandy on it for sure. Even with the chord changes…and harmonies…and riffs….Brandy. Which isn’t some God awful thing, but I feel that if Dawn wants to set herself apart…she shouldn’t record songs that sound like they were made specifically for Brandy. I like Dawn & I wish her nothing but the BEST!

  26. mya browne

I love Dawn, always have. When I first heard it I thought it was Brandy singing it. I love them both, but it does sound like Brandy. No sideways comments please, just saying how I feel! Thank you

  27. Shadeed Rice

For all of those who don’t know “SMFU (Save Me From U)” is going to be the the 1st ‘single’ released from “GoldenHeart”.
The critical response to this song has been fairly positive from fans. I believe that this song will be sucessful being as thoug, it’s right timing, around this time people aren’t looking for the bangers, only because the summer is over & it’s getting to cold for clubs to a nice ballad is good for the fall/winter time. ;-)
