FASHION: FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA ACCUSED OF WEARING A DESIGNER KNOCKOFF, BUT DID SHE?

First Lady Michelle Obama is well known, among other things, for her fashionably forward sense of style. She has a knack for being able to mix high end design, with low end practicality. But at the White House’s official Halloween festivities, Mrs. O’s ability to be stylish on a budget might have gotten her mixed up in a little case of ‘did she, or didn’t she’ wear a designer knockoff.

The First Lady donned an orange and black striped dress, perfect for the holiday, paired with black tights, black knee high boots, and a black coat.

On first glance, the dress appears to be from the Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2011 collection. It has the same black, gold, and orange color scheme, and the same diagonal stripes.

Look a little closer though, and you’ll notice a few details on Mrs. O’s dress are off. The orange on her dress is brighter, the width of the gold stripes on the DvF dress vary in size, whereas the gold stripes on her dress are all the same. And Mrs. Obama’s dress has a high circle neckline, but the DvF dress has a boat neckline.

It appears the First Lady is in fact wearing a ‘designer inspired’ dress from online retailer ASOS. You can see the dress in question pictured to the right, and it’s an exact copy of Mrs. Obama’s dress. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Mrs. O was wearing the ASOS dress, as she’s worn the brand on several different occasions. With their reasonable prices, it’s easy to see why she’s a fan.

Her ‘Midi Body-Conscious Dress in Metallic Stripe’ is available from ASOS for $72, versus the DvF dress’ pricetag of $498 at Neiman Marcus.

Diane von Furstenberg has called out Mrs. Obama in the past for wearing a dress from a British designer (Alexander McQueen) to a state dinner. Wonder what the designer has to say about the First Lady wearing a knockoff of one of her designs that was purchased from a British retailer?

Do you think Mrs. Obama’s dress is a knockoff? And if it is, does it even really matter?

I think people need to get a grib. Go after the designer who knocked it off. Ain’t nobody got time to be doing research on everything they buy just to make sure it doesn’t match some famous designer. After looking at the two, if I was Michelle I would have went with the knock off anyway just because of the fit…much better fit!

If she was out spending crazy money on clothes then the public would have an issue with her spending. They would complain about her not setting an example for American’s who need to budget in a recession.

    Can’t please everyone!

  2. BUSI

i agree this designers r designing similar things theses days and she wudnt wear a knock-off she the 1st lady and she takes pride in that not 4getting to mention she is one of the photographed women n da world dahh! she luks good get ova it!

  3. Forwhatitsworth

I love asos, they have really nice stuff.

    • Daliah

I like that dress sooo much! I have never heard of ASOS so now imma google it!

I don’t blame anyone who refuses to pay $400 for a dress when u can get one just as cute for cheaper! The First LAdy is SMART!

    • Leeshalu

I love ASOS too. I’ve purchased a number of good quality, cute clothing on their site for reasonable prices. I just hope their pricing doesn’t go up drastically b/c of the publicity it’s gained from this “news” :/

  4. T

And so what if she did!!! I like the knockout better anyway, with the wider stripes.

  5. Anon

I like everything about the knock-off better! Esp the damn price!

  6. voo

WHO THE HELL CARES!! This should never have been posted in the first place. She’s a successful black women who not only is wealthy smart , beautiful and commendable, takes care of her husband and family and so happens to be the first African american first lady of the United States of America. There’s nothing negative the media can throw at her that is factual or can hurt her. It’s so pathetic they have to bring up ridicules issues like this. I don’t give a crap if she wears designer clothes or not of if she wants to wear clothes that cost couple hundred, good for her, more power to her. It’s none of my damn business! If I had the money I would too!

I like this blog stop posting crap that isn’t worth while or doesn’t make any sense. I know concreteloop didn’t start these accusation about the first lady but it’s really not worth posting. Its just drawing attention to the idiots that did.

exactly, they better try this story with Keri Hilson or Ciara or somebody, cause they ain’t messin with the First Lady, her money is so long theres no question that if she so choose, she could buy Diane’s whole damn collection, at $498 I COULD EVEN BUY the damn dress, so it’s no question that Michelle can……

  7. Itiswhatitis

WHO GIVES A FUCK!!! Excuse my language but i feel strong about this. This show where people minds are really at. There are more important things going on and needto be discused then worry about if somebody wearing high end clothes to low end clothes. And if she is wearing a less expensive brand…she still gonna have insperation amongst people who realize just cause you may got it going on, you dont have to spend your money reckless.

