This video has been circulating the web since last week and features an upcoming rapper, DPhil Spanglish wearing lipstick and woman’s leggings calling it the “XY MOVEMENT”. While speaking to his local news channel, he went into detail about the “movement” and recently tweeted similar sentiments:

Recently, this topic has been coming up a lot in hip-hop. Rapper Lil Wayne hit the MTV stage a couple months back wearing women’s leggings and causing an internet firestorm. Kanye West is currently on tour wearing what looks to be a leather skirt or kilt, he also wore a woman’s blouse during Coachella this past Summer.
Back in the late 60s and early 70s rocker David Bowie pushed boundaries with his stage persona Ziggy Stardust – doing similar things like wearing women’s makeup and clothing. He also proclaimed to have started the “Bisexual Chic” trend in the late 70s. Many other artists like the late great Michael Jackson to the talented Prince have also donned women’s clothing items. However, this boundary certainly hasn’t been crossed much in hip-hop/rap, especially in the mainstream realm.

I think your missing the whole point. He’s tryign to say the lines between gay and straight aren’t as stark as people may think by, being a STRAIGHT guy who wears lipstick, that’s the key point. Since we’re in the era of homo thug(masculine) and men that are gay(feminine). I can see that we have 2 types of gay men and the in between(DL men). Any man wearing something that is feminine(liptick, nail polish(color), tight women clothes) is questionable. I know that in the past decades(80″s) men of other cultures were cross dressing. However, a lot of the same men were gay back then but nobody knew it or they were bisexual.

I think it’s nothing new (glam rock) but it is interesting considering the industry genre he is in (rap/hip-hop). Obviously, he is not gay or he would have said so and clearly he has a girlfriend that supports him in that, so he really has nothing else to hide. I do think there is a double standard where women can assert these kind of masculine characters and play with their sexuality more than a man (especially black) could. Case in point, Kanye West wore a sort of “skirt” attire from Givenchy’s men collection recently and got a lot of flak for it. I personally saw nothing particularly feminine about it but more cultural; though that can be completely subjective.
I saw a something similar on a another blog and one commenter was like, “I feel sorry for this generation.” What kind of mentality is that? You feel sorry for progress, equality, and most important: absolute freedom? That’s almost like applying the same response when women could vote, when blacks were freed and could marry, etc. There was probably someone who said the same thing, “I feel sorry for this generation.” Well, I’m sorry you’re so ignorant. I don’t mind freedom of expression in terms of clothing, hairstyling, make-up, etc. But, if he really proclaims himself as a “straight” man, this type of expression will draw him attention that he doesn’t want. He may not see it as being gay, but other gay men might and it may lead down a path that he’s not trying to go. So for the sake of caution, I would refrain from those things.

There is the concept of what a "real man" is which is relative. The energy of masculinity and the assignment to the male sex. The common American Christian ideal of masculinity doesn't equal male or man for everyone. Nor should it have to be that way because mere humans have assigned these "isms" to the sexual assignment "male" and American Society has branded the burden of bearing the banner of this sexual ideal to those who are BLACK and male. Of course that is why many of our boys who grow up needing fathers who are receptive turn into stone, and break under the pressure becoming both emotionally and spiritually infertile. We grow up trying to epitomize someone else's idea of a man, what is male, and what is masculine when have they ever wanted us to be anything else but the big black virile buck breeding "golems"…men fashioned from flesh but without the human range of emotions and ability to give spiritual life to another. And if they possess these…they are shunned. This is how an alien idea of what Black men SHOULD be becomes another problem, another shackle on our minds…when its actually our responsibility to define ourselves. If we are the Universe there IS no limit to what we are….or what we can be!
