NEWS ROUNDUP: 5-YEAR-OLD JHESSYE SHOCKLEY IS MISSING / JUDGE APPROVES BLACK FARMERS’ SETTLEMENT

October 29th, 2011

It’s been nearly three weeks since 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing in Glendale, Arizona, by her mother, Jerice Hunter, who said she left the kindergartner with Jhessye’s older siblings while she ran an errand. Authorities have received numerous tips regarding the missing child from as far away as Ohio, but continue to “[look] for that break and it just hasn’t come yet”.

Hunter reportedly served three and a half years in a California prison for abusing her other children and was released in May 2010. Family members claim Jhessye may have also been abused. Cousin Mahogany Hightower said that the last time she saw Jhessye at a family barbecue in April, the little girl “cried really bad, telling us she wanted us to take her home. She wanted to go home now. We told her you can’t come home with us now, but you will later. She goes, ‘I can’t go later. I’ve got to go now.’” Hunter, who is eight months pregnant, denied those claims as well as any involvement in Jhessye’s disappearance.

“It is very unfair to ask me that,” she said, her voice rising. “Do I look like I hurt my daughter? Do I look like I hurt my daughter? Do I look like I hurt my daughter?”

Family members have stressed to police that they want them to look at everyone, including Hunter. A cash reward is offered for information regarding Jhessye’s disappearance, and anyone with information is urged to call the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-HELP (4357), the FBI, 911 or any police agency.

JUDGE APPROVES BLACK FARMERS’ SETTLEMENT

On Friday (Oct. 28), U.S. District judge Paul Friedman awarded a $1.25 billion settlement to thousands of black farmers who suffered racial discrimination and were denied loans and assistance from the Department of Agriculture.

Friedman said that while “historical discrimination cannot be undone” the settlement would “provide relief to an awful lot of people for the broken promise to those African-American farmers and their descendants”. President Barack Obama called the court’s decision “an important step forward in addressing an unfortunate chapter in USDA’s civil rights history”:

The U.S. District Court’s approval of the settlement between the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and plaintiffs in the Pigford II class action lawsuit is another important step forward in addressing an unfortunate chapter in USDA’s civil rights history. This agreement will provide overdue relief and justice to African American farmers, and bring us closer to the ideals of freedom and equality that this country was founded on. I especially want to recognize the efforts of Secretary Vilsack and Attorney General Holder, without whom this settlement would not have been reached.

So sad! And for real how old were those siblings?

I highly doubt these farmers are going to get a lot of that money after paying all those curt and lawyer fees and then splitting it up.

It’s about time the government gives what is owed to African American farmers that worked much harder than anyone and got far less. Families suffered, but now, hopefully, this is a tiny step in the right direction as far as reparations are concerned.

May God continue to bless in His time.

That lil girl is so pretty! Her gma is the reason her mom went to jail. The gma stepped up and reported the abuse and I applaud her for that!

Smh this is sad, but the little girl has been missing too long for her to still be alive. I first heard about this story on The View, they spoke about the spectacle over Casey Anthony, but the media never makes an issue over missing black kids. Very tragic

People on FB have changed their profile pics to her missing photo and circulating the picture.

Sherri Shepard from THE VIEW highlighted my tweet request to highlight the case I sent to her about the missing girl last week on the show. Thank you Sherri

I don’t care what you look like. If you abused your daughter, You abused your daughter. Killers most times don’t “look like killers”

That poor child, what do you do when a child cries out like that? She cried out and no one came to her rescue. Wish someone would have tried to get her to spend the night that night or something if she went on like that and the child may have told it all at the sleep over. I hate hearing about child abuse. I think about the child being helpless while someone is being hateful to them while no one is looking and the fear and trapped feeling the child must have. Sad. I hope she is found alive, but never know. It needs to get far more attention than it is getting. Black media/mags is going to have to step its game up with black missing kids and black people, period. Need to be on black programming just like these white kids, we have to do it ourselves just as grand.

Child abuse come in so many forms… It’s especially hard when it’s your family. The funny thing I see with people, it’s easier to call ACS when there is NO abuse and one is just upset for some reason..But when it’s real, no one calls…

….So this baby has been missing for three weeks and this is the second time I’ve seen this story.
Anyway I don’t know what is going on with these mothers these days, on top of that there are friends and family that know the parents are unfit and do nothing! Then when the children come up “missing” everyone wants to act surprised. My sister has a verbally and sometimes physically abusive boyfriend…and GUESS where her kids are? Not with her, they are with our parents. My point is we must stop this before it gets too late. The blood would be on our hands if we see things going on and not do anything about it.

Thank you so much for posting this story. I live in Phoenix so I’ve heard a lot about this but it hasn’t received the national attention that it deserves.

This mother had already been to prison in Cali for abusing her kids. I feel so bad that no one stepped in to help this little girl.

The mother gave birth this past week and CPS has taken the newborn, thank God!!