  8. Brandon Tha Great

    Why does it matter!

  9. Candi_Renee

I loooove that dress on the model. You definately must have a certain body type for the dress to fit proper.

  10. kay

smh i rather the $72 dress better

  11. Cali

I love shopping at ASOS (As Seen On Stars).

So what! Who cares! ASOS ALWAYS ROCK. The designs, the prices, the limitless selections etc.

  12. dang12

that post is stupid. you really gonna go into details of the difference between the stripes? bigger or brighter..sounds ridiculous to me. And who cares? Mrs. Obama looks great that’s all that matters. I love concreteloop, but you need to filter the news. This one was a waste of time.

  13. selectivewords

I like the knock off better anyway. I purchase dresses from ASOS all the time. Nice quality clothing at a cheap price. And they have great sales too!

  14. tertra114

why is this even a factor? are people trying to speculate that she can’t afford the real thing? LOL don’t make me laugh, this chick could buy…….scratch that, they would simply GIVE HER, whatever she wanted if she walked into any high end fashion store, there is not a designer on this planet that this women couldn’t buy out, so im sure she CHOOSE to wear this

  15. Kyla

The ASOS dress looks so much better. I’ve browsed ASOS quite a few times but I’ve always been afraid to actually purchase something .. maybe I’ll just go ahead and make a purchase.
And I don’t think anyone’s thinking Lady O can’t afford the real thing .. maybe she didn’t even know it was a knock off.

    • BK Girl

Me too! I agree… guess I will finally purchase those items I’ve had on hold now. LOL. Now watch everybody run to the site. Geesh…ugghhh

  16. Anon

The one from ASOS looks better, but this issue is dumb as sh*t.

  17. sck

I don’t think it matters. This is another case of “damned if you, damned if you don’t”. People have complained in the past of the Obama’s spending a lot money because of the fact that we’re in a recession. The First Lady then decides to be a bit more budget conscious so she buys this dress and people are still upset? People are just never satisfied.

  18. '-'

People should be happy. They always talk about how she is paying too much for fashion. So what if she bought something cheaper. Either way people have something to say. Too much or too little lol

  19. gg boo

Wow…trying to find anything as we come up on political season. I don’t mind CL posting this so we can at least be aware of the kind of lows that some will stoop to to try to discredit this beautiful woman.

  20. In$able^^

This propaganda from the First Lady’s team to make her appear price conscious. The ‘ever-woman’ that wears knock-offs. I love her but this is complete malarkey!

  21. Grizo

seriously…what is wrong with someone wearin a $72 dress? am glad she knows money doesnt grow on trees.#she was raised well

  22. yaya

WHO CARES? Do you think Mrs. Obama has time to study fashion? Or does she have time to sit there and figure out whether or not she’s wearing a knock-off dress?
She has WAAAAY more important things in society to attend to other than fashion. Not to demean the industry, but I’ve been seeing this all over blogs, and this “issue” is minuscule and not worth blogging about.

jeesh, what’s wrong with you people. It’s just CLOTHES. Get a grip. *rolls eyes*

  23. caramelapple

She has worn items from ASOS before, so how it is that this would be different? She just liked the dress and purchased it, ASOS has a knack for expensive knock offs so that should be expected. They copy Victoria Beckham all the time. No big deal. Guess she is trying to say cute dress but I dont feel like paying close to $500 for it boo.

  24. keyia

    I shop at ASOS…AND…CARRY ON!

  25. lemaracqt7

Can’t win for losing, if she wears a dress worth $500 they complain about it being too expensive while the economy is so bad and blah blah. If she is trying to be more “reasonable” then she wearing knock off’s. Whatever I love her fashion for her age. I think she is one of the most stylish first lady’s we have had. It doesn’t matter, get off her NUTS!!!

  26. Max

    I LIKE THE KNOCKOFF BETTER.

  27. aries_BLU

Funny how no one seemed to bat an eyelid when Jackie Kennedy or Nancy Reagan chose to wear clothing made exclusively by FRENCH designers. I wonder why?

