NEWS: CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEER FRED SHUTTLESWORTH DIES AT 89

Civil Rights Leader, Icon and pioneer Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth passed away in Birmingham, Alabama Wednesday afternoon (October 5). He was 89.

Shuttlesworth worked alongside Rev. Martin Luther King in the 1950s and 60s with the SCLC organization and was arrested numerous times for his non-violent Civil Rights protests in the South. As the pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church, he survived two bombings, as well as a bombing at his home which almost killed him. He was also badly beaten by KKK members in 1957, while attempting to enroll his children in an all-white school.

Mr. Shuttlesworth received the Presidential Citizen’s Medal in 2001 from President Clinton for his leadership and also met with then Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2007 to commemorate the 1965 ‘Bloody Sunday’ Voting Rights march in Selma, Alabama. After a stroke in 2008, Shuttlesworth moved from Ohio back to Birmingham.

Rest in Peace to this true Civil Rights Icon and leader.

TV BIT: SAMUEL L. JACKSON SPEAKS NEW BROADWAY ROLE & PAST DRUG USE ON LETTERMAN

Samuel L. Jackson stopped by the David Letterman Show to talk about his new role as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King in the upcoming musical play, The Mountaintop. During his little chit chat session with the television show, the 62 year-old award winning actor shared a bit about how he prepared for the new role; he also spoke about his past addiction to crack cocaine – nearly that was nearly 21 years ago.

On what it’s like to be on crack:
It’s sort of maddening. You’re sitting there, kind of rushing and the world is kind of going by in a blur. And you take that hit and you kind of feel like, ‘Well if I hit it again, then I’ll get a little higher.’ You put some more in there and you light the pipe again. You keep doing it and just doesn’t happen. Then you end up going to buy some more, hoping that you’re going to get as blind as you got the first time. Continue

‘ROUND THE WAY: BISHOP EDDIE LONG WANTS SOME OF THE SETTLEMENT MONEY BACK + MORE LAWSUITS

I guess Bishop Eddie Long can’t catch a break! It has been over a year since the whole scandel involving himself and 5 of his accusers. Now that the millions of dollars have been settled in the designated pockets, Mr. Long is now demanding a partial refund from 3 of his accusers after discovering their breach in contract:

The letter, sent this week by the Atlanta law firm Drew Eckl & Farnham, alleges that Jamal Parris, Spencer LeGrande and Centino Kemp violated terms of a confidentiality agreement outlined in the settlement with Long and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. The firm is seeking at least $900,000 already paid the three accusers, according to people involved in the settlement but not authorized to speak publicly. That figure is a portion of the total settlement with the three men. [Source]

The letter apparently outlines Long’s “demand for arbitration”, though no legal documents were filed. Atlanta litigator Hayden Pace says, “The letter could simply be a threat. No one’s going to turn over the money just simply because you’ve asked for it. You’re going to have to earn it back by establishing your right to it in the courts.” (oop…) Continue