    • voo

Thank you!! I was thinking the same thing. Its just prejudice. Those ladies are actually praised for there fashion sense. Women were trying to dress like them. It’s hard for white people to admire or praise a black women or to see her on top. That’s why the media try’s so hard to bring black women down. There not going to bring Michelle Obama down that’s for sure, I there not going to bring me down either.

  28. LoveBomb

I am sure Mrs. O had no idea. She doesn’t have to time to worry whether an outfit is a knock-off or not.

  29. Confucius08

lol…I tell you what. Either way, that dress is sold out..lol.

I am sure Michelle didn’t go out “knocking anything off.” People will complain either way, either spend over $500 on a dress or its a “knock off.” The Obamas can’t seem to win.

  30. Eboni!

Are we scolding her for being price conscience? lol In this economy…hell no! Go First Lady! Respect!

  31. starr

I mean really, at the end of the day who really cares? Does this really make or break Mrs.Obama or any of us for that matter. Let’s stick to the important issues at hand. Such as breast cancer andthe unemployment rate!

  32. Mary O

Knock off or not, both dresses may be on-trend….but both dresses are ugly (added by Mobile using Mippin)

  33. tony

On trend or not, neither dress is all that flattering (added by Mobile using Mippin)

  34. KBK

Funny that I am seeing this because just this morning I was wtching a documentary about First Lady Jackie Kennedy and how although she loved the fashion over in Paris, being the First Lady; she can only wear clothing made from the United States. That maybe why her dress is a “knock off”. Calm down, people! There is nothing new under the sun. Maybe we are just harder on our own.

  35. Jason

Both dresses look a steaming hot christmas wrapping paper MESS, so I dont see what the big deal is……I like Michelle, but I have always hated the way she dresses…on to bigger news

  36. Suchalady

I love the ASOS version better. I was just looking at it the other day. Michelle looks great!

  37. lmao

LMAO. I’m mad this is news. Who cares though? Michelle is a typical black woman though, love it….why pay so much when you can get a similar one for a much cheaper price?
Plus she probably didn’t even know it was a “knockoff”
There are far more things people should be focusing on.

  38. MRB

Just my opinion I like the Diane von Furstenberg dress better because its a more classier cut! That neck line is would be more flattering for a woman of her age!!!! However I think the ASOS is nice for the under 25 year old woman plus I dont blame her for not spending 400 for a dress that someone would make a big issue about! At the end of the day she always shows a good example! To make the story short! WHO THE HELL CARES??? SHE WEARS WHAT SHE WANTS!!! SMH

  39. Jazmine

Yeah, I’m sure that Asos was “inspired” by the DVF version. They’re almost identical. However, this is the name of the game in any arena. You can get “designer” cereal or generic cereal, you can get a Bentley or a Chrysler 300, You can but Louboutin’s or shop at Payless for a cheap knockoff. Bottom line is that being “inspired” by other styles happens a lot, especially in fashion. What Michelle did is totally different from the way Beyonce handles her “inspiration”. Beyonce sees your shyt and just makes it herself. I’m quite sure that Michelle didn’t see the DVF version and make ASOS create it. LOL She probably didn’t even know about the DVF dress. I’m sure she has a stylist that picks most of her clothes anyway and although I like both versions I think the $72 ASOS dress is a better buy. For a long time I thought ASOS was my little secret. Now it’s gaining even more popularity especially with Mrs. Obama wearing their clothes.

    • Doe

I shop ASOS too because they make really nice clothing for curvy girls… I guess the big secret is out now and I’ll be seeing my clothing on other chicks around town! GO FIRST LADY for rocking what the hell ever she wants to wear and GO ASOS for the increase in sales! I know their owners are elated!

  40. YES I Did

Thank God she bought the Asos dress, she atleast saved some of our taxmoney

  41. shawna

she’s showing the normal people how to look goood wearing and leaving under the budget. i’m sure the designers are hating on her though, oh well!!! people are alwasys going to say something regardless what, i remember they were talking how she was wearing an expensive over the top dress when the economy is down but now she’s wearing something cheap and they still talking. give me a break people and sit down, just worried about you. my goodness.
